Never been to Gran Canaria I have been to Tenerife a long time ago! Maybe next year could be a Canary Island holiday!

Gran Canaria is the major Canary Island I know least about. Only been there once, about 20 years ago. Maybe we should think of a return visit.

Have a great time Brum X and I look forward to reading your impressions when you return.

Ive visited both Tenerife and Gran Canaria and i must admit i much prefer Gran Canaria, for one the beaches in Gran Canaria are lovely white sandy beaches whilst in Tenerife they are dark volcanic sand.

Don't much remember my holiday to Tenerife! I was 18 and was drunk for the entirety! Though i do remember a mate getting Pesetas to Pound rates muddled and paying £50 for a fake watch that wasn't even worth a tenner!:ROFLMAO:

Can anybody give me an idea what Puerto Rico is like for a family holiday? I've been having a look and am getting very mixed reviews, some glowing and some pretty horrendous.

I've had a couple of holidays like that to Tenerife. I've ended up with a pair, or two, of fake Ray Bans but to be honest they were pretty good and lasted well.

I did have the chance to go back with my wife just after we met for a more sober holiday, we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ive never been to Puerto Rico, the one thing i do know though is that it is very hilly with some hotels/Apts right up the cliff.

Funny enough I visited Puerto Rico last year with Thomas cook in November, stayed at the Servatur Puerto azul, mid 20s for the trip which was perfect, Lovely hotel in terms of the adult only parts, plenty of family's there too though, big pool, plenty of sunbeds and as an all inclusive package the food wasn't bad at all, think I paid something like £378 from the 9th to the 16th, as for a family holiday I think it will depend on the part you visit, I stayed towards the Europa centre part which was up high on the high side which was lovely, stunning views ( I'll attach a picture ) and it did seem a lot quieter up there than compared to the main Puerto Rico strip seems very lively at night with clubs and pubs open until the very early hours ( did not visit this part ),

beach is lovely there too, golden sands and fairly big so you don't feel cramped , there's also a lovely beach around the corner in Amadores which is only like a 5-10 minute walk around the corner.

Got to admit I've had some fantastic holidays in the Canary Islands. I've been to Gran Canaria and Tenerife several times, mostly for winter sun although I've been to Gran Canaria in September during a heat wave. The mercury rocketed to around 48'c, the hottest I've ever experienced.

As for preference between Gran Canaria and Tenerife (I've not visited any of the other islands) I can't say I prefered one over the other. I believe both islands have a lot to offer and it depends how much you are prepared to spend away from your resort. Both islands are volcanic and subtropical and boast some fascinating scenery for anybody prepared to venture out to see it.

We went on a Jeep trip up Mt Teide in Tenerife, the highest mountain in Spain and yes despite the island's location only a short distance from Sahara Desert in North Africa, the Canary Islands are part of Spain. We really enjoyed the trip and it was much more fun than the alternative coach trip to see the peak of the volcano.

The islands also have some interesting wildlife, some are unique to the Canary Islands including the Senegal Parrot from West Africa.

Also worth trying is one of the many boat trips, both islands have a number of trips, either geared to people just wanting a day trip in the sun with a dip in a lagoon bay or for those wanting to see the wildlife. If you want to see whales, seals and dolphins the trips will almost guarantee you will see them. I've done both the booze cruise trips and the wildlife trips and they're both very good and I would say they are value for money.

Having been on the MustCat in Tenerife I would
definitely recommend it. During our trip lunch was provided as part of the cost and the food was exceptionally good. The crew also caught a Tuna fish and cooked it on the boat. I've never eaten fish so fresh before!

I recall staying in the Riu Vistamar overlooking the Amadores beach. Great hotel with great facilities. An odd layout as everythings upside down with the swimming pools on the roof.

That hotel did look very very nice ! Had a browse of it when I came back and scores very highly, lovely views of either Puerto Rico beach or Amadores beach which I imagine is very nice, I do quite the look of that rooftop pool, I imagine it's very tranquil whilst relaxing with an ice cold drink ! Let's hope the towel wouldn't fall off the balcony mind eh ! The RIU hotel was visible from the adults only part of the Servatur too ! Certainly if you want a hotel with a stunning view Puerto Rico is the place to visit !

I'm not familiar if they do have one , La Palma has one that looks a tad similar to Maderia, fairy new to the Canary Islands mind, I seem to spend most of my time in the Balearic Islands ( Majorca more often that not)

La Gomera looks very nice, not sure they have an airport there though?

There is an airport there but it isn't suitable for charter flights from the UK. We were in Tenerife in 1994 (I remember the year for personal reasons) and we took an escorted coach tour from Tenerife to La Gomera. We and the coach travelled by ferry and we then enjoyed a tour of the island.

I remember being told by the tour guide that an airport had just been built. I thought no more of it until I read these posts. I've made a quick check and find that the La Gomera runway was completed in 1994 but the airport didn't open for another five years. Its runway is 1,500 metres long and it currently has one daily route, to Tenerife North with Binter, presumably with their ATR 72s.

The ferries still run regularly to other Canary islands including La Gomera from Los Cristianos on Tenerife, which is where we departed to La Gomera.

My wife and I are excited for the vacation we've booked in Spain and definitely we will go to the Canary. Tenerife is one of our eyeing place for our 1st stop :) There so many thing we want to do. I wanted to know if you have experience travelling to this wonderful Island.

@Cameron Pagge Yes there is plenty to do in the Canaries and in Spain generally. If you are planning on sticking to the tourist trail you might want to start in mainland Spain before visiting the Canary Islands. It's not that there isn't anything to do in the Canary Islands because there is plenty to do but if you're visiting from LA you will need to plan your journey well to fit in the highlights of Spain. At this time of year (autumn or fall as you might prefer to call it) the weather is starting to cool although it will still be pleasant and predominantly sunny the most part. You might prefer to do some cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. Between the big cities you will probably need a week to cover the main tourist spots. You can also cover Granada when you're in the Seville area. If wish to venture on to the Canary Islands you will probably need another week. You will probably need to fly to the Canaries from the mainland. You can fly between all the larger islands, or catch a ferry. The islands are volcanic, so if you are interested there are a number of tours that will take you to one of the volcanoes. I've visited Mt Teide, the highest mountain in Spain and it is apparently the highest mountain in the Atlantic. The Canary islands are sub tropical, predominantly warm, lush and green in the North, hot and dry in the South. The weather throughout most of the islands is largely dry for most of the year. The temperature tends to be between 25'c and 29'c in the South of the Islands for most of the year so if you want to spend part of your holiday on the beach you wont be disappointed. #canaryislands #touristtrail #Spain

Can't add much more to Aviador's post which provides a very good summary. The four major Canary Islands - Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura - all have different characteristics. Tenerife is the largest, busiest and most populous of the islands with Fuerteventura (with neighbouring Lanzarote it's the closest to the African coast) probably the quietest. Fuerteventura does appear to be rather gaunt and bare in outline but there are some fascinating places to explore there and the Jandia Peninsula is home to fabulous beaches.

My wife and I have paid numerous visits to Spain and its islands (Canary and Balearic) over many years and we are never bored there.

You will have a marvellous time whichever part of Spain and its islands you visit.

Obviously depending where you are going on your vacation but if you are heading to the mainland then i would recommend Barcelona as it's a beautiful city in the north east of the country and although not Spain i would also recommend a day trip to Gibraltar in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. It's a wonderful town and if you take a taxi tour of the rock you can get some fabulous views of not only Spain but North Africa across the straits.
