EDI- JFK. Delta reversing decision to return to daily, year round. Actually “suspending route” from 8th January to 9th March 2024. Very disappointing news.

Delta starting to make some changes to schedules. Atlanta route - operating season will be extended. No surprise given how well the route performed in S23. Expected to operate in line with JFK and Boston schedules which run daily to end of October. JFK will continue year-round. Not reflected on systems as yet, operating aircraft on ATL route is also under review. A333 is in Line to replace 763.

All subject to change as always but positive news.

It doesn't surprise me Edinburgh is doing well. One of the advantages Edinburgh has along with London is Edinburgh is most definitely a US favourite place to visit in the UK. I don't know how Edinburgh compares with say flights to Manchester but I expect Edinburgh will be significantly more popular with American tourists visiting the UK than say Manchester?

I believe I’m correct to say that the percentage or ratio of US compared to UK pax to/from both countries is different. A far higher ratio or percentage of pax inbound to EDI are American. A smaller percentage of pax are UK or other nationalities traveling to the US. At Manchester, a higher percentage are UK nationals traveling to Orlando for example. The holiday crowd and travel agencies filling Virgin and Aer Lingus planes. This may be the reason why no US airlines currently operate to/from Manchester. The yields probably aren’t high enough.

Thanks for update. ATL is still showing as starting only in late-May - it would be a bit odd to start it that late yet run it through to the end of October, so hopefully it will start earlier. When you say "JFK will continue year-round" do you mean that it won't take a break in W24 like it will for W23?

Everything subject to change as we know. DL planned to operate ATL 5 x weekly in S23 but quickly increased to daily before it launched. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it start earlier, in line with Boston. The part suspension of JFK route this winter is like many other routes around the world. A small dip in demand in W23. Demand apparently is still very strong moving into spring/summer 24. I’d expect DL to return to fully year round. Particularly when a pesky competitor (JetBlue) is about to enter the EDI market.

Yes that is exactly what I was thinking. The US economy is ahead of where the UK economy is and its showing signs of recovery. The US vs UK ratio of passengers on flights to Scotland will benefit from this more so than flights to places like Manchester for the reasons mentioned.

It cuts both ways. The tourism market in either direction is unlikely to be high yielding, though I note that EUK claim higher yield from MAN than from DUB. I wonder what percentage of seats to EDI are prebooked by US travel companies. They obviously still make money, as did TCX from MAN on their tourist routes to US but it is interesting to see that US airlines are still prioritising tourist destinations over traditional legacy routes.

Manchester has much larger higher yielding business demand than EDI. But covid caused a hiatus in this market which is still to recover. UK passengers also seemed, finally, to revolt against US airlines pre covid because of their poor hard and soft products which, in the case of AA, was shocking. Thus VS take a some of DL’s strain, whilst at MAN, EUK replaces AA but with a better product.
