There was a link to this advert or a similar one on the Dried Plum the other day. In it Jet2 said they were looking for staff to help with their routes from their nine UK bases in 2018. Jet2 already has nine UK bases so that would suggest no new base for next year.

Airlines often have recruiting initiatives in towns and cities where they have no presence and never will, but with this it might read that the location (Bournemouth) is the site of the job rather than the site of the interviews.

BOH would be interesting and might represent a change of plan for Jet2 in terms of their next base.

We'll have to wait to see if BOH, or perhaps somewhere else, becomes the tenth Jet2 base in the UK in the near future.

BOH's recent performance

BOH is an interesting airport, situated on the South Coast although the Bournemouth-Poole conurbation is in the government region of the South West, a huge area stretching from Gloucestershire in the north, Wiltshire to the east, Dorset to the south-east, Cornwall/Isles of Scilly to the south-west with the counties of Bristol, Somerset and Devon also included.

Its nearest airport is Southampton which is not in the government's South West region.

BOH's catchment contains a considerable number of older, well-off people, hence the airport's traffic is largely leisure-based with its top ten routes in 2016 falling into that category. SOU, on the other hand, enjoys a more balanced route network with perhaps the emphasis tending towards business routes. BOH's runway at 2,271 metres in length is noticeably longer than SOU's 1,723 metres, so perhaps the often larger aircraft used on leisure routes accounts for BOH's predominance in this sector. Overall SOU at just over 2 mppa handles nearly three times the number of BOH.

The next closest airport to BOH is Exeter which is in the government South West region and is much closer to BOH in terms of passenger numbers, albeit in the past couple of years EXT has grown at a greater and more consistent rate.

BOH relies on Ryanair and TUI (Thomson) - some of whose routes are seasonal - with easyJet Switzerland operating a winter Geneva route.

A look at the annual passenger numbers of the past ten years shows a 43% decrease between 2007 and 2011 as the recession took a tight grip. Since then recovery has been patchy, partly due to Flybe opening a base and then closing it down within a year.

These are BOH's annual passenger numbers for the past decade:

2007 1.083 million up 12.8% on 2006
2008 1.078 million down 0.4%
2009 0.868 million down 19.5%
2010 0.750 million down 13.6%
2011 0.612 million down 18.4%
2012 0.690 million up 12.6%
2013 0.659 million down 4.3%
2014 0.661 million up 0.3%
2015 0.705 million up 6.7%
2016 0.666 million down 5.5%

Latest 12-monthly figure was 0.691 million for the period to May 2017.

Interestingly I have friends who live very close to LCY who sometimes choose to fly from Bournemouth, saying how easy it is to use, plus they have found a local farm house where they can park car very cheaply and the owners pick them up on the return. She leaves to pick them up upon their return when plane flies overhead the farm. : - )

In many people's eyes BOH is under-used. It's primarily a holiday airport.

Nearby Southampton Airport is mainly a business airport, with its onsite railway station very useful. Because of its extremely short runway SOU has few flights by 150-190 seat aircraft so BOH tends to get those.

In 2007 and 2008 BOH handled more passengers annually than another relatively nearby airport, EXT, but currently EXT is nearly 200,000 a year ahead of BOH.

The Bournemouth-Poole conurbation although situated on the South Coast is actually part of the government region of the South West and is the second largest conurbation in that huge region. So there is a good-sized population locally which contains a high number of mainly older, well-off people with the propensity to fly for leisure. Against that BOH has no readily accessible catchment outside this main core.

That's a fair way to travel considering the airports they have closer but i guess it what they prefer! And a lot of the time the smaller and quieter airports can be a lot better experience wise than the big heaving busier airports.

There is certainly a lot to be said for the very quiet airports. Snag is that they are quiet because they don't have many routes so choice is limited.

My brother-in-law and his wife live on Dartmoor and usually have to travel to Bristol Airport for holiday trips but they are always delighted if they can use Exeter Airport (which they are doing in December) because, not only is it much closer to their home, but it's a much pleasanter passenger experience as there are so few people in the terminal. I guess the same applies with BOH.

CAA Stats September 2017

78,067 used the airport in the month, up 8.5% on September 2016. Atms were up 6.2%. Rolling 12-month total was 695,770, up 2.3% on a year ago.

After its record years of 2007 and 2008 with 1.083 mppa and 1.078 mppa respectively, the airport slumped to 614,000 by 2011, mainly because of the recession.

Since then it has become stuck in the range 670,000-707,000 with some years up and some years down.

It's been reported elsewhere that MAG are looking to sell. Apparently to the owner of EXT and NWI so if that happens you have to wonder if Ryanair will stay committed to the airport.

I saw that but it's just speculation at present, isn't it?

I have visited many airports in the UK but I've never been to Bournemouth....I remember when I started as a lad in my first job as a travel agent Dan Air used to fly to Jersey from there....i think using a 748.

I'm sure you are right. Dan Air certainly used 748s from BRS and CWL to the Channel Islands in the 1980s.

Yes you are right, my wife and I were going to use it in 1973 but both flights were fully booked(and that was midweek).

They bought it in 2001 along with EMA. Over the last 10 years they have invested £45 million in the terminal and other upgrades.

I've unfortunately never been there, but id like to, been to all other SW airports, except Lands End. Do you think BOH is in better shape now than it was pre 2001 or about the same? I always think it's a shame when some of these long standing commercial airports are having a seemingly tough time.
