[textarea]City's airport growth grounded by credit crunch

DOWN TO EARTH: Passenger figures have fallen

THE number of passengers using Edinburgh Airport slumped in December as the credit crunch took hold, new figures released today have revealed.
Airport operator BAA said the decline in passenger numbers seen in 2008 got worse in December, with passenger numbers down 2.5 per cent on December 2007 at 606,700.

In the full year, passenger numbers declined by 0.5 per cent to 8.99 million.

The figures are a clear sign that the slowdown in consumer spending as the UK enters recession is impacting on the number of people using the airport. They follow years of annual growth at Edinburgh Airport.

And they come just months after the company put plans to expand on to the Royal Highland Showground on hold.

However, the extent of the decline at Edinburgh Airport in 2008 was less severe than all six of the other UK airports owned by BAA.

Overall, BAA suffered a 6.9 per cent decline in December, and 2.8 per cent for the whole year.

Glasgow Airport passenger numbers declined by 10.7 per cent in December, with full-year numbers down 6.8 per cent at 8.1m.

It is expected that the figures have been influenced by airlines trimming the number of services they operate.

Despite the gloomy figures, the company remains confident that passenger numbers will again return to growth.

In a statement, BAA said: "In total the number of air transport movements was 5.8 per cent lower than last December as many airlines trimmed services in line with weakening demand.

"After a three-month sequence of gradually declining figures air cargo tonnage fell by 15.1 per cent in December.

"BAA expects, on the evidence of historic economic downturns, that the long-term prospects for growth remain good and passenger volumes will recover."

The total number of air transport movements at Edinburgh Airport was down 2.2 per cent at 8116 in December. The full-year decline was 0.6 per cent.

[textarea]City airport sets a new passenger numbers record

EDINBURGH Airport has enjoyed the busiest day in its 30-year history, bucking a trend that has seen passenger numbers at most UK airports decline.

As the airport prepares for a massive influx of holidaymakers this weekend, new figures show that Scotland's biggest airport enjoyed its busiest day ever last Friday with 35,899 passengers.

The previous record of 35,782 passengers was set on 29 Ju

Managing Director Gordon Dewar said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Edinburgh Airport, particularly given the current economic climate. It shows that there is still a strong demand for air travel to and from the Capital.

"We're particularly pleased that despite enjoying our busiest day ever, our customer service and security teams delivered a high quality service for our passengers."

A £40 million terminal extension is underway at the airport, with the first phase due to open to passengers in November.

Ron Hewitt, chief executive of Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, added: "This is a fantastic endorsement of what we have always said – that Edinburgh has strength in depth."

Our sunrise sectors are growing fast and will continue to make Edinburgh the place to invest."

The airport said it expected 125,600 passengers this weekend.

CAA Stats for July

Passenger numbers for July were 5.7% up compared with the same month last year. Passenger numbers for the month of July were 955,941

The rolling year passenger numbers stand at 8,959,172 -1.8% down.

Edinburgh is performing better than it's local rivals, this is primarily because of a new Ryanair base at the airport.

[textarea]Edinburgh has best ever September

Edinburgh Airport enjoyed its best-ever passenger figures last month as it benefited from the addition of 26 routes this year. The 873,200 passengers was a record for September and a 2.2 percent rise on a year earlier and the third month running of gains.

New destinations, including Helsinki and Marrakech, helped boost the numbers using Scotland's busiest airport. However, the impact of the Icelandic volcano ash cloud, the collapse of Flyglobespan and the British Airways cabin crew strikes means the year-to-date figure is still 5 percent down on 2009.

The passenger figures released by BAA yesterday also show that numbers at Glasgow Airport were down 5.7 percent at 675,300 during September and 5.1 percent lower at 268,300 at Aberdeen.

[textarea]Edinburgh Airport has record July

Edinburgh Airport set new records last month, with the most passengers since civilian flights started at the hub 64 years ago. The airport handled 992,50 passengers in July up 3.3% on the same month last year, and Saturday July 16 was the airport's single busiest day, with over 36,000 passing through its terminal – 4,000 above the month's average.

The records, attributed to an increase in international flights and routes, helped to bolster Edinburgh's position as Scotland's fastest-growing large airport. It follows the airport reporting its busiest ever March, April and June this year.

Edinburgh Airport managing director Kevin Brown said: ‘This fantastic performance is testament to the continued appeal and resilience of Edinburgh as a place in which to live, work and visit, and to the hard work and dedication of the team at the airport. We are continually adding new routes and upgrading our facilities. This choice, coupled with a focus on the passenger, seems to resonate with the travelling public.'

As Edinburgh Airport (EDI) appears to be on a roll in recent times I thought I'd have a look at its passenger throughput performance relative to Glasgow Airport (GLA).

Looking at the CAA stats for each year since 1996 the pattern shows clearly that GLA was once the busier of these two airports. Here are the annual totals for both in millions of passengers per annum (mppa) with the GLA figures shown first against each year.

1996 5.47 3.81

1997 6.01 4.16

1998 6.48 4.52

Edinburgh Airport sees 7% passenger rise

EDINBURGH Airport today revealed it had got 2015 off to a good start with a seven per cent rise in passenger numbers in January compared with the previous year.

Domestic and international traffic was both up, mainly due to new services which were not in place last year.

A total of 628,285 people travelled through the airport last month.

Domestic passengers were up by 7.2 per cent in January to a total of 344,840.

The section that I've highlighted in the penultimate paragraph of the press release shows the potential advantage that Scottish airports will have over their English counterparts when it comes to APD provision.

[textarea]2015 passenger numbers confirmed: 11:13 million passengers

Edinburgh Airport has today announced December’s passenger numbers showing that a grand total of 11,130,584 passengers passed through the airport in 2015 making it the busiest ever year at a Scottish Airport.

The annual total represents an increase of over 950,000 passengers from the 2014 total - further cementing Edinburgh Airport’s reputation as the place where Scotland meets the World.

The success was bolstered by particularly strong international passenger figures – which in December peaked with a 19 per cent year-on-year growth.

Welcoming the annual passenger numbers Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport’s Chief Executive, said:

“Last year we enhanced passenger choice by offering more routes and more destinations– and passengers responded by choosing to fly in and out of Edinburgh Airport in greater numbers than ever before."

“This unprecedented success of 11.13 million passengers through our doors highlights the draw of Edinburgh as a destination and the growing appeal that Scotland holds across the globe"

“The 2015 annual total also represents an increase of over 950,000 passengers from the previous year."

“We remain focused on delivering more success in the year ahead. In 2016 we will continue to improve the passenger experience at Edinburgh Airport with a multi-million pound investment in our check-in and baggage systems, an improved retail offering with greater choice products and we aim to expand our range of new routes and destinations in the year ahead."

“I was asked late last year how much more Edinburgh Airport can grow in a country with little over five million people; I explained that it was not the 5 million I was worried about but how the other seven billion across the globe get to visit us."

“Our international passenger figures for December show a 19 per cent year-on-year growth; this is a strong indicator of our global ambitions and gives reason to be optimistic about further growth in the year ahead.”

Scottish Government Minister for Transport and Islands Derek Mackay said:

“Reaching this milestone is a fantastic achievement and I congratulate the entire team at Edinburgh Airport for their record breaking efforts in 2015."

“The airport’s success brings benefits to both the local and national economies. By improving our international connectivity, we give Scottish businesses improved access to global markets and make the country even more attractive as a destination for tourists."

“Edinburgh Airport already offers a wide range of destinations, but the Scottish Government’s plan to cut Air Passenger Duty will help encourage airlines to develop new routes as well as help sustain existing ones."

“I wish Edinburgh Airport continued success and look forward to working with them once again in 2016.”[/textarea]
