Wow we even get them in sequence as MAN has TC-JOK this afternoon with same caveat but wind not to bad at present

You are a miserable chappie arn`t you if it had diverted to BHX you would have been over the moon

Birmingham Elmdon the major airport serving the UK “second” city with a geographically misaligned runway and ILS that works on only at one end !

geographically misaligned runway

Speaking of that, any idea why BHX is pretty much the only airport in the UK with a runway that doesn't have an East/West orientation?

They used to have the crosswind runway 06/24. I wonder why that wasn't developed into the main runway years ago?

Topography to the south west and the railway to the north east.

I think given the crazy weather patterns nowadays it matters little what orientation a runway has.

Just pleased all the planes get down in one piece. Good piloting by the Turkish Airlines crew and all others.

Wouldn’t agree the current alignment has increased risk , results in loss of traffic and operational penalties to the airlines. Effective use of 10,000’ with crosswind margins means aircraft can’t actually take advantage over the previous strip length for increase payload/range much of the time.

Lack fully functional ILS on one end also adds to the safety risk load of working through Elmdon.

These are serious issues and they have had some impact on attracting the desired long haul routes I can assure you.

There is another airport with a just as monumentally misaligned runway that also loses copious traffic and that’s Leeds -Yeadon

A third airport with a misaligned airport is Aberdeen again they lose traffic on a regular basis

I can't see the runway alignment being a major issue. Airports with East - West runways have been struggling with this last 2 storms due to the wind from the south. Regarding the ILS CAT 3, The need for CAT 3 is low visability which equates to little or no wind. Therefore not a problem if you have CAT 3 at one end.

Sorry have I missed something ? Does the above quote effect Turkish Airlines operations at BHX ?

And sometimes our misaligned runway is the reason aircraft divert from airports in Bristol and Cardiff when they can't land due to the weather. So thank goodness this country has BHX

Yes it does effect Turkish and many many others , true there are occasions when the Bristol Channel rolling mists take their toll.

Weren’t linking them just pointing two operating penalties Elmdon faces and can’t mitigate easily.

Well they all landed safely yesterday so what is your source for this information. And if TK were so concerned why haven't they left BHX and gone to BRS or EMA or CWL ?They can't be that concerned ?

Relative catchment sizes for one thing.

Other airports have their disadvantages too. Bristol is stuck on top of a 600 feet high plateau that was notorious for fog and mist when I was a lad before the site became Bristol's airport. It can be pea-soup at the airport but reasonably clear a quarter of a mile away. Its runway length and surface connectivity are also inadequate for a full-blown regional airport. Being stuck in a Green Belt it has little in the way of ancillary structures for such things as cargo. Cat3b ILS on one runway doesn't always help either - the reciprocal can't be so equipped because of the topography.

I don't think there is much danger of Turkish switching from BHX to BRS.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
