CAA Stats April 2014

Haven't had a close look at SEN on here but it's racing up the 'league table' of airports, mainly on the back of the easyJet base but with the Flybe/Stobart Air initiative looking to bear more fruit this summer.

April stats were 100,224 passengers handled, up an eye-watering 48.3% on April 2013 with atms up 'just' 18.8%. The rolling 12-month total was 1,053,713, up 31.3% on a year ago.

SEN is rapidly heading into the top 20 UK airports league (on passengers handled) and at its present rate will replace either CWL (currently 1,083,397) or PIK (currently 1,086,521).

PIK has been on a downward spiral recently with its April 2014 passenger figures down 28.7% on April last year. CWL, on the other hand, was up 7.2% in April.

A measure of the respective current throughputs of these three airports is that in April SEN handled 100,224 passengers, PIK 79,745 and CWL 59,149.

CAA Stats

June 2014

CAA stats show that in June 105,278 passengers were handled, up 20.4% on June 2013.
Atms were up 22.1%

The rolling 12-month figure was 1,097,577, an increase of 33.4% on a year ago, which puts it into the top 20 UK airports (measured by passenger numbers) at number 19. It's above CWL (1.075 mppa) and PIK (1.056 mppa).

SEN's meteoric rise in the past couple of years is mainly due to the easyJet base.

SEN doesn't get too much exposure on F4A so I've had a look at its passenger numbers stretching back over the past decade, or nearly so. The result is staggering.

As recently as 2009 it was handling just 3,948 passengers in the year. In 2010 it dropped 9.2% to 3,583 before beginning its climb, one not without stumbles, to its present 1 million annual throughput. These are the annual passengers figures from then till now.

2009 3,948
2010 3,583 - 9.2%
2011 42,439 + 1084.5%
2012 616,974 + 1358.8%
2013 969,941 + 57.2%
2014 1,102,260 + 13.6%
2015 900,799 - 18.3%
2016 874,411 - 3%
2017 1,091,738 + 24.9%

Courtesy of CAA

The effect of easyJet opening a base in 2012 can be seen clearly, followed by some faltering as easyJet cut back a bit in 2015, but the airport regained some momentum last year thanks to Stobart's efforts and easyJet finding the airport a bit more to its liking again.

I have a soft spot for SEN , it's great to see it on the up. Im from Kent and do remember visiting it as a lad with not much to see apart from BAF Heralds and Viscounts. Although there was a period when there were a IT flights to the med run by Burstin Holidays.

Wasn't there a time 50-60-odd years ago when Southend was one of the busiest passenger airports in the country?

I do wonder what attracts Easyjet to SEN considering their base at STN but they do seem to be doing well there and pushed up the numbers.

I' m guessing there is sufficint local population to support it and convenience. Stansted does have a bit of a reputation of huge queues .Plus there always were holiday fights from SEN before anyhing from Stansted.

I think so.....but I'm a bit too young : -)
I just remember the quiet years. Maesk Air did operate a Dash 7 for many years from there to Billund.

SEN is powering back again (passenger numbers up nearly 25% in 2017) after a roller coaster ride in recent years - see #3 above.

June figures show 144,069 passengers passed through the terminal, up 33.9% on June 2017. Atms were up a huge 42.8%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,238,486, up 33.6% on a year ago.

The 3 newly based Ryanair 737s definitely gave Southend a boost in its passenger numbers!
For April the airport saw 187,479 passengers up 66% from 113,203 in April 2018. The rolling year now stands at 1,571,000 up 33% on 2018.
