Westjet moving all long haul routes to/from Calgary. This presumably means the end of Edinburgh-Toronto. Great news for Air Canada. Potentially disappointing for EDI. Will we see them start Edinburgh-Calgary? I have my doubts.

Other reports suggest this is only in relation to 787 operations. The first line of the article perhaps is a little misleading. It refers to all international routes. I certainly hope WestJet continue at EDI. Some competition for AC is a good thing.

I'd imagine that Edinburgh could be a MAX route?

Yes, WestJet, EDI-YYZ currently operates with a 7M8. Currently still on sale for S23. I doubt EDI will also get Calgary. I’m not sure if a 7M8 could reach Calgary?
It could however I’m not sure if they would fly it full there.

Westjet have removed from sale GLA and DUB to Toronto. EDI remains on sale for now. Prices on the EDI route, for weeks now have been crazy high. Double the price of Air Canada. Something is going on. I suspect we are about to hear about a change to their S23 TATL offerings.

I believe that they might be focusing long haul at their hub in Calgary.

A contact at EDI informed me that Westjet is being offered substantial incentives to not only retain YYZ route but to grow and start other routes. The other route is believed to be Calgary. The initial slots reports confirms this. You are correct about their strategy to coordinate long haul operations from Calgary. Time will tell if the carrot being dangled is enough to sway them. The YYZ route did perform extremely well in S22. Average load factor of around 97%. Quite impressive when you consider they are competing against AC.

New Route

EDI-Calgary

3 x weekly from 17th May 2023. No confirmation yet if route is seasonal or year round. Most likely seasonal.

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.

Well over 4 million steps taken this year already. And about 12,500 photos.
The joys of travel. Train from Edinburgh to Leeds is cancelled so having another night in Edinburgh and heading back in the morning!
Tbf Edinburgh isn't a bad city to be stuck in.
