Horrific scenes at Tokyo Haneda airport, where a Japan Airlines A350 is in flames

The whole fuselage is ablaze and damage showing to the leading edge of the port engine. Mentioned on the BBC that it may have struck another aircraft on landing. The aircraft is destroyed. I can only pray that all on board were able to evacuate safely.

[EDIT] - Sky News reporting that all 379 pax and crew evacuated.

Not sure which thread this is appropriate for having read the discussion above about "local news" being relevant for this thread, but it is titled " random stuff! " so feels most appropriate currently (this refers to the BHX > Random Stuff thread).

Sad to see the news about an aircraft collision on the runway at Tokyo Haneda this morning involving a landing Japan Airlines A350 and a departing Japan Coastguard Dash 8 carrying aid following the earthquake.

All pax and crew got off the A350 but only one Coastguard crew member accounted for and alive at the moment.

Fire has completely engulfed the A350 now leading to what I'm guessing is the first full hull loss of the A350. One positive is that the fire took long enough to develop it gave passengers the time to evacuate safely.

I'm already intrigued to read the accident report for this one with two aircraft occupying the same runway, no fingers to point at anyone with but it does beg the question how on earth has this been allowed to happen.

I am hopeful of a positive outcome for those still unaccounted for.

Reports are saying it struck a coastguard plane, which was carrying several people who were on their way to provide earthquake relief.

I hope the people on the coastguard plane made it out but if any of them have passed away, I hope they may rest in peace, they were doing a brave duty.

It seems one got out from coast guard plane which was either a Saab340 or Dash8 as the cockpit can be seen in one of the videos but all have been accounted for which leaves nothing confimed either way.
Fingers crossed but seems the A350 pax and crew are lucky

Sadly all 5 crew members of the Japanese Coastguard plane were killed.

A BBC report said the pilot of the other aircraft had escaped so I don't know if he has now died?

One positive thing that has come out of this is that it is the first of the modern airliners built out of new materials to crash. A phenomenal amount of real data will be obtained from this, making the latest aircraft even safer than it already is.

I'm not sure what the flammability of the modern materials is, but it seemed to burn fiercely. I believe that it was after the British Airtours B737 fire at MAN that big changes were made to cabin furnishings with regard to flammability and toxicity of combustion gases. If the modern materials (carbon fibre/Kevlar) are combustible, can anything be done to improve their fire resistance? Obviously, these materials have benefits in weight, strength and corrosion resistance, but are they more susceptible to impact damage and fire?

Read something yesterday where it was claimed that the whole aircraft would have been destroyed in an hours or so rather that the 5 hours the A350 took but as each case is different it will have to wait for enquiy to complete the report., just out of interest the pilot of the Dash 8 did survive and it was the other 5 who were killed but he has burns but is consious

Alaska Airlines B737-MAX9 loses window

Alaska Airlines has grounded it's B737-MAX9 fleet, following a cabin window blowing out which resulted in an emergency return to land. Looking through the report, it looks like one of the over wing emergency exits that has been lost. The CAA is monitoring the situation.

#737MAX

I've just read that on Sky News. Another potentially damaging incident for Boeing, which will only further knock the confidence of people to fly on this aircraft type.

Makes me wonder if it's the 'bean counters' who are making the decisions at Boeing, rather than the engineers. If it is an over wing emergency exit that has been lost (these open outwardly, hinged at the top) and look similar to those on the B737-NG (-700, -800 and -900). Hopefully, it's an isolated incident and won't affect a huge number of aircraft in service.

[EDIT] - more information from DJ's aviation -

It appears not to be an over wing emergency exit, but the extra rear exit on the B737-MAX9 (I believe that these are also fitted to Ryanair's B737-MAX8-200's). I'm not sure if these doors open outwardly, like the over wing emergency exits or inwardly like the main cabin doors. If they open inwardly, it should be impossible for them to 'blow out', against cabin pressure.

I wonder if they will need to ground the Max fleet for checks in light of the Alaska Airlines incident

Hopefully not..Ryanairs` are the Max 8 and I understand not affected. This particular door is fitted to the Max 9 due to configuration...That`s as I understand it...maybe wrong.

it would appear that in the Japanese collision, the pilot may have gone onto the runway with the misapprehension that given his taxiing instruction including "number 1" meaning number 1 to use the runway having not been on frequency when JL516 got its landing clearance. Doesn't explain why they would turn off a taxiway onto the runway when not cleared to do that. It also needs to be established how easy it is to see holding points if the taxiway stop bars were out of action which appears to be been put in a Notam.

With it being on the runway for 40 seconds, I wondered what would be the distance the JAL aircraft would have been at when the DHC8 entered the runway,. Not knowing the approach speed but guessing it would be 140 to 150 knots, I would say JAL was around 2 miles out. I am not that sure that they would have seen anything on the runway apart from lights and no discernible aircraft as whatever lights the DHC8 had may have blended into the runway lights.

The other thing that strikes me is the transcript looks like JL516 was cleared to land only once. I'm wondering if from a safety standpoint whether there should be (a) reconfirmation of a landing clearance when an aircraft is 2 miles out, or (b) when a departing aircraft contacts the tower frequency whether an advisory should included y the controller in giving taxiing instructions along the lines of "Landing traffic 2 miles", especially if you have not spoken to the landing traffic after a other aircraft have contacted you. Maybe a 3rd option would be to do a general broadcast of "landing traffic 2 miles" by the controller without referring it to a given aircraft so that all aircraft and/or vehicles on frequency on the ground will be aware not to encroach onto the runway.

Pardon my ignorance but don't Ryanair Max8's, due to the 197 config, have the same door as the Max 9's?

If that is the case then it won't be long before all the Mad Max's are grounded again...We are out of LBA tomorrow with RYR so just hope it's the good old fashioned 800NG we have as a ride down to FUE

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
