I would be surprised if they were out of limits based on the wind just looking at the metars. They can usually handle greater crosswinds than that.

I was due to wind. He had a crosswind limit of 38knots, however on his first approach it was gusting over 40. He held for about 10 minutes and the gusts dropped to low 30's so he made a second attempt and landed without problem

Aha, was there an intermediate instant wind given?

Dash 8 G-PRPH(Jersey 740) pushed back for departure to Belfast around 2000.
Before taxi the captain reported a problem and had to shut down before being towed back on tyo stand
However the ground crew reparted smoke coming from the rear of the aircraft and once the fire trucks arrived the captain was told to make a controlled evacuation of passenger from front door onto the apron.
Heat source has been found and as I type the firemen are still working on the situation, but scorching has begun to appear on paintwork at rear.

The incident was closed at 2040. The cause was a starter motor fire in the rear of the aircraft which has now been disconnected.
The aircraft is being towed to Stand 19 and is be monitored overnight, until engineers arrive.

That doesn't sound good, especially if Scorch marks on rear end of aircraft. Must have been some bloody heat to cause that.
Was a full emergency incident declared by the airport?

Seems that for now, the LBA runway that points in the wrong direction, might be pointing in the right direction today! That wind out there is pretty fierce as I sit here listening to the tiles on the roof rattling. Landing on any runway, pointing in any direction, won't be much fun this afternoon.

Came in on LS186 yesterday tea time, it was choppy from a long way out. On the first attempt we were still 50ft up as we flew over the tunnel, didn't want a "Tristar" landing. I thought we would divert but got in on the second attempt although we blown all over the place, slammed all on and managed to turn down the North/South taxiway and reversed on to stand.
I was surprised to see the BA had got in.

You would have been even more surprised then to see a Wizz Air A320, diverted from DSA, so the wind must have been even worse down there and presumably even more of a cross wind on their runway that points in the right direction. Fortunately, the wind soon died down again and it was pretty calm by just after teatime.

Oddly it wasn't and there was much more of a crosswind at LBA around the time - so maybe it wasn't just the wind that cause them to go-around twice at DSA? Anyway, after two goes they came to LBA.

Perhaps it was wind shear then. Some airlines automatically divert if they experience wind shear or if they have made two approaches without being able to land.

Looks like chaos reigns in Krakow today due to heavy snow fall.

Ryanair = Boeing 737-800, EI-EMA
FR2332 LBA-KRK = Diverted to Katowice
FR2333
KRK - LBA = Flight Cancelled (Positioning KTW-LBA empty)

Jet2 =
Boeing 737-800, G-JZHD
LS295 LBA - KRK = Diverted to Katowice
LS296
KRK - LBA = Expected 21:00 (Passengers bussed KRK-KTW - Flight operating KTW-LBA)

No surprise there then. Jet2 bus the pax, wait for them, and get them home. Ryanair don't bother and come home without the pax, leaving them high and not so dry in Krakow.
If the Ryanair crew had already operated the LBA-DUB-LBA sectors, then to wait around in KTW could have put them out of hours and an enforced night stop with an aircraft out of place. Only a guess!

But he (unanswered) question has to be: What are Ryan doing to get their stranded passengers back to LBA. Until that is clear (and the answer is everything) then the comment by WH is extremely valid. Jet2, as usual, sorted it straight away..
