Monday 16/12/24 the new daily Cross Country service to Edinburgh starts. I don't think it'll effect the Edinburgh route much as it'll take at 7 hours to get to Edinburgh but I do think it probably puts paid to any hope of a Newcastle route returning. Even if that hope was slim.

That’s still 5 hours on a train, so I wouldn’t say that route is completely dead in the water. Still unlikely to happen anytime soon mind.

I would be genuinely shocked to ever see Newcastle back as a route tbh.
Glasgow, Cork and Jersey I hold out more hope for.

Semi-interesting release today from Jet2 regarding their new LTN operation. Seems like some sort of opportunistic late move on slots from reading between the lines …

Not so long ago, they said themselves that 12 bases was the perfect number for them, so comes as a bit of a surprise getting a November 2024 announcement for Summer 2025 from a traditional IT operator (and now the 13th UK base).

This of course means nothing for CWL, but does show that Jet2 are reactive with their basing structure, also operating a number of W-patterns into the base due to slot restrictions. From looking at the map, this just leaves Wales as the only unserved region/geography in the UK without any form of Jet2 presence.

Potentially something for the new WG funding arrangement to hunt down in the immediate short term (With the hope of course that this form of operation could be relatively self-sufficient as most routes are within CWL’s core market).

I think the problem/challenge will be getting an airline like Jet2 to see Wales as a standalone region in itself and not just an extension and part of other regions of England.

Completely agree with this - I was referring to geographically rather than actually practically (and perhaps realistically) - Wales is the gaping hole on their map !

Yep hopefully one day they'll decide to fill that hole!

North Wales - LPL/MAN
Mid Wales - BHX
South Wales - BRS

I think that is probably how Jet2 see it. ............ but you never know

Seems that within the last 48hrs almost every UK airport has gained a new route, and even a new based airline in the case of LTN - however, not one sniffle of anything for CWL... (yet? hopefully!)

:cautious:

Since they’ve gone public on the £206m public funding, I would guess whoever may be interested (FR, W6 etc) in theory, would quite rightly be twiddling their thumbs for that to be available … It makes no sense at present to invest, when WG have gone public on providing certain support !

I know W6 made a complete horror show of CWL last time out due to crewing predominantly, but the makings of the schedule were actually in the realm of something feasible. The previous Welsh CEO had a big part to play in that, but I think they could be tempted back … They have market data on the key routes, with correct crewing, proper resourcing/base planning, and of course WG support throughout the early years, it could work …

I agree Tinkerman with the correct planning and crewing, their large spread of destinations could certainly provide routes from CWL not covered at present, without any competition.

If the airport/government were going to incentives an airline like that to create a base tbh I think the logical airline would be Ryanair. There's no baggage with them and they're the biggest LCC in Europe. Also they have a maintenance contract with Caerdav so they could be an option for line maintenance whereas WizzAir might use a non Welsh firm.

Really hoping that we something for Cardiff this week. Watching airport after airport get new routes and airlines like Easyjet serve airports like LeedsBradford (and by that i mean a smaller regional airport not far from one of its biggest bases) with non based flights on a route that Cardiff desperately needs a LCC option on is frustrating.

Really difficult situation Cardiff finds itself in one of several regional airports that really could do with some good news.

I completely agree. There are so many routes that TUI do exceptionally well on that an away based LCC could contribute to. PMI being the obvious but others such as Lanzarote, Corfu. Any completely unserved routes would be welcome too.

Something is either seriously wrong, or there is something in the pipeline that will surprise us all.

You'd think FR to PMI, BCN and MLA would be no brainers, considering some of the routes that they've launched to other airports over the past few weeks.
I also think CFU, previously served by Wizz and seemed to do well in passenger numbers and is even served from Teeside, as well as somewhere like ACE and LPA would work.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
