Busiest September on record
The number of international passengers passing through Edinburgh Airport soared by 14.1% during the busiest September on record at the terminal.

1,291,640 passengers used Edinburgh Airport in September – up 8.4% on the same month last year.

It’s the 6 month in a row that more than one million passengers have passed through Edinburgh Airport.

International passengers continued the upward trend as services to Europe and further afield, such as New York, also proving popular.

Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport Gordon Dewar said:

“The fact that international passengers are driving continued growth is an indication of the global appeal that Edinburgh and Scotland has – people want to say they’ve been here and experienced our culture, our history and all the other fantastic things we have to offer.

“It also shows that we have a variety of destinations that people want to go to, be that a weekend break in Geneva, a sightseeing trip to New York or a family holiday to Fuerteventura.

“And our domestic numbers remain strong, which highlights the healthy passenger mix that we have at Edinburgh Airport.

“We’re constantly looking to add more options for passengers, such as the new Washington DC route from next summer, and we’re investing in improved facilities for passengers so we can accommodate increasing demand.”

Background

International passenger numbers were up due to the following:

  • Ryanair’s six new routes to Milan Bergamo, Girona, Port, Vigo and Warsaw Modlin which launched in March and the new three per week service to Eindhoven, which launched on the 1st of September.
  • Overall more people flew with easyJet with more flights operating to city destinations such as Geneva, Amsterdam, Paris CDG, Basel and Prague. Bilbao was launched on 30th April and has proved popular with the Edinburgh market.
  • Jet2 operated more services to Palma, Ibiza, Faro and Las Palmas. Destinations launched since last summer Girona, Thessaloniki, Almeria, Fuerteventura, Murcia and Naples all proved popular.
  • More passengers travelled between Oslo and Edinburgh with Norwegian as more flights operated and the aircraft were fuller than last year. The new services to Stewart International (New York), Providence Rhode Island and Bradley International (Hartford/Connecticut) proved popular.
  • Eurowings launched a new 6 per week service to Munich in March to join its services to Cologne and Dusseldorf.
  • Stobart air increased services to Dublin.

CAA stats for October 2017
1,224,410 passed through the airport up 8.5% on last year. The rolling year was 13,272,781 up 9.0% on 2016.

1.5 million passenger barrier broken

The 1.5 million passenger barrier has been broken for the first time ever at a Scottish airport as Edinburgh Airport recorded its busiest ever month on record.

A total of 1,501,988 people passed through the airport in July 2018 – an increase of 6.3% on the same month last year, with growth in both domestic and international markets.

The figures following the busy summer schedule as many families headed off on holiday, while inbound tourists flew into the capital to be greeted with spectacular Scottish sunshine!

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport said:

“These are fantastic figures for the airport, for Edinburgh and for Scotland, and they show an increase in passenger demand of 60% over the past 5 years – that is phenomenal growth and easily makes us one of Europe’s fastest growing airports.

“That growth is something we should be proud of as it delivers wide-ranging benefits for the country through job creation, tourism spend and business growth, but it also means we need to keep growing our infrastructure and build that additional capacity to cater for those increased numbers.

“We have invested huge sums already to keep up with that demand and are now for the first time in a position where we’re ahead of that curve thanks to a terminal expansion which will see us grow our passenger capacity to more than 17 million. That headroom is welcome and is a position we want to stay in and aim to do so through continued investment.

“Part of that wider picture is the need for improvements to the external infrastructure as well and that is an ongoing discussion with various partners as we must change and grow to maximise the opportunities that the airport brings.

“This extension is the beginning of a longer period of investment in our airport.Growth is our main strategic challenge and we will develop in order to enable growth for Edinburgh and Scotland as a whole.”

TOTALS now added, apologies for forgetting them :)

Total Terminal Passengers for January 2024 was 894,763, an increase of 9%, but peeling that data back reveals two unusual comparisons to last year.

  • EU Traffic is down by approximately 2.8%, my suspicion is WIZZ accounts for most of that, as they had four routes in January 2023, and none in January 2024, alongside Ryanair cutting WMI.
  • USA Traffic is also down (~18.96% on last year), as Delta suspended JFK which operate for all of 2023.

according to some people, you only need 1 day in each of the Yorkshire Dales, North Wales and Lake District "to have seen it all". Which is why its minibus tour number 3 this year of the Yorkshire Dales for me on 16th October. Different routes and different things to see each tour.
Apologies for any issues today, I was planning on updating the site but sadly something went wrong so the upgrade has been postponed. Apologies again for any inconvenience caused.

I've done 2 minibus tours with Mountain Goat this week. Monday was North York Moors with over 600 photos and today High Adventure in the Lakes with 750. photos. Slightly snap happy.
I've asked Gareth Southgate for the winning lottery numbers. He said 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
