Re: getting to LBA?!

thank you so much bhowani!

a good route is never boring..............so we'd love a good return route!! we arrive back, in theory, at 22.50 (i think) so traffic shouldn't be a problem - tho' quickest route will be! now i'm worried about the 'time to park car' comment! we're parking at the LBA carwatch carpark which, i thought, was v quick to park/ get to airport.

whie i'm on here - any ideas how long we should give ourselves to get thru' security? i've been reading some horror stories......which, along with the fact that i noticed that almost every flight was late taking off today, is making me really worried about choosing this airport! sigh!!

Re: getting to LBA?!

Parking doesn't take any longer than at any other airport in my previous experience in fact I have often found parking at LBA one of the quickest.

I have never really experienced particularly long waiting times to get through security, again no more so than any other airport. Like most airports leave yourself plenty of times as you never know what might happen. Every airport suffers at times especially in peak times.

LBA is busy for its terminal size but this is due to be expanded in the future (don't ask when!).

I personally would always choose LBA over the likes of MAN, thats not only because LBA is my local!

Getting back to getting to LBA from Sheffield - does someone in your party own a Sat Nav? Would take the stress out of the journey!

Hope the comments help. :drinks:

Re: getting to LBA?!

ah! sat navs!! afraid that in this house
A) can't afford one and
B) wouldn't trust 'em! (i was the in 1st lot at school allowed to use calculators but still had to check it on paper.....s'pose i'm a bit of a luddite with some things!)
heard to many horror stories and really prefer to map read. Never got lost before but have been caught out by bad road signs. Do you know if the airport is signposted.......and where that signage starts on our route......assuming they send us the best way, of course!
you're all being really helpful, thank you!

Re: getting to LBA?!

The airport is signposted heading North up the M1 and then the sign posts continue once off the motorway.

Even if you do get lost going through the centre of Leeds there are many sign posts and alternative routes that you can pick up to get you up to the airport such as the A660 although this can get rather busy heading up towards and through Headingley.

Re: getting to LBA?!

Done this many times and there are lots of quick ways if you know the shortcuts. But the most straightfoward route from the south is

M1
continue North onto M621
Exit M621 at junction 1
3rd exit off of roundabout - follow signs for outer ring road A6110
Continue on A6110 (become A6120 but still outer ring road) until roundabout with A65
Left on A65
Right onto A658

25 mins from M621 junction 1 to airport.
only major queue on this route will be on A6120 approaching roundabout with A647.

Re: getting to LBA?!

I agree with LS16. I use this route all the time, the Leeds Outer Ring Road is the easiest and quickest route from the M1 and avoids all the hassles of going into Leeds. The road is dual carriageway for the majority of the way.

Re: getting to LBA?!

Thank you so much LS16 - just been going over this route on google maps and it does look quite straightforward. I'm now feeling a little less worried!

any other top tips for a stress free journeyto LBA/time at LBA would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any!

Re: getting to LBA?!

Hello Pinkheart

Welcome to the forum, and don't ever regret choosing LBA to fly from. Its small, not beautifully formed, (but it soon will be better) but its ours and we love it!

If you really want to avoid going through Leeds to avoid taking any wrong turns and getting lost, you may wish to consider the following route, which is slightly longer, but almost impossible to get lost!

M1 from Sheffield to Junction 46, to the East of Leeds (so you don't go down the M621 into Leeds itself at all - when you get to the 5 lane stretch just South of Leeds you need the inside 2 lanes to continue on the M1)

From J46, turn LEFT on to A6120 Leeds Outer Ring Road and follow for approximately 9 miles until you reach the A660 (Otley, Skipton) which is the 9th roundabout you come to.

Turn RIGHT and follow A660 for 3.5 miles until you reach the traffic lights at the Dyneley Arms pub, at crossroads with A658 Bradford - Harrogate Road

Turn LEFT up hill on A658 and the airport is 2 miles on your left.

As far as I am aware there are airport signs all the way once you get on to the A6120. You will also get a nice tour of the Leeds suburbs into the bargain, with very few traffic lights as most junctions are roundabouts along the Ring Road.

Clearing Security time will depend on how busy the airport is on the day you fly, as with all airports. Just allow yourself plenty of time and from Sheffield to the airport the way I have suggested should take no more than 1.5 hours - I use this route regularly when I am returning from work meetings in Sheffield.

Re: getting to LBA?!

cheers for that , heather! loooks like a v simpe route and only a couple of miles longer. i think we'll take a copy of both routes - just incase - and i'll let the driver decide!! i'm hoping for a smooth journey straight thru' to gozo (we'll have taxi then ferry...then car when we arrive in malta! it's a bit of a slog - but worth it!), so fingers crossed!!
thanks again heather - and to everyone else who's helped. i made the right call in joining this forum and feel a lot more confident.

Re: getting to LBA?!

Pinkheart, enjoy your Ryanair flight and your holiday on Gozo. It should be nice and quiet, warm and sunny and not like here at all! At least you don't have to go far to get to the Gozo ferry from Luqa airport.

I thought our signposts in Leeds were good compared to Sheffield! And we don't have nasty bus gates all over with cameras waiting to get the unwary visitors to the City. You have a far better chance of getting through Leeds without a fine or under a tram than you do in Sheffield. Keep on flying from Leeds and before long you will know all the quick ways to get there.

PS If you do opt for the A65 route out of Leeds, watch out for approximately 6 miles of speed cameras! There are none on the route I mentioned round the Ring Road and at lunch time, there should be no queues at all.

Re: getting to LBA?!

Thanks again, Heather! weather's looking good for gozo - have you been there? wondered cos of your ferry comment - you're right, nowhere's far from anywhere esp. on gozo!!
Ta, aswell, for the speed camera tip - dreaded things. I'll tell you where's worse than sheffield or leeds - leicester! we were once on a very short visit (couple of hours!)to see friends who were emigrating. we turned right onto a ringroad to go anti-clockwise and 20mins later found out we were going clockwise....to this day we've no idea how it happened.......and we know others that suffered the same fate. weird!

[offtopic]Welcome to Forums4airports "pinkheart"

I have visited Gozo a couple of times, the first time was back in the 90's, the last time was just last year. We enjoyed the ferry crossing. The island has some quirky villages and beautiful beaches that are definitely worth a visit. On the downside, unfortunately the Maltese Government were withdrawing the old fashioned red and gray buses that used to operate on the island so it has lost some of the character it once had. Don't despair, they offer an excellent taxi service. On your arrival into port the taxi drivers will fight over you for your business. Don't be put off by this, they're definitely worth using. For about 20 euros you can hire a cab for the day, the driver becomes your tour guide and he will take you to all the places worth visiting and he will wait at each place for you to return so no time limitations.

appologies , mr/ms moderator, if i've broken rules by replying here - really not sure how i'd've replied otherwise and i couldn't NOT reply as that would be rude to a lovely, thoughtful person.

He was just joking because I was breaking my own rules. (but I'm allowed to :diablo: )

Have a great holiday and don't forget to come back on here after your trip. We have a thread all about Malta and Gozo if you would like to add to it... here

Re: getting to LBA?!

doh!!
did think it was a bit mean when it said you were the daddy/mommy of the whole shebang and you STILL got a telling off!!

cheers for the tip about the malta/gozo forum - i shall have a look at that in a bit!

Re: getting to LBA?!

Even though Aviador can claim "site founders privilege" or something I couldn't resist a jokey ticking off at a breach of the rules! Hope you manage to find LBIA Pinkheart (it may be England's highest airport but "International" airports wouldn't be so if they were hard to reach!!). Have a safe journey to us and if you enjoy your LBIA experience please be sure to mention it to your friends. :D

Re: getting to LBA?!

Hi Pinkheart

Hopefully nobody will notice this final comment on the subject and I won't get a ticking off for it, but to answer your question yes, I went to Gozo just once when on holiday in Malta. My sister used to have a house there in Attard. I thought Gozo was very peaceful and quiet and I was very impressed with the spectacular coastine.

Enjoy your holiday and when you get back I hope you will continue to visit the forum and keep in touch.

Heather

I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?
