The airport's projection for double digit growth at the end of the calendar year of 2018 would see it with a minimum throughput of 1.610 million passengers by the year end.

The latest CAA stats take us to the end of June when the airport's rolling 12-month total was 1.507 million. Therefore to reach 1.6 mppa in 2018 there needs to be an additional 90,000 passengers in the last six months of the year compared with the same period in 2017. That's an average of 15,000 per month.

The CEO says that July saw a 12% increase in passenger numbers which equates to around 20,500 more than in July 2017. A similar percentage increase in August would see a touch under 22,000 additional passengers compared with the previous August, meaning that CWL would have handled around 204,000 passengers in the month. So far as I can determine, CWL’s best ever calendar month was August 2007 when 264,000 passengers used the airport.

With Qatar's passenger figures seemingly much improved in peak summer there must be a very good chance of the 'target' being reached.

Busy year sees Cardiff Airport hit 1 million passengers in August
The national airport for Wales is continuing to perform strongly, and is well on track to achieve double digit passenger growth at the end of this year, having already welcomed 1m passengers* just eight months into 2018.

Figures show that at this point last year, Cardiff Airport had welcomed just over 935,000 passengers, representing a 7% increase in 2018.

Additionally, the month of July 2018 alone saw double digit growth, having welcomed 12% more passengers over the busy peak summer month.

At just over halfway through the year, Cardiff Airport has already seen many exciting announcements and developments, including:

  • The launch of a brand new, direct daily service to the Middle East with 5* airline Qatar Airways. Creating more choice for customers from Wales and the South West travelling to global destinations via Doha
  • Cardiff Airport has unveiled its draft Masterplan - #CWL2040 - detailing our vision and ambitious plans for the next 20+ years. The draft document, which is currently open for public consultation can be viewed here
  • Announced as part of a joint venture with the Welsh Government, Cardiff Airport will take over the operation, management and maintenance of the St Athan airfield and business park in 2019
  • The completion of a £4 million investment into the improvement of the customer experience within the terminal, including additional seating in the Departure Lounge for passengers to relax before travelling, with stunning views of the runway; a new WH Smith and two new Costa Coffee branches; a new look Executive Lounge and a brand new Business Lounge, renamed the 51ׄׄ° Lounge
  • TUI announced the addition of an aircraft at its Cardiff base for summer 2019, which will add 100,000 extra seats and new flights to Dubrvonik (Croatia), Naples (Italy) and Hurghada (Egypt)
  • Flybe celebrated the third anniversary of its Cardiff base and the addition of another aircraft. The airline has seen a 130% increase in passengers at Cardiff and now offers flights to 17 destinations including Dublin, Cork, Belfast City and Jersey.
Deb Barber, CEO of Cardiff Airport, commented:

“At just over halfway through 2018, it’s promising to see such strong passenger figures. This summer, for example, is our busiest summer in a decade and we’re continuing to improve the experience for our passengers, with the launch of a new Meet & Greet parking service just recently.

“With strong monthly results such as July’s 12% increase and 8% passenger growth for the rolling 12 months, we are well on track to deliver the double digit growth projected at the beginning of the year.

“Our work continues to deliver a sustainable airport business which encompasses a diverse portfolio of products and services, but, more than anything, we are passionate about flying the flag for Wales and proudly acting as a key gateway to the UK for international visitors.”

Yes there is a good chance of the 1.6 million target being hit for the calender year which isn't too bad considering what 5 years ago the airport was at 1 million passengers? if i remember correctly?
With TUI adding an extra 100,000 seats and Thomas Cook an extra 10,000? for next year then 1.7 million should be easily reachable and if Flybe, Ryanair and Vueling add as well then 1.8 million could be possible as well.

This is a great achievement. The worst months of January to March and then the beast from the east with so many flight cancellations. The airport is doing well.

CAA Stats July 2018
The airport saw 192,026 passengers use the airport up 11.9% on 2017.
The rolling year was 1,528,248 up 7.5% on 2017.
Atms were 1784 up 4.3% with the rolling year at 16,925 up 0.1%.

Really good news, nice to see Amsterdam increasing, and Doha doing so well, it must have surprised a few of the people whose comments on other forums, who don't appear to want it to succeed.
