A quick look on FR24 LBA arrivals for tonight will also tell you that apart from G-JZBB due in from Antalya all the other B738's due in to Leeds tonight are aircraft that have been acquired as used aircraft. Only JZBB is one of the batch of B738 MG's that Jet2 has had from new. The B738MG's run from G-JZHJ to G-JZBS to my knowledge.

There is only one 737-8MG - G-JZHJ

Boeing stopped using customer codes in September 2017. The rest of the 'new' ones are simply 737-800s! 😉

If you are a pilot for Jet2, could you advise on Jet2's choice of where it bases the 'new' ones? Some bases seem to have a lot of them and others just a few. I'd have thought the bigger bases (with more customers) would be a better choice, so as to showcase the better Jet2 experience to more people. This seems not to be the case though. Any enlightenment would be much appreciated 👍 👍

Maintenance is one of the reasons they get moved around.

Your point about more of the newer ones being based at the bigger airports doesn’t make much difference as the product is the same as being on one of the older 738s from a customer perspective. Plus the bigger bases do get the new material with the A321neos being based there.

Surely if it’s a case of showcasing the better Jet2 experience surely they want to that across all bases not just the biggest ones.

The new NG's have much bigger overhead bins and mood lighting et al. Of all the Jet2 flying I have done, I have yet to fly one from BHX. Even last week I flew to Kalamata...another really old one. People say they're well kept and indeed they are, but they ain't the new ones 👍
To date I have never had a definitive answer as to why this is. Just best guesses.

I see. I haven’t traveled on one of the newer ones in a few years so wasn’t aware of that difference. As an employee I know they get moved around based on maintenance schedules but don’t know any other reasons as to why that is.

Yes what you say is correct according to Jethroes, however flight radar still calls all the 738's acquired new as 737-8MG's just as it still calls Ryanair's 737-8AS.

Originally the new ones were based at the new bases STN & BHX, as you say to ‘showcase the product’. Then at BRS too. But now those days are over they can be anywhere.
Those ‘new’ 800s have the short field performance (SFP) option, which enables them to have better performance on shorter runways. Therefore they are now scattered around the network so each base has a few of them.
Many of the other 800s that have arrived in recent years are also SFP (including the more spacious Sky Interior - bigger overhead bins).

Blackpool:-
Dalaman – No Change - 1 Weekly Monday
Lanzarote – No Change – 1 Weekly Wednesday
Tenerife – Added Tuesday Service – 2 Weekly – Tuesday/Friday

Net- Overall a net increase in ‘long’ flying from Blackpool with the gain of an extra TFS service. It goes live in Winter 2013/14 so will probably be a permanent fixture at BLK. Sad to see no other new routes at BLK – Maybe LPA for S15 or HER/PFO an increase to DLM? Who knows?
How times have changed. It's funny reading back through the old posts.

It was a shame they didn't transfer their BLK base to LPL after they moved from there.
My understanding is the BLK base was a success for the airline but the airport never achieved a critical mass enabling it to be profitable. In the end it was the airport, not the airline that pulled the plug. It would have been interesting to see how the airline would have developed from there in subsequent years.

They shifted most of it to Manchester at the time as LPL was not a base. At the time I’m sure they felt that was the most viable choice for them. As was mentioned they were quite happy at Blackpool but had no choice but to leave as the airport could not find a buyer and closed to the majority of operations.

This was in the era where Jet2holidays was just started to get going; but also; the furthest southern base for Jet2 was East Midlands. With no fleet on order it made perfect sense to consolidate into their largest base that they had - Manchester.

The Blackpool airport closure probably consolidated Jet2 at Manchester and lead them to looking at wide bodied aircraft to serve the North West. It give them an additional 2 based aircraft overnight and much more opportunity to expand over Blackpool.

Only a year later did they announced they would be order 27 brand new Boeing 737-800's. If Blackpool would have remained open would they have received the new 800's. Most probably yes eventually to expand their destinations. Would Jet2 have expanded at Blackpool to have an additional based aircraft there or even up to 4? Who knows - maybe they would have gone to 3 at tops.

The real question is, if, Blackpool had remained open and grown to 3 if not 4 aircraft would Jet2 ever considered Liverpool? Different catchment area yes and easier to get to form North Wales but would it not have Diluted the North West Catchment - Blackpool, Liverpool, Manchester.

You are right about critical mass ..That's what killed Doncaster and will preclude it being anything other than a money pit failure in the future sadly.

From someone I know in Blackpool who worked in Aviation., Blackpool Airport did not make any money from their Jet2 contract, that why they ended it.

Fair enough if that’s what they were told. But the bottom line is that they had no choice but to leave as the airport announced they were ceasing most operations not really giving Jet2 choice but to move.

I believe Liverpool Airport only reported making money after passenger figures surpassed 3.7m so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Blackpool never made any money. There is a good reason why airports are full of retail outlets.

Ive no idea if thats the case. Its true to say Blackpool had very little in the way of retail and offered free car parking to attract passengers but few revenue streams.

I didn't know where to ask this question and I believe it will apply to all airports.
Q - Are Jet2 becoming a card only airline for onboard purchases?
A friend has received a text to tell him that on board purchases are to be card only, yet I fly in 3 weeks and I haven't heard anything.
I have tried the Jet2 website but couldn't find a thing.

I know they were doing a trial to be cashless but that was only at Manchester, I wouldn’t be surprised though because most UK airlines are cashless part from Jet2.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?
