As we all know any airport that deals with Ryanair is held at the end of a barrel and there's no mercy when Ryanair doesn't get it's own way. The advantage with PIK is it has the longest runway in Scotland so certainly freighter traffic should always remain reasonably steady even if much of the passenger traffic goes east to GLA or EDI. Whatever the future of the airport holds, not only has it been the power horse for freight traffic in Scotland, it has also proven that it can handle and sustain a substantial amount of passenger traffic.

You really have to wonder why Ryanair are bothering to open a new maintenance hangar at PIK, when they clearly are not committed to the place. Every time a route from PIK ceases, it starts up at EDI, the next example being Gothenburg, which has been a Prestwick route for years, but will be moving to EDI from November. If it is true about the PIK- STN route ceasing, that, in my opinion, will be DEVASTATING for PIK, as it must be one of their busiest routes. As for the PIK management, it's time they stopped burying their heads in the sand and tried their utmost to bargain with RYR (difficult I know), to reverse this decline of Ryanair routes from the airport, before the place closes.

The Prestwick to Stansted route is now showing on the Ryanair website from November, but at a very much reduced frequency of 1 flight per day, except on Fridays and Sundays, when there are 2 per day. The flights are being operated by PIK-based aircraft. I suppose this is better than losing the route altogether. Still nothing showing for the Brussels Charleroi, Milan Bergamo, Palma Mallorca, Ibiza or Murcia routes -all of which operated last winter.

Murcia i think has gone from the uk for winter apart from Stansted and Dublin though i may be wrong at least there is some Stansted better than losing it

Palma routes also appear to have gone from the UK for winter, apart from the STN to PMI route. Even the DUB to PMI route appears to cease from November.

Talk is the 1st aircraft should be in new hanger 15th sept its almost complete now

Fingers crossed for a big opening ceremony with some new routes thrown in for good measure.

[textarea]20 millionth Prestwick Airport passenger for Ryanair

Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson MSP was at Glasgow Prestwick Airport yesterday to welcome Ryanair’s twenty millionth passenger at the hub. Ryanair started operations at Prestwick Airport in 1994 with its low-cost service to Dublin.

The lucky passenger received gifts and was congratulated by the Minister, airport CEO Iain Cochrane and Ryanair’s Maria Macken.

How many airframes were there in summer 2010?

That's good news for the airport if that's correct. Any word on new routes then?

There were 6 based aircraft for the summer 2010 timetable. Apart from the 3 Salzburg winter ski flights, no word yet on any new routes. I still find it unbelievable that, if it is true that there will be 7 based aircraft at PIK for the summer 2011 season, they can still only operate 1 flight a day to and from Stansted!

[textarea]Ryanair celebrate 20 millionth passenger at Prestwick Airport

A nurse became the 20 millionth passenger to fly with Ryanair from Prestwick Airport yesterday. Patricia McPhillimy was met at the airport by transport minister Keith Brown, who presented her with flowers and a bottle of champagne. She was also given a free return flight on any of the airline's routes.

Mrs McPhillimy is originally from Tipperary in Ireland, and said she often used the airline to fly back to see her family. The 49-year-old, from Barassie, near Troon, had just stepped off a flight from Dublin, where she had spent the weekend celebrating her sister's birthday. She said she would use her prize to help celebrate her wedding anniversary later this week, adding that her husband John would not now have to buy her flowers.

She said: ‘I was using Ryanair for a long time - as long as Ryanair has been here I've been using it. It's been a fantastic airline for me, it means I can go home more often.'

Ryanair began running passenger flights from Prestwick in 1994. Iain Cochrane, the airport's CEO, said its 20 millionth passenger was a ‘milestone’ that demonstrated the ‘great success’ of its partnership with the airport.

This is a fantastic achievement by Ryanair at Prestwick. Hopefully the success will lead to more choice of destinations in the future.

I agree totally. Prestwick used to have 29 Ryanair routes, which, since they expanded at Edinburgh, has been reduced to 22 routes, many of which are summer only.

We've had MLA for a year now with FR and it's been a huge success so far as I can tell. It should work well from PIK.

Re: Ryanair new hanger facility

[textarea]New Ryanair hangar opens at Prestwick Airport

Ryanair has opened a second maintenance hangar at Prestwick Airport, which will create up to 200 new jobs. The £8m facility, plus its existing hangar which opened in 2004, will support more than 400 jobs to maintain Ryanair's fleet of 260 aircraft.

The facility was officially opened on Tuesday by First Minister Alex Salmond and Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary. The Scottish government contributed £1.5m towards the cost of the hangar through a series of grants.

Mr Salmond said: ‘Despite competition for a number of European locations, Ryanair chose to open a second hangar in Ayrshire. This is testament to the skills and quality of the local workforce. The airline's commitment to expand its operations in Ayrshire builds on Prestwick's reputation as a centre for European excellence in maintenance, repair and overhaul projects.’

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
