Beat me to the punch!

They have left space for a fourth pier, which is a change to my prior understanding. The cargo area looks constrained. The development also leaves options open for reusing the space around terminal 1 and 3 - which might be a dramatic change.

The TP / Terminal 2 redevelopment application has just received unanimous planning consent in the hearing at Manchester Town Hall. Great news. Now for the construction phase.

An interesting update from "Marni1971" of SSC (see airport thread) who attended a meeting and was talked through the current plans, which seem to be quite fluid.

Promising that a need is foreseen for 3 A380 contact stands...

Copy and paste below:

--------------

From last nights TAS meeting with speakers from MAG about the airport redevelopment. I may have some bits mixed up but this is what I gather.

Car park work late 2016 into 2017

Pier one (west) starts to open 2018. Other Terminal building work continues.

Main works due to complete 2022. Current T2 remodelling into 2024.

Currently three piers planned. Option for 4th (west most). Using these designations and looking at the existing airside frontage I'm describing them numbered 4 1 2 3 from west to east.

Pier 2 has 3 A380 stands. Two contact at the moment. Third contact possible. Possible 3 air bridges for these.

Two options for pier 3. One is double sided with current pier C removed. Other is pier 4 one sided and pier c satellite removed. Pier c (minus satellite - roughly the 1974 structure) will then go single sided and connect into end of the new pier 3.

Plans showed retained pier b and terminal one southside frontage. Pier b new build?

Also terminal 3 as is with possible southern end removed. Also easterly extension.

Main north - south Taxiway will be two way from runway one, between hangers and pier b, all the way to new T2 pier 1. No bottlenecks. Only single way running when A380 is on the move (not enough space for another plane to pass A380 around the hangers corner). Also new complete taxiway parallel to runway one north of it. New taxiway lighting guidance system.

Inside the new terminal 2 looks very impressive. New building joined to old for large continuous spaces. Design and layout still evolving but looked very nice. Plenty of space and light. Minimal signage with new signage system.

Then came the radical redesign of the interior space:

Current departures level will be opened up. Landside area will push further into current airside. Current check in area will be more empty. Plenty of self check in kiosks.

Big change to check in desks. Instead of a long line of desks the line will be removed. 4 "tear drop shape" or huge triangular islands will house check in desks. Two in current building two in new building. These will spread from current check in desk positions through into what is now airside. They will also function as bag drops.

Moving past these is the airside line and new security area, roughly where today's duty free shop area is. Huge area. This will use all the space up to today's departure pier and south windows out onto the apron.

There are two new separate security areas. One in current building one in new. Both on current departures level. Having two Offers flexibility, option to close one when it's quiet, and help spread the load between two when busy. Also plenty of spare room for future security measures.

Another revelation is the entire departure lounge will be above here on a new upper floor. Each security check will flow into two new vertical circulation areas with lifts, escalators and stairs up to this new floor. One circulation area per security hall. And each will put passengers at opposite ends of the new floor. New floor is huge, the length of both old and new buildings and width from the apron to today's upper balcony above check in. All eateries, shopping and lounge area will be on this floor....

....apart from extra eating and seating, and airline lounges, which will be on yet another mezzanine level above the new departure floor.

Both these new floors will have large apron view Windows. I may be wrong but there may also be yet another part floor with more club lounge space above this.

The new departure floor also means the new piers will be taller, with pier lounge space and gate access on the same level as the new departure floor. No moving down a floor to the piers. Not sure if actual access to airbridge will still need stairs down like today.

Arrivals hall and baggage reclaim bigger. Lighter. Taller. New baggage system.

Ratio of airbridge / contact gates to remote gates swings much more towards contact gates.

US pre clearance area safeguarded but not a definite yet in the short term.

Metrolink line to Davenport green and hospital (Whythenshawe loop) protected with possible new station for T2. This could happen sooner than later.

Internal road network redesigned and tested to circa 2034. Includes new direct link from M56 roundabout into the drop off area as seen in the flythrough video.

Current budget is £850m. The one billion figure comes from inflation adjusted final figures by 2025.

Funded by MAG. Was explained as any expected 10/20/30 million - or more - additions that would have to be made to existing terminals over the next decade are all having their budgets pooled into this one pot.

Like I said it's a bit vague and still a work somewhat in progress. I've also probably forgot some things and made the odd error but I think that's the main points. Exciting times.

It's a bit basic but interesting to post none the less.

I do hope the piers are not as basic as this, as this design will not age well, and look outdated almost as soon as it's built. We know it's a basic render as there is just one jetbridge on the A380 (when I know for a fact there will be 3), but, can anyone guess what else is wrong with that jetbridge? It's quite subtle but it's an error.

It looks like the USPC pier is going to be one of the middle piers, as a document I have seen shows the customs point in the same area as the security hall so therefore needs direct, uninterrupted access to the gates.

Just had a look at the flythrough again. The piers look pretty bland there, so the most recent renders should come as no surprise. Hope they are larger to fit in the capacity and facilities we hope and expect them to contain. Take a look at the link below.

In terms of the timing of USPC, it depends on the phasing.

If the expanded apron and stands next to the motorway (pier unbuilt on the above video) is constructed first, and the piers then follow sequentially thereafter, the phasing should fit with USPC in 2018/19.

Just read today that package 1 of the MAN TP starts in January 2017.

Package one is:

-extension of the main terminal body and 2 piers
-2 multi storey car parks
-new baggage handling system
-reconfigure of access roads.

Now, the good bit.

We should be hearing about the aapproval of the USPC in the next 2 months, and this passage has been amended in the last week:

-Expanded security hall (which leads on to....)

-the provision of USPC facilities as a priority to be ready within the first stage of the TP.

Im just going to post this.

There have been no pictures released to the public of what the baggage hall will look like in the new T2, so not been able to post them.

Now, I know the below picture is going the be STN's new baggage hall, but, having seen a picture of the MAN one, they are remarkably similar, so, worth posting here as a 'this is roughly what it will look like'.

MAN must be going for a synergy to make MAN/STN look and feel very similar, certainly a fair few similarities:

But anyway, will make MAN look very bright and airy, should be 15 carousels at MAN if I remember rightly, but could have misheard.

Another update with regards to TP ground investigative work:

1.0 SUMMARY In preparation for the construction of new terminal extensions, ground investigation works have been in progress along the Terminal 2 Head of Stand road, the Gate 300/400 bussing yard, and at the far north-western end of the apron. MAN-TP UPDATE

For those who don't frequent 'dried fruit' the following has been posted by a well accredited user in answer to a question regarding the closure of stand 211:

Stand 211 is unaffected until later in the programme. Stand 212 closes in May/June to become the site of a temporary gate lounge to replace the gates 213-215 which are demolished by the end of summer to make way for the terminal extension. Stands 213-216 are reconfigured in May/June to be served from the 212 gate lounge. Tenants in that part of T2 are relocated to new accommodation. Stakeholders have been consulted. Watch those Operational Advice Notices on magworld.co.uk. This is the start of redevelopment MAN has not witnessed in many years, if indeed ever.

Things are at last starting to move.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME - MAJOR CONSTRUCTION WORKS COMMENCING 2017

1 Introduction
1.1 Major work will take place between Spring 2017 and early 2024 to construct an extension to Terminal Two, with a large multistorey car park, piers, associated aprons and taxilanes. There will be major works ongoing in landside areas, with tower and mobile cranes operating. There will also be multiple phases of airside works, involving stand and taxiway closures, taxiway diversions, reconfigurations and re-designations. From Summer 2018 onwards additional aprons and taxi lanes will be introduced.
1.2 AIP Supplements will advise of works and operational impact phase by phase, and aerodrome charts and textual data progressively updated.

2 Programme – Phase 1 Landside Works
2.1 18 April to 31 October 2017; Hours of operation, H24.

3 Operational Implications (Phase 1 Landside Works)
3.1 Site boundary fence erected at the northwest end of Taxiways Delta and November;
3.2 Stands 74, 86L, 219, and 249 withdrawn from use;
3.3 Stand 245 reinstated.

For those not familiar with MAN, the whole area behind the pier and back to the current wall of the check in hall will be the extended terminal building. The pier will be knocked down and then extended past the right of this image

Gives an idea of the scale we are looking at.

OAN 45/2017 - MAN-TP WEST PIER RECONFIGURATION (Phase 3)

The next phase of work will re-introduce Stands 213 and 214 in a new configuration as angled 'walk-out' stands. It will then close Stands 215 and 216 for similar re-configuration works. NB - This work runs concurrently with that on the former Stand 212(OAN 31/2017 refers).

See the link below for full details of dates (which is between Thursday 22nd June and Monday 26th June):

Per Roverman on pprune:

"TP progress - Stands 213 and 214 reopened today, minus air-bridges for walk-in walk-out use. Stands 215 and 216 now closed for three weeks for similar treatment. Stand 216 was a remote but will become a walk-out. Meanwhile the new gate lounge steelwork is going up at Stand 212. All this is temporary but longer-term i.e. until terminal extension completed in 2020. The Pier 1 construction site now fully closed off as a landside area alongside what remains of Staff West, steelwork to start going up in next few weeks. By the end of the year the skyline around T2 will be a forest of cranes."
