Re: Airlines no longer flying .

That's a confusing story Aviador from what I can gather but I'll be happy to explain as much as I can...

As far as I remember, back in 2006 the Iberworld Group which owned the airline as well as a vast amount of hotels around the world, decided to sell the airline brand of the group, whilst keeping the hotels and resorts. As a result the Iberworld airline has become "Orbest Orizonia" and is owned partly by a British holiday firm as well as various other equity firms and Spanish travel companies, but I'm pretty sure the British holiday company owns a controlling part of the company (Over 50% I believe).

Following the destructuring of the Iberworld brand, which doesn't technically operate anymore as everything became branded under one name, a new group was devised called "Orizonia Corporation" and was founded in 2006 on the back of the Iberworld brand which was subsequently split into three sectors. There are three sides to the new group:

a)Iberostar Hotels and Resorts - Staying as it is and partly owned by the new group
b)Grupo Receptor - Travel Agencies that were purchased
c)Grupo Emisor - Cruise Companies, Tour Operators and Airlines - where Iberworld currently operates under the brand "Orbest Orizonia"

To make things more complicated, there is an airline called "Orbest" which is a subsidary of "Orbest Orizonia" which is a single A330 operating charters mainly to South America I understand, and is painted in a different livery to all other aircraft.

All Iberworld aircraft have been repainted, and some aircraft were sold off as part of the renewal process.

So to summarise, the Iberworld airline quietly became no-more, but is operating under a new brand and as I understand is profitable and slowing expanding again.

Re: Airlines no longer flying .

I see Air Finland is to add to the list. (Do we actually have one? :dunno: )

Reported in our Dublin thread "Cosmo" went bust on Thursday.

Another one bites the dust...

Looks like Kingfisher Airlines of India has failed to restart services after cash flow problems.

It seems news is breaking from Armavia the former Russian state, that their flag-carrier Armavia Airlines has filed for bankruptcy within the past 24hours.

They had a very promising beginning, since their start of operations in 1996 carrying around 800,000 passengers in 2010 and had a fleet of 11 very different aircraft, such as; A319 (1),A320 (2+1Order),B735 (3),CRJ200LR (3) and had a B737 and B738 on order.

Many may remember the airline as they were the launch customer for the Sukhoi Superjet 100-95LR. In the end the company only ordered two of the aircraft, one of those orders was cancelled and they returned the other, then leased it back, on and off for about 3 months until the company's demise, citing reliability concerns following the Sukhoi accident where one flew into mountainous terrain in Indonesia on a test/delivery flight.

Wasn't a major airline, but any airline bankruptcy is sad..!!

Found these pictures in the forum gallery archives. It's hard to believe the airline is no longer after so many years.

For a couple of years LBA was linked to Larnaca Cyprus by charter flights operated by Cyprus Airways and Cypriana. This is Cyprus Airways' Airbus A310 5B - DAQ landing on runway 32 at LBA/EGNM. The photo was taken from the cricket ground behind the Old Ball public house, Horsforth

So sad.

My first ever flight was with Monarch back in the 1980's on a 1-11.

As I said elsewhere they were my first port of call when booking flights, every time I have travelled with them they have been great.

I really feel for all of the employees :(

I used Monarch only a couple of times. I flew with them to Palma from LBA and to Rhodes from MAN. I always had a lot of respect for Monarch since watching them bring a 757 into LBA before the runway extension in 1985. Huge crowds of spectators visited for the occasion. I'm sure I'm not the only one who can feel a lump in their throat today?

I can only add my thoughts to those already expressed by so many contributors on the various Monarch forums today.

The first B757 I ever saw was a Monarch aircraft in the winter of 84 (November - I think that was the year), when it was about to operate its first ever flight from Bristol (to Malaga). Quite a lot of people turned up to watch and not all aviation nuts either.

In the 1990s and early years of this century my wife and I flew between Bristol and Salzburg most summers and Monarch was the carrier (B 757 each time) in several years. Amongst other airlines we flew with on that route were Airworld (A320) and Aero Lloyd (A 321) both of which have long since disappeared. One year we used a British European Bae146 which airline Jersey European had become before changing its name again, this time to Flybe.

Unfortunately, airlines going to the wall has been a feature of the industry since the beginning and, sadly, Monarch won't be the last of a line that will continue on into the future.

Sadly i never flew with Monarch but my former employer used to work for them and still did up until yesterday, make up their flight kits for their dry goods. Toilet rolls, bin bags, tissues, tinned food, water and orange juice and other stuff that used to get packed into the aircraft carts and cages to go on the aircraft. They also and will still have used to store everything from their carts to plastic trays for them. As drivers we used to mainly deliver this stuff to Alpha Flight services in MAN, BHX, LTN, LGW, ABZ and then seasonally to STN, EDI, GLA, NCL, DUB, ORK, BFS and CWL. Occasionally though we used to have to collect the charity coins boxes for McMillan cancer from the aircrew parts and they were always lovely to me and all the drivers at BHX and MAN in particular and LGW though that was a rush job because it you were parked on double yellow lines! Sadly for my former employer and the people there Monarch was by far their biggest customer though they do some work for Jet2 at BHX. It is really sad to see them here is this thread and i will remember those days with fondness.:(

In light of the recent success of the Memories of Monarch thread in the Birmingham forum it got me reminiscing. I thought a similar thread would be good for other airports but decided this thread was probably the way to go so anybody from anywhere can add to it.

My first memory of Monarch Airlines was at LBA back in 1984 (possibly 1983) when the airline sent a Boeing 757 into Leeds prior to the airports runway extension opening. I don't remember why the aircraft visited, only that it brought in the crowds to see it. I have to admit it was a little nerve wrecking watching the aircraft on it's final approach into the airport on the then 1800 metre length runway. (there about)

In my plane spotting days as a teenager I took this photo when Monarch Airlines used to do a (yes just one) weekly flight to Parma. Happy days.
