The Sacramento Bee is reporting Sacramento International Airport has said it is hopeful of attracting new international flights. Up until now the airport has been unable to attract services to destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, London or Frankfurt because of the limited market demand. The airport is hopeful that new smaller long range aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 will make more international destinations viable from the airport. The airport describes the new aircraft coming into service as a "game changer" #Sacramento #news #gamechanger

That would be interesting. For me the logical airline would be Delta to Amsterdam but there is a large selection of international flights from the San Francisco Bay area every day and that is only about 80 miles away. Sacramento is a decent enough city itself but from what I've seen of the place it's not very touristy and although it could be billed as access to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Reno would make more sense.

A Delta 767-300ER thrice weekly would work well, although DL aren't too expansive with TATL flights currently.
KLM thrice-weekly Airbus A330-200 is more likely, although I can think of other destinations that KLM would want to serve with this kind of flight too e.g. San Diego/Tampa who are both pushing for TATL routes (Tampa is pushing for AMS and MAN especially)

And KLM have a 2 daily service from SFO. So they might be reluctant to do it and generally they take Deltas lead when it comes to TATL routes. The US airlines are very cautious. And although Sacramento is a bigish city and of course the state capital they might not be interested in doing long haul when they supply just down the road.

Yes, I believe they offer daily 787-9 to SFO in winter with up to twice daily 77W/789 in summer. San Diego/Tampa/Orlando and possibly a re-entry to Dallas would be much better for KLM, I believe. It appears they haven't had much success in Miami though, recently.

Also, Skyteam don't have a very large presence in the bay area and tend to have more of a base in LAX. United wouldn't want to dilute their base in SFO and, although Lufthansa do operate to smaller US destinations they don't have suitable aircraft, so a BA 788 might be a good option with the growth they have initiated in the US (with MSY/AUS/SJC) and they have a big presence in the Bay area with SFO, SJC and OAK served from London.

Another (out there) option is a Condor 767.

BA could be a good option but i think BA would look more at Reno with it's close proximity to Lake Tahoe and the fact that it's a casino town though it's nothing like Las Vegas. If SMF is ever to get European flights it may have to look more to WOW and Icelandair and get a connection that way.
