They have yet to decide where the zone will be, as it states in the article. Without specifics of these zones then there is no way of predicting where exactly these will be, but I cannot see them being region wide for revenue reasons.

Have just read that London is about to spend 7.6 Billion on improvements to the transport infrastructure.
Tottenham court road tube station is currently having 500 Million spent on it. Isn't it a bit sickening how much the already massive infrastructure in London gets improved while the rest of the country has to wait for decades to get a tiny fraction of help.

Yes totally agree. If you live outside of London you get bugger all. What was the cost of the proposed link road? They could probably build road and rail links to both DSA and LBA for a fraction of the cost.

I am sure the link road will prove vital to the long term survival of Doncaster Airport. Does anybody have a plan/map of the route?

Have I read this right? £18 million has been awarded to the local authority towards this?

I dont think thats going to pay for it?

Going back to the rail link (HS2), my understanding was that this would route from London to Birmingham, then on to Manchester, and from there to Leeds, with possible future extension to Newcastle. If that is so, why would it go anywhere near South Yorkshire? Even if they could tunnel through the Pennines to get there, it would be adding miles to the journey between Manchester and Leeds (in fact probably doubling the distance) and adding more time to the journey. The whole point of it is to reduce time. Don't get me wrong, Sheffield is the 4th biggest city in England and should have far better rail links than it does - but it sort of seems to be in completely the wrong direction for a train between Manchester and Leeds, and DSA is even further away from the obvious route between those two cities. I just cannot see it happening - in fact I never will as I will be pushing up those daisies by the time anything gets built.

I think the idea of HS2 is to construct a line from Birmingham in the first phase.

Phase two would involve extending the line north from Birmingham to both Manchester and Leeds in a "Y" shape so there would be no need to tunnel under the Pennines as the two arms of the "Y" would be separate lines.

White Heather, all the latest publications about HS2 have indicated that the plans are now fixed on a Y shaped line, with a branch going up to manchester and another going up to south yorkshire, then leeds.

Don't forget that eventually they will be expecting to continue the lines much further north and so the yorkshire one should go up the east coast and the manchester one probably to Liverpool and the west coast.

The BBC has reported today the building of the controversial SARS road, a dual carriageway to connect Doncaster Sheffield airport, is to commence today.

Where there's a will there's a way as the saying goes. It just proves it is possible for airports to get funding for these type of projects with the likes of Cardiff airport and Leeds Bradford airports hot on the heals chasing for funding for such schemes.

It's the White Rose Way scheme that is starting today, not the airport link road (though both do end at the same roundabout!). Basically they are turning this: http://goo.gl/maps/URbg into a dual carriageway. They are putting in the bridge over the East Coast Mainline on 25/26th December this year. The airport link road will join the M18 roundabout from the south, heading eastbound and joining the Great North Road somewhere above Parrots Corner, before heading off to the airport. It's not just going to serve the airport, it's going to make access to the M18 a hell of a lot easier for those living in south-east Doncaster, as well as making it easier from getting from east to west. Personally I think it would have been built even without the airport. I don't think they've announced a start date for this scheme yet, but as it's been given the green light, hopefully it won't be long!

Thanks for correcting me ryan. I thought it was classed as the SARS road, I didn't realise there were two separate schemes. Like you say, I doubt it will be long once the White Rose Way is in place before they start the SARS.

Radio Sheffield has announced today that planning permision has been cleared for the Rail port and the link road which will form the first part of FARRS and that work on the scheme will soon commence.

Welcome to Forums4airports 'sprotyrover' and thank you for posting that information.

What's the likelyhood of the remaining part of FARRS being constructed once this section is complete?

Im under the impression that the construction of the connection to the airport is the responsibility of Peel/VAS. The whole lot was costed at £170 million or so I believe, so it will undoubtably be up to them to get on with the work now.

I went onto the Helios website a few months ago and they have the plans which you can down load, offthe top of my head, the railport link road will end at a roundabout which is about a mile and a half from Parrots Corner.

Heres a bit more about funding

The inland port scheme was awarded £18 million under the Regional Growth Fund which would go towards the development of FARRRS. Looking a the plans it seems that the railport owners will build the road to their development, leaving it open to Peel/VAS to continue the development onto the airport.

As we would imagine this will not be cheap, and probably be in the region of £100million when all things are considered. It really will have to pay off if they are going to invest more in the link road than they did to build the airport in the first place, and I believe the main focus behind doing this would be the development of housing and other non aviation related business to claw some money back and increase the value of the land.

The BBC is reporting the FARRS scheme has been approved by Doncaster Council.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
