The power of the press....wish I'd had that when I was speaking with jet2 over a problem I'd had with them. They just couldn't seem to get the grasp of repeat business and how important it is. No problem I thought. Flown Tui ever since and quite happy with them. Jet2's loss, my gain and BHX still gets my business. Win win for me and the airport I like to support.

Morning all,

I was wondering if anyone knew a 'definitive' answer as to why jet2 base all their older planes at BHX. I've heard it so many times before that it doesn't matter as they maintain their older aircraft very well or they use the newer ones at short field airports. The latter doesnt hold water as STN is all newer frames. What I'm after is not guesswork but the actual reason for this, if anyone knows it.
I've asked jet2 myself during a heated debate with one of their escalation managers. He didn't know and he couldn't find out either.
I would be very interested to know why this occurs.

Many thanks

Karl

I contacted Jet2.com about this several months ago via Twitter and the standard response was it was for operational issues.

I think the new builds are now stationed at STN, MAN, GLA and EDI. I do wonder if part of their contract with STN states that the new aircraft have to be used?

The only other possibility is that STN, MAN, GLA and EDI are all Easyjet bases so they think the modern 737s cabins are better equiped to compete with the newer EZY A320NEO's?

The new build B738s are based at STN, EDI, GLA, NCL (5 of 7 based), and around half of the MAN based B738s.
BHX is wholly older build aircraft along with LBA and NCL (2 of 7 based). Half of the MAN based B738s are older aircraft plus both ALC based B738s.

The newer ones are based at these bases as they have better field performance off shorter runways - so I am told ?

Yes I had heard that too Ian, which would make sense, but BHX, MAN, STN all have 10,000 ft runways, GLA, EDI, NCL and LBA much smaller runways lengths, so why no new 738s in LBA, and why use them from STN & MAN still?

guess its just a mystery!

While I didn’t notice a huge amount of wear and tear on the 737s I went on to and from Lanzarote, they did feel quite dated compared to the TCX A321s I went on to Gran Canaria (which we’re just a year old at the time). I was hoping the 737s would have the sky interior to improve cabin ambience, but my main issue was the lack of overhead TV screens the A321s had as it meant I didn’t have to watch everything on my phone. Disappointing for a 4hr flight to be honest.
Both airframes were above 10 years old.

The city and ski routes are now available for next winter, all subject to change of course.

City

Rome - Drops to 2x weekly from late Nove until mid Feb before going back to 4x weekly so same as this winter. Fri 12th and Mon 15th March have a second flight, I'm assuming rugby related?

Venice - Returns mid Feb at 2x weekly so again, same as this winter.

Prague - 4x weekly from the last week in Nov to the first week in Jan, other than that it stays at 2x weekly.

Krakow - Stays 2x weekly throughout.

Budapest - Follows Prague in going 4x weekly from the last week in Nov to the first week in Jan so an increase on this year.

Ski

Turin - Only 2x weekly throughout Feb so a slight decrease from this year when it was 2x weekly from Dec - Feb. Weekly for the rest.

Salzburg - Weekly on a Sat with two flights throughout Feb, same as this year.

Innsbruck - Weekly on a Sat so again, same as this year.

Grenoble - 2x weekly but Sat sees a second flight throughout most of Feb so a slight increase on this year.

Geneva - 2x weekly Dec and Jan, 4x weekly Feb and Mar, 3x weekly April similar to this year.

I'm sure that there will be changes between now and then.

Unsurprisingly extra capacity has been added in Oct and Nov, particularly for the school holidays.

For the peak Oct half term week Tenerife sees 13x flights, Palma 12, Lanzarote 11, Menorca 4 (second Sat), Fuerteventura 5 (second Sat), Dalaman 8 and Antalya 9.

Yes, lots of extra flights added now

Tenerife is now up to three flights on Saturdays on Oct 26th and from 9th Nov right through to 4th Jan

More destinations seeing a short term increase for this autumn. Info courtesy of OltonPete (y)

From 7 October
  • Tuesday extra Heraklion LS4223 up to 5 a week
  • Saturday Corfu LS4227 up to 3 a week
  • Sunday Larnaca LS4235 up to 4 a week
  • Saturday Las Palmas LS4233 now up to 5 a week
  • Wednesday Kos LS4237 now up to 3 a week
  • Friday Rhodes LS4229 now up to 5 a week

Jet2 have moved remarkably quickly to get short term capacity in place. It will be interesting to see what they now do with S20.
They already lease from Smartlynx, so if they can't get more 738s in time for s20, one solution could be the SmartLynx and Avion Express planes that were formerly leased by Thomas Cook.

I'd be very surprised if discussions were not already taking place :)

Turkey will no doubt get a substantial increase over current offerings, Canaries/Balaerics possible slight increases, and Greece will get a touch. Thats my two cents and thoughts.
