For my own personal interest, is it classed as a diversion if a plane is rerouted via another airport to pick up extra passengers ongoing to the same destination the plane was originally going to?

I think C-GOWG departed Abz-Dalaman via Bhx to pick up passengers from here for the scheduled TOM814 flight from Birmingham


According to the movementsblog it was a technical diversion and the aircraft has now departed at 13:42 up to Glasgow so if there were any passengers on board they are stuck at BHX. There is a flight to Dalaman BY814 which was due out at 08:45 showing delayed until 17:00 as well as another regular TUI BY723 due out early this afternoon showing on time at 17:50 so whether there is some consolidation taking place or jiggery pokery if you like in which they case they may class as a technical diversion I don't know.

There was also a Wizz A321 weather diversion from LTN in the early hours now departed back there at 08:23. which probably by coincidence is also a Dalaman flight.

Would hate to have to work in TUI flight planning/ops room must be chaos at times. C-COWG ABZ (0700 Scheduled Departure) -Divert To BHX-Depart 1341 To GLA (1825 Scheduled Departure to DLM) -DLM-ABZ today which should have been a direct ABZ-DLM-ABZ flight at 7am this morning

Wonder if the ABZ passengers are still on there or got off at BHX to go to DLM on the 1710 From BHX from there or if they've flown the ABZ and the BHX (0845 Passengers this morning) up to Glasgow

Hate to be a flight planner on days like that, Flightradar is all over the place with the 3 flights
 
Wizz Air A321 (HA-LXM, W61015), operating Katowice (KTW) to LBA diverted into BHX (apparently due to a wet runway at LBA), landing at 18:45 (that's UTC. I think it would be 19:45 local). Initially, it was planned to continue to LBA, but now FR24 is showing it as operating BHX - KTW as WZZ1015 departing at 22:42.

Wet Runway, Does LBA capability not include wet runways ? You would think Leeds of all places would be able to handle a bit of rain ?

Here in Brum last night it rained all night, did any of our flights divert ?

The LBA runway surface is concrete which has exceptional friction characteristics and it is diamond grooved to assist with water run off and to provide additional friction.

The captains decision is the only one that matters.

We have had 2 Easyjet divert in G-EZGK A319 U22538 from Geneva and U2618 G-EZGN Divert in from Aberdeen

Looks like G-EZBX Easyjet A319 from Nice heading North might go Manchester or EMA still at 26,000ft over London but I reckon heading to us

Don’t understand why there all diverting towards Gatwick when they literally have no space.Why can’t they use bhx or Cardiff or even Exeter

It's not as simple as just having apron space to park aircraft. There are a lot more logistics to consider.
How many ground staff are available to handle the flights?
Do customs have enough staff at that time of night?
Are coaches available to get passengers to their destination airport?
Do crew need transport/hotel accommodation?
Does the airline have fuel/ground handling contracts at the diversion airport?
And probably a lot more to consider.

In addition to the factors indicated by Kevin there are a further myriad of complex factors not only for the current situation but for future plans for the aircraft which necessarily includes flight/ cabin crew rosters etc.The implication for one diversion is bad but for fifty plus flights (probable in the latest scenario) it is horrendous and there are few people who can handle such pressure. To be present during normal planning is stressful enough I cannot even imagine what the easyjet operations was like the other evening.

Well if you go back to the 70s and early 80s on some days Elmdon would handle up to 40 diverts in any one day.
Some days we saw over 30 at any one time.
To this day its hard to believe how they handled so many at a sleepy airport with few staff and little equipment !

Indeed, we had some incredible amounts of diversions in those days, particularly when Heathrow was closed due wx.
 
Indeed, I remember a row of BA 737s lined up on the short runway for three or four days in the very early 80’s
I think 40 lined up on the short and Elmdon aprons was the largest numbers I have seen.This in the late 1970s after there was a huge storm Birmingham was in the eye and took diverts from Heathrow,Gatwick, Luton and Manchester.

according to some people, you only need 1 day in each of the Yorkshire Dales, North Wales and Lake District "to have seen it all". Which is why its minibus tour number 3 this year of the Yorkshire Dales for me on 16th October. Different routes and different things to see each tour.
