How do they know? Thought the aircraft hadn't been found?

'Liked' because of the sentiments you express.

Wasn't sure where to put this so I posted it here.
Sadly an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX8 crashed shortly after take off from Addis Ababa on it's way to Nairobi. It's believed all 149 passengers and 8 crew were killed including 7 UK nationals.

Yes it is. Hopefully they can figure out what went wrong and fix it. Won't bring back the lost people though.

By coincidence I was in the act of creating an Ethiopian Airlines thread in the Airlines section of F4A which I've now posted.

Not sure if anyone has seen about the Aeroflot that landed on fire tonight, but that story is a miracle. I know there are reports of fatalities, but how that did not end up like Concorde I really do not know.

There is a video here of the aircraft landing in an intense fireball

I say this is a miracle, as for the life of me I cannot understand how the elevators were still functioning, the picture shown here

shows the entire tail section of the aircraft is missing/melted, now I know there is a massive lag time between the aircraft coming to a halt and the emergency services putting out the fire, but, how the cables did not melt during flight in that intense heat is beyond me, it genuinely is nothing short of a miracle that the aircraft did not crash and those pilots are nothing short of heroes. On the landing video, you can see the tip of the vertical stabiliser has flames spiking out of it, besides the huge fire tearing away from the left wing. I wonder how different this could have ended if the flight lasted minutes if not seconds longer.

It's insane they managed to land the aircraft in this state, and I'll say again they are nothing short of heroes

Preliminary word is that the fire was caused by a lightning strike, I'm not sure how credible this is, nor the information on fatalities, but the videos do not lie. Crazy scenes

Edit: Here are a few news articles on it, in case anyone want's to read up on it, obviously as it's a breaking story I wouldn't take the numbers as gospel. Hoping for the best

Sadly, it's now being reported that 41 people lost their lives in this tragic accident.
Firstly, may I pass on my condolences, thoughts and prayers to all affected.
It now appears that there was no pre-landing fire aboard the aircraft (as shown by the video linked by GliderPilot).
I don't believe it is right to speculate any further, until more information is available.
