Hi all, Reading over the last few pages "Boy" I so wish I had kept hold of all those CAA logs I used to write that book on Diversions - they were simply amazing reading but they weighed a Ton - well about Two tbh.

Fabulous memories Simon. I well remember that period. Particularly the great many diversions on 04/01/70. I had recently bought my first airband radio, and listening in that afternoon and evening i was in heaven!. Fog had enveloped LHR and we must have had almost a third of the BEA fleet, plus a couple of BOAC VC-10 and 707. I remember buying a copy of the Birmingham Post the next morning to find it one of the main stories with an accompanying photo of the 'short' runway absolutely heaving with aircraft. Mainly Tridents. Also the diversions of 30/01 81 were a stand-out day. I recall dashing to Elmdon ( as we still knew it) to see the BA 747 and Tristars plus lots more!. Happy days!

I think I read about this at the time a Ghana airways ?? VC10 diverted in & unloaded pax on apron & then taxied to remote park on 06/24 .... a few hours passed & no one had turned up to collect the crew, the crew made there own way back across the runway to the terminal on foot !

I'm not sure it was the same occasion, but I remember my Dad taking me to BHX and seeing runway 06/24 crammed with BEA aircraft and a few VC-10's and B707's. 1970 would have made me six years old, which would time about right. Also, 4 Jan 1970 was a Sunday which also ties in (we would have gone after Sunday lunch). I don't remember much else from the visit such as aircraft landing and taking off, but I certainly remember the packed short runway.
I have no idea how my Dad learned of the diversions, but he was well aware that I was 'plane crazy' as I would rush out of the house to see any aircraft that flew over - not that there were many to the north of BHX back then.

Kevin

That certainly would seem to be that occasion. All aircraft landed on runway 15 which meant they passed close by to our house in Hodge Hill ar the time. It was so unusual to have one aircraft after another landing, all evening. BHX was so much quieter in those days ( rather like it currently is).

Happy New Year All, I Remember this day well, I was standing on the spiral stairs for most of the day - bloody freazing but excited over the diversions, and of course all the rumours of aircraft holding that wanted to land, it was a great day.
