[textarea]£12m expansion plan for Liverpool John Lennon Airport

LIVERPOOL John Lennon Airport (JLA) last night unveiled ambitious £12m expansion plans.

Details of the development were released as it emerged low-cost carrier Easyjet may bring more routes to Merseyside.

JLA owner Peel Airports wants to build bigger and better security facilities and almost double JLA’s retail space.

The project will see new stair and escalator access for check-in passengers at the eastern end of the terminal leading to an improved security suite built on the third-floor in existing hangar space.

Hangar One is currently occupied by engineers employed on behalf of Easyjet. But as the space will soon be surplus to requirements a new floor will be built into the hangar roof space housing the security facilities.

Easyjet has confirmed it will consider new routes for JLA after announcing it was slashing services at two other UK airports. The budget airline announced last week it was closing its East Midlands Airport base and cutting 20% of its capacity at home base Luton.

The company is citing a number of factors in its decision including “stagnant conditions” at East Midlands, steep rises in landing charges at Luton and the government’s air passenger duty (APD) tax.

Despite APD being an issue for all UK airports Easyjet said moving routes to JLA to add to the current 23 was a possibility.

A spokeswoman told the Daily Post: “That (moving routes to Liverpool) is something that would be considered.

“There is a consultation process now going on and if we move aircraft then we will need to decide where we move them to.

“Liverpool is a very different story to East Midlands and has seen significant growth.”

JLA spokesman Robin Tudor welcomed the possibility of extra routes in and out of Liverpool and said the proposed security improvements were essential to eliminate passenger bottlenecks at peak times in the day.

He said: “There are pinch points in the early morning as jets try to get away – so we need more space.”

Liverpool Airport terminal upgrade approved

Liverpool Airport has secured planning approval for the extension of the existing terminal. It will relocate an existing search area into one of the adjoining hangers to create more space in the terminal.

The works will see the creation of a new link from the check-in desks to the new search facility as well as the redevelopment of level three of the terminal, to transform it from a landside retail facility to an airside facility. The work is due to start on site immediately, with a view to being completed by Summer 2010.

I've been reading else where that the airport is struggling to get it's new CAT III system up and running. Some people on another forum have been suggesting that the CAA keep "moving the goal posts" as they put it. Does anybody know any more about this?

Has this kind of infrastructure deal ever been done before between council and private ownership?

I can't quote any local authority statistics but several years ago the Wales Assembly Government agreed to make a loan of £5 million to the then private owners of Cardiff Airport on the basis that the owners put in a specified amount themselves. The purpose was to upgrade airport facilities. In the event the owners failed to provide their own cash so the offer from the WAG lapsed.

The Liverpool initiative (if it goes through) is reportedly loan investment support to underpin major investment at the airport although precise details of the deal are not revealed.

All local authorities seem to be cash strapped and this won't improve in the foreseeable future, therefore opportunities might be limited and certainly subject to intense criticism by many local tax payers who see budgets reducing in all manner of council departments.

That announcement couldn't have come at a better time for the airport after last nights diversions due to fog. Hopefully some positive spin out of a bad situation for the airport marketing team!

It probably seems an unimportant thing but the WCs have been gradualy renovated around the airport. They are now very modern looking and high tech facilities. It obviously makes going to visit the loo a more pleasant experience it also shows Liverpool Airport is improving the passenger experience.

Daja-vu - I thought I was reading the Leeds "Infrastructure, Construction & Developments" thread.

As small as it is it is still relevent especially from a passengers perspective. There's nothing worse than broken, dirty smelly public conveniences.

Last weekend, I saw some heavy engineering work at Frodsham Junction working on the Halton Curve railway line. From December 2018, direct trains from Chester, and later North Wales will use this small but very important piece of track which has not been in full use since the 1970s. It will be an major improvement for passengers from Chester and North Wales to access Liverpool Airport, as all trains will call at Liverpool South Parkway, which has an airport link from it.

View of Liverpool South Parkway Station which provides a bus link to the terminal building. Several train operators offer connections from here to various destinations as far away as Norwich plus the city centre.

XLR executive jet centres are advertising for staff for a new base at Liverpool. It is understood the new facility will be near the general aviation facility at the east side of the airport. A terminal, apron and hanger are proposed.

XLR executive jets are owned by The Rigby Group, who own Exeter, Bournemouth, Coventry and Norwich Airports. XLR have operations at Exeter and Coventry they also recently bought Marshall's Aviation at Birmingham. Good to see them investing in Liverpool.

The Halton Curve reopening seems to going well, more engineering on the line is due this month, with rail services due from the end of 2018. This line will allow passengers from North Wales and Chester to gain a new direct route to Liverpool South Parkway which offers frequent bus connections to the terminal building.

On rail subjects Merseytravel long term strategy is to build a rail connection to Liverpool John Lennon, some intial study work is underway at present.

I'm not familiar with the area, will this be from the same line as the Parkway?

Hi
We are talking a long time off, but one plan is from Hunts Cross from where the Northern Line of Merseyrail ends to extend to airport , other options is a branch from the mainline between Liverpool and Runcorn.
