Travelled with Ryanair from LBA to Chania last September as our final destnation was on the south coast at Paleochora so making Heraklion airport a no-no due to the time and distances involved.
Chania is one of th Greek airports taken over on a franchise basis by Fraport who invested considerable sums to improve and enlarge the facilities prior to the 2017 season so whilst the pre-improved airport was generally described by passengers as cramped and lacking in facilities I have to say that the finished article made for a pleasant experience.
For anyone travelling west of Geogioupolis (Rethymnon, Chania etc and the south coast west of Plakias) this is the airport to use and NOT Heraklion due to its location and far superior facilities.
How long the facilities will remain superior is yet to be seen as more and more airlines have twigged that it is a better bet for the locations mentioned plus they are able to avoid the less than adequate Heraklion airport which, due to the overcrowding there, doesn't get much if any praise from passengers. Jet2 have finally added it to their flying programme for 2019. At last!
One thing to watch however concerns photography which applies to the majority of Greek airports. The facility is shared with the military (the US in this case) and taking photographs airside is illegal as one British man found out to his cost recently. He was arrested.
