Mayhem?. Aborted take-off’s are regular part of the fabric of airport movements, and apart from delaying the departure of following aircraft for a few minutes no discernible disruption was evident. BHX is suitably equiped to cope with minor events even when handling the largest passenger aircraft.
 
Watching a chunk of the Airport Action live stream yesterday afternoon/evening, i was impressed with the efficiency of air traffic control.
Bearing in mind it is the height of the summer season, it at times reminded me of Gatwick, with aircraft getting airborne one end of the runway while another touched down.
Great to watch!. Well done to all at BHX.

I wonder if the current flow of traffic could benefit with having high speed exits? Perhaps the business case is not there given the current number of movements but this is pure guesswork on my part.

Is this why ATC exists? to control the inflow of aircraft to minimise the need of expedited regress of aircraft from the active runway. Sorry A330, BHX is regretably not another LHR.

No comparisons to LHR in the slightest, we rarely have one aircraft in the hold let alone five!

I was referring specifically to aircraft slowing down after touchdown before vacating from the active. If you click on this link BHX map on gcmap, we can see anything other than a prop landing on R33 will vacate via taxiway B or A. Both are 90 degree exits, meaning landing traffic would need to come to a virtual stop before negotiating the turn. This results in additional seconds of runaway usage while the aircraft departing is lined up and ready. I'm no expert, however this is outside of ATC's control and aircraft dependant.

A high speed exit such as Gatwick R08/R26 allows aircraft to vacate earlier while continuing to slow down. Have a look at the same map for Gatwick: Gcmap - Gatwick map

No doubt in time once traffic levels require them the airport will build them. For now we're probably some way off.

In the last 12 months, Luton handled almost 50% more flights than Birmingham with no RETs (Rapid Exit Taxiways) whilst also having to accommodate some aircraft backtracking the runway for takeoff.

As part of LTNs plans for a new terminal, they are proposing RETs on both runways so that probably gives an indication of what traffic levels require them (likely 20mppa or more).
 
RETs are only really any use when you have multiple arrivals or a mix of departures and arrivals on very short spacing. Gatwick and Heathrow have that all day long. At BHX, there are big windows where there is nothing using the runway, or with departures only.

Of course, with landing aircraft, you've got wake turbulence spacing to factor in. Which in most cases will be more than enough to get landed aircraft out of the way. And thats no issue with the big jets because the spacing is much more significant.

No doubt it'll be needed at some point (hopefully) - but i think for the time being there are better areas to spend money...
