I've seen a few comments on various forums about how the airport could possibly develop once the new extension is complete. One or two people out there say they don't think it is possible.

Here is a plan I've just thrown together combining the old terminal project and a new extension which would stretch across the front of the extension which is under construction. It would provide space for a larger immigration area. It would enable the baggage carousels to be lengthened with a large meet and greet area. On the opposite side of the extension there would be a new check-in area with a baggage make-up area behind. This plan if it were to be built would offer around 25% more capacity than the original new terminal proposal as it has an extra baggage belt in the arrival and additional check-in desks.

This is of course just a vision, not a proposal but it shows how the airport can still look to the future with a view to decommissioning the old terminal structure and moving to a new purpose build facility.

Jet2 have submitted to the airport drawings for a new PosiCharge area, to facilitate an increase in electric GSE. It is unclear where this will be. LBA has been lagging behind other bases wrt electric GSE, mostly due to a lack of charging infrastructure, so this is a "Posi"tive development.

Part of the electrical infrastructure is already in place next to the remote gates. They have also trialled a remote control pushback tug.

One of the long term plans is to have connections to ground power on stands in place of using GPU's. The issue will be digging up the ramp to lay cables etc

Ok so I've had a bit of a play around this afternoon. So we frequently hear "there
s no room to expand at LBA", so I've created this to give you an idea of what is possible within the airports current boundaries.

Future vision within the current boundary with room for well over 35-40 stands. Room for up to 6 widebody aircraft stands and still room for more if required. 2 aircraft piers with room for two additional piers, one to the west, and one to the east. Full parallel taxiway, and additional taxiways.

I admire your brave thinking but... Certainly not enough clearance behind those aircraft to manoeuvre/taxi others. Would never work if you want to retain CAT3. The Radar/DME/NDB/HRDF all have protection zones around them all gone in your vision. So it's fine if you only consider where to put stationary aircraft, but as soon as you want to move them it won't work!

I don't know the technicalities you're right but it is essentially the same as the airports beyond 2030 plan. Can you be more specific with the areas in question relating to each of the above mentioned problems?

Is there actually sufficient land at both ends and over the tunnel for a parallel taxiway full length
No. If you moved the glide path aerial to the other side of the runway then you could get an extension out to the 32 threshold (the ‘piano keys’), but any further would require massive earth works.

At the 14 end, unfortunately when the runway extension was built the councils cheaped out on the tunnel, which isn't long enough. Any taxiway joining up with Echo would be too close to the runway, so you’d need to extend the tunnel northward. You don’t actually need a full length taxiway at that end anyway, just another runway exit between Alpha and the tunnel which would allow the majority of traffic to vacate 32 without backtracking.

Nice image aviador, perhaps the piers extending out (esp the one nearer the runway) could be reduced in length by roughly 1/4th so aircraft parked dont interfere with the ILS?
Also a pier could extend further westerly into where the current lba terminal has been demolished in your image, remember a pier will be no where near the width of the current building so aircraft would park further away from the runway which currently atm is an ils issue again, this gives more parking space which makes up for the reduced pier lengths.

I think that there is sufficient land for a parallel taxi way over the A658 which may have to be lowered a foot or two. There could also be a problem as on the left hand the exit of the tunnel as there are some large electric control boxes which i understand are partly for the airport and partly for the highway

Remember guys, it's just a future vision. Clearly not everything is possible, and somethings are with alterations to radar, ILS equipment and in some cases major civil engineering works.
Regardless of the practicalities you’ve done a great job there, and whilst it might not be spot on it does show how much land there is to be played with and a rough idea of the potential.
The CAT3 thing interests me, as there are airports the world over with stands and taxiways as close as shown in your image.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 2nd time
