Air Baltic to cancel London route
Latvian carrier Air Baltic claims it has been forced to cancel a number of European routes because of encroaching competition from other budget airlines.
From March 27, Air Baltic is cancelling flights from its base at the Lithuanian capital Vilnius to London, Paris, Dublin and Rome.
The airline has blamed the demise of the four routes on expansion out of Vilnius by Ryanair and Wizzair.
Tadas Vizgirda, Air Baltic’s general manager said both Ryanair and Wizzair have announced new routes in Vilnius that “overlap with” Air Baltic’s destinations.
“The world is big enough,” he said, “and we would rather walk away from the crowd, to avoid the other two airlines flying wing-to-wing with each other.”
He said Vilnius airport has overcapacity on “a handful” of routes.
