Mercian Film Studios 'announcement expected later this year'.

The studio will have six sound stages for film and television, as well as post-production facilities. Knight wants to encourage a terrestrial television franchise to be based there, and the BBC is among those who are “very keen”, he said. “We’ve got a backlot which is basically countryside, where people can build castles and shoot things. A local landowner is happy to have productions.”

Why not? The BottleYard at Bristol is home to major productions and seems to be thriving.

This project was meant to be announced last year if i remember correctly and now its later this year. I'm not saying its not going to happen however when things like this keep getting pushed back, in my opinion it becomes increasingly unlikely as towns and cities all across the country are proposing stuff like this. Is this another example of Brum (Or indeed Solihull) talking the talk but not walking the walk.

Time will tell.

Green light for new eight-storey Edgbaston offices

First phase of New Garden Square will see 165,000 sq ft of new office accommodation developed on planned major mixed-use complex.

Plans for new offices as part of a £330 million development in Edgbaston were handed the green light today.

The New Garden Square project, off Hagley Road, will comprise 400 apartments, bars, restaurants and convenience stores, up to 900 car parking spaces and 500,000 sq ft of office accommodation.

City planning chiefs have today awarded permission for the first phase of the office space which will total 165,000 sq ft over eight storeys.

New Garden Square covers 10.7 acres and is being developed by a partnership of historic Birmingham property group Calthorpe Estates and London-based U+I which specialises in major mixed-use regeneration projects across the UK and Ireland.

Green light to build 375 apartments next to Warwickshire County Cricket Club have been approved.

The scheme will also feature a gym and up to five units which could be used for a range of purposes such as shops, a pub, restaurant or bank.

It also promises a new public square in front of the main entrance to the cricket ground to act as an 'arrival space'.

More than £1m is to be paid to the council to compensate for the lack of affordable housing as well as to invest in Cannon Hill Park and road improvements.

Took this photo this morning from my office window and what a blot on my view, however I have started a debate on SSC on whether this car park is suitable for a tall building or as it is officially the start of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter should remain low-rise.

Some people are totally against it saying that the spire of St Paul's church should remain the tallest structure in that view, however to people from outside Birmingham and the simple fact I have not shown it in my photo, just to the left of that photo is Birmingham's tallest structure the 152metre BT Tower.

Personally I think a tower around 100 metres would be ok and totally appropriate for the area.

And this proposal from Leeds (Yes Aviador) would look pretty cool on that ugly surface car park. (y)

I think that is exactly what is needed. At the moment we have mid-to-high-rises bunched around Snowhill 3 while all the land between St Chads and the BT tower is either undeveloped or low rise. Makes Snowhill 3 look like the edge of a cliff.

I mean the view can't really get much worse can it ? :ROFLMAO:

Definitely a prime spot for something tall, as is any location along that road.

If anything a good quality tall building would give a great marker for the end of the main CBD and the start of the Jewellery Quarter, or reverse if coming the other way.

After that though it definitely needs to remain low rise (y)

Interesting article about the potential Mercian Studios.

A green light from planning and a finalisation of a land deal is 'expected soon', Nikal are on board to deliver the residential element of the scheme and whilst we all thought it was going to be at the NEC there is a potential site in Central Birmingham, it may even be spread across the two sites. It also seems there may be real interest from Netflix.

Other vital decisions still to be made include a choice between two sites for the project, Payne said. The first is on the edge of Birmingham, the U.K.'s second-largest city, near its international airport. The second is in the center of Birmingham, near where the government's £55.7 billion High Speed 2 rail project, linking London with the U.K.'s Midlands and North, will arrive in the city. Ultimately, the project could be spread over the two sites, Payne said.

I'm sure we're all interested to see whether this, which could be a business and tourist destination in its own right, will have any affect on BHX.

I can see an increase in business jet movements but the big issue as always will be how many people are happy to travel in from London on HS2.

In the interview below Mr Knight admits that 'the talent will want to be in London' with Birmingham's advantage being it's proximity, especially after HS2 opens.

Airport wise as usual Heathrow will be the beneficiary. I can't see Hollywood Execs or pampered celebs choosing a lengthy connecting flight with limited departure times when London is spoilt for choice.

It will still be a huge positive for Birmingham though and if the airport ever manages to get a direct NY flight back then it may pick up some business from this.
