The radar room at LBA could probably squeeze in one more position to service another airfield's approach radar function but the room itself really couldn't be enlarged. A few years ago, Thinking Space pulled off a spectacular TARDIS job on the room but a facility with more floor space would have to be elsewhere on the airfield site. Hopefully this is all academic anyway and I'd be amazed if LBA would even consider providing ATC services to a competing airport.

Anyways, what became of the actual radar head at Doncaster? Is it still there or did Peel redeploy it?
Why would the radar room have to be on the airfield site? It could be anywhere, just needs good data links. I know it won't happen but interesting to discuss. Think of London City. Not a single controller on site! As for the radar at Don, I believe its still there.

Agreed. Radar rooms can theoretically be anywhere at all but obviously it makes sense to be on the airfield of concern if the same team of controllers are providing ADC too.

I hope the Doncaster radar is being looked after while it is inactive. They are jolly expensive!

I would think it's simply been switched off. I don't think there is anyone to look after it. The engineers at Don were made redundant when it closed, indeed at least one of them got a new job at LBA.

That’ll be how many £million to recommission? No wonder the ‘due diligence’ process is dragging out. But that’s for another thread.

Might have been two engineers! Assuming Peel still owns the radar head one would hope some sort of care and maintenance is ongoing for such an expensive asset. LBA could get first dibs as a Watchman replacement some time in the future.

That would go down well with the GA Community - a huge needless chunk of controlled airspace and no operational airport!
No matter, as long as Doncaster and the politicians have their airspace back to make reopening DSA easier. Let's hope the CAA hold firm on this and don't just roll over and give them what they want despite the impact on other airports and G.A, although nothing would surprise me.

It will be challenged by the GA community. Current situation for CAA appears to be path of least resistance and just remain silent. It’s one of the reasons I question why the council are constantly focussing on this aspect in their updates. Clearly the CAA aren’t rushing the process, they’re giving the Council time to decide what they’re actually doing,

The problem being that while they do that, there is constant uncertainty that is impacting the ongoing Airspace Change Programme. How can meaningful proposals be put forward by LBA, and MAN when nobody knows what airspace DSA will have, if any at all? The CAA are demanding proposals but sitting on this DSA issue is disrupting the planning process

More on the airspace and the Labour conference.

Not to my liking the airspace south of Lba is much better now for GA..
Doncaster was a major reason not to fly that direction unless like I and my flying friend who use Sandtoft and Strurgate a lot its heaven.
The Caa now have mandatory reporting in place for any infringements of airspace with a score table for the level of infringment that is incurred so you have to be very carefull and be sure you are up to date with the charts and can see the various restrictions in a bouncing around cockpit.
Doncaster were normally pretty helpfull but often overloaded with traffic crossing through or training with very little traffic inbound to the airfield. However they seem to have lots of support and the Caa will generally go with the flow.

It's a difficult one. Yes we are supposed to keep threads on track and yes there are DSA threads but as long as something has some relevance to the thread being posted in then all good in my eyes. That said I do think this has possibly gone off the LBA CC topic a little, but DSA reopening does seem to crop up in those meetings so can easily argue it's relevant.

according to some people, you only need 1 day in each of the Yorkshire Dales, North Wales and Lake District "to have seen it all". Which is why its minibus tour number 3 this year of the Yorkshire Dales for me on 16th October. Different routes and different things to see each tour.
Apologies for any issues today, I was planning on updating the site but sadly something went wrong so the upgrade has been postponed. Apologies again for any inconvenience caused.

Thank you for your kind donation to our running costs Jenny.
I've done 2 minibus tours with Mountain Goat this week. Monday was North York Moors with over 600 photos and today High Adventure in the Lakes with 750. photos. Slightly snap happy.
I've asked Gareth Southgate for the winning lottery numbers. He said 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
