Loganair is set to take on the old Flybe route from the Isle of Man to Liverpool following discussions between the airline and the Manx Government.
Flights will start from Thursday 12th March and continue as an "interim solution" while further negotiations remain ongoing.
This will include the patient transfer service that operates on the Island.
The service allows all NHS patients to fly to medical facilities in Liverpool for treatment that is unavailable in the Isle of Man.
Speaking this morning in the House of Keys, the Infrastructure Minister made the announcement.

two flights per day with Loganair is a bit low for this route, but considering the circumstances, its better than nothing.

I understand the aircraft will now be a SAAB 340. Times 09.00 and 18.00 out Mon to Sat and 15.15 and 18.00 on Sundays.

Liverpool Airport is tweeting that the route will be 19 per week, not 14 as mentioned earlier. Schedule must still be evolving .

Not suprised as it was a busy route and a S340 is a lot smaller than a Dash 8. How many pax are involved in this hospital run each day? approx as I know it will vary

Thanks for the info lfc84 thats quite a lot. I can see that this Flybe replacement situation on all routes from all airports
is very much a learning curve, there are many problems in that lack of operators, aircraft and staff but will sort its
self out over a period of time just as the virus will but not instantly as it is just not possible.

Its.not really going to be a big enough aircraft, but at moment beggers cant be chooser i guess !

No but as things are at present it`s a million dollar question how many pax and also a matter of what aircraft are available

Surely that is a big question going forward what aircraft will be available with what carriers that are now left operating, some of these routes need a Dash 8 we will have to see if the previously mentioned elsewhere on here 18 Dash aircraft end up with someone soon, it would be another step on the way to recovering capacity.

There is really only 2 carriers for domestic now Eastern and Loganair...unless Stobart gets in on it. Have to wait and see.

The time to evaluate will be a year down the line from Flybe's collapse or when the coronavirus has well and truly gone. Loganair have possibly suprised people with such a response personally I didn't think they had the aircraft to do what they have. Loganair, Eastern, Blue Islands and Aurigny have done a super job so far hopefully prices won't be too high and the services will we well used.

For me the one issue remaining that should be addressed is those airports who don't have the connections that others have some of the smaller airports need connecting not just to the rest of the UK but the main points of Europe.

Its going to be a strange year for sure, Loganair could do with something a bit larger on LPL-IOM, its a pretty big domestic route, and a lifeline link for islanders. As a carrier they don't seem afraid on dropping routes that don't work, maybe will release more aircraft if that is so.

I notice they have arrivals at 17.10 and 17.20 today,.

I agree with your connections statement.

Scottish airline Loganair will provide vital air links between the Isle of Man and Liverpool to help residents needing medical treatment on the mainland.

The route was hit last week with the collapse of regional carrier Flybe, which affected 19 return flights a week between the island and Liverpool.

But Loganair, based in Paisley, near Glasgow, will operate two daily flights using a Saab 340 aircraft, which are seen as essential for Isle of Man residents requiring medical treatment in Liverpool and the North West.

Flybe held the patient transfer contract which enabled thousands of people to fly to the mainland for specialised treatment not available on the island.

The island’s infrastructure minister, Ray Harmer, said patients would be given “priority” on the flights, which will commence on Thursday, March 12.

Talks are under way for a similar deal to restore flights between the island and Manchester and Birmingham, said Mr Harmer.

He said Loganair had stepped in as an “interim solution while negotiations continue” about the long term future of the routes.

He added: “I have put Liverpool top of the list of destinations even though easyjet also operate the route, because of the needs of the patient transfer service.

“That means we have pre-booked seats each day for patients.”

Loganair chief executive, Jonathan Hinkles, said: “We understand how important this link is to the Isle of Man, and we have worked with the Isle of Man Government to provide this initial interim service.

“We fully expect to announce an expansion of our services in the coming weeks.”

He added: “We are interested in principle in providing a further range of services to and from the Isle of Man, including operating the Liverpool route on a permanent basis and are in advanced talks about restoring the Manchester and Birmingham routes, also lost in the collapse of Flybe.”

Loganair operates routes between the island and Edinburgh, as well as the London City connection on behalf of British Airways and it also aims to assume a number of UK routes previously operated by Flybe.

More than 2,000 jobs were lost when Flybe collapsed into administration, halting a range of routes, including from Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport.

Flybe said it had fallen victim to the coronavirus crisis with many people cancelling their travel plans in recent weeks.

The firm officially entered administration at 3am on March 5,
