Probably because they have 2 other partners that they would need to clear it with first.
That.s what i was thinking as well.I'm not sure of the make up of the group that bought Flybe and to be honest i have have not made much effort to study it. working on the basis of whatever will be will be.
What i have picked up is Stobart are involved.An airline who seem keen to expand European point to point services with small aircraft.
Also AF and KLM with their own hubs to feed.
Ever since the sale was rumored all i read is Virgin but they are a company not even in control of their own destiny..Bigger fish control them.

Cyrus group own 40% Virgin and Stobart each own 30%. Virgin aren't the majority shareholders of Connect Airways Cyrus are and they are an investment group so will want a return.

Just to repeat a post I made a while back re Virgin Atlantic ownership.

Delta own 49%, AF/KLM31% and Virgin 20% meanwhile virgin hold 30% of Flybe so effectively Branson owns 6% of Flybe.
Therefore as 58terminus correctly points out there is more to it than just Virgin given Delta,AF and KLMs Skyteam tie up and I wonder just how important Stobart will be in the eventual form Connect takes as they could have a wider interest in Uk regional services than Virgin etc.

The Virgin brand is being used as its so well regonised in the UK and indeed worldwide so is an obvious thing to do but the actual power and decision making lies elsewhere mostly in the USA given Cirus and the Delta involvement.

Worth pointing out that many suspect Delta have been pulling the strings at Virgin for a number of years now. Delta would mostly likely use Flybe to help feed their TATL flights.

Good point about Stobart though. Best chance for BHX is Stobart keeping Flybe a UK wide regional airline rather than just a feeder airline for Virgin/Delta.

How about Stobart under the Virgin brand taking over the flights KLM operate from many uk airports (they put our national airline to shame}
to feed Amsterdam . Makes more sense than its all about feeding MAN.

Virgin may never operate long haul from BHX but there is a lot of business to business to be had from BHX and the Virgin brand is popular. Scaling back BHX to focus on a few MAN long haul will be suicide. That is a limiting market. MAN but is not a LHR when it comes to TATL choice, particularly two way Business to Business.

It will go down as one of the dumbest aviation decision ever to drop their main base.

Here is the European Commission ruling: http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-19-3790_en.htm

To address the competition concerns identified by the Commission with regard to the Birmingham - Amsterdam and Birmingham - Paris routes, Connect Airways offered a set of commitments.

Connect Airways committed to the release of five daily slot pairs at Amsterdam Schiphol airport and three daily slot pairs at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. Under the proposed commitments, these slots will be released to competing airlines that want to fly the Birmingham - Amsterdam and Birmingham - Paris routes.

The slot pairs in question are at CDG and AMS rather than at BHX but they will only need to be given up if a new airline wants to fly to BHX (ie they can't be used for another purpose).

I think there will likely be some reduction in frequency but the slots don't necessarily have to come from the existing frequencies at BHX they could come from somewhere else eg Southampton, Doncaster/ Sheffield etc.

The remedy more likely protects the number of seats on the routes as if the decided to reduce significantly to push prices up it could make them attractive to service from other carriers.

If FlyBe drop DSA-AMS then it only leaves BHD, everything else is dropped. (unless they come back next summer). I doubt that would be the case.

Between BHX, MAN, EDI and SOU they'll have enough slots that they can use to not make much of an impact.

This seems to have slipped under the radar... interview with the new Executive Vice-President of Virgin

https://www.anna.aero/2019/06/28/30...en-evp-of-commercial-virgin-atlantic-airways/

" the Flybe acquisition and the creation of the Connect Airways consortium will enable us to widen our footprint in the UK regions in a completely different way. "

"anna.aero: In connection with that, what plans do you have for an expanded domestic and European network through the new Connect Airways consortium of Flybe and Stobart Air?

JJ:
We don’t have EU approval yet, so until then it’s hard to do the planning, but we do see lots of growth potential both domestically in the UK and also Europe. But we can’t say what until we get those approvals!"

I wouldn't rule out Virgin long haul at BHX

I posted this on the TCX thread on Friday, today is sunday and the same applies to Virgin Atlantic.

Here is my wish list for the first 12 months of long haul at BHX starting March 2022

Based = 1 A330-200

Orlando = 2 weekly

New York JFK = 3 weekly

Cancun = 1 weekly

Obviously I know jack diddly squat but things may change at VS so we can but hope :unsure:

Now that is an interesting statement. Does this mean BHX at the centre or Connect treating MAN is its new main hub to suck some more long haul away from the south east. Bearing in mind runway 3 is a decade away, new capacity at LHR will dry up so MAN as the hub makes sense. Of course BHX would be the preference.

Ian's little teaser thrown in for good measure.

I do think in the long run they may try and turn MAN into another hub. A Skyteam version of Dublin maybe but if they take a leaf out of their owners book Delta BHX could be a good focus city for them targeting specific routes.
