Aer Lingus have announced plans to start operating flights from Doncaster Airport to Dublin. Flights will commence on the 20th May and will be operated by Aer Arran. The new service will offer onward connections to New York (JFK), Boston, Chicago and Orlando.

A similar service is being offered from Cardiff airport.
 
This might affect KLM up the road at HUY. Easier access to the US via Aer Lingus. I personally think this is a far better 'hit' for DSA than Easyjet.
 
This is really good news for DSA.

Its about time the airport attracted an legecy carrier to offer connections. Dublin is great airport to connect onto US flights. But like Humberside states the timings of both the DSA & MME routes only allow you to connect directly onto the New York JFK route.

So if you wanted to connect onto the Airlines other US routes to Boston, Washington, Chicago, Orlando or San Francisco you'll still have to Night stop for the evening in DUB. Where as if you went KLM from either say HUY or LBA you can connect onto KLM's worldwide daily network or onto the vast amouts of Northwest Airlines services.

So HUY and LBA with KLM may lose a little sleep on losing some of there JFK passengers. But I guess they wont be losing that much as they still offer there passengers worldwide routes connections with AMS 3/4 Times daily.

But this is still good news as it still means Aer Lingus via Dublin will be the quickest way to get to New York from the Yorkshire region.

Seriously it is good news but i question the long term viability of it. Weve seen this from EI before though now they have a 'struggling' (depending what you believe) regional operator likely to be making next to nothing on code shares.

Dont get me wrong it is good news for DSA and the first step into a 'legacy' carrier, i just dont believe it has longevity to it. Will be interesting to see if FR respond.
 
Aer Lingus used to offer this clear US immigration in Ireland facility on flights from Bristol in the 1990s when they operated the BRS-DUB route.

Take-up was low and the facility only lasted a couple of years. Most people carried on either using LHR or the KLM AMS connection. I used the AMS hub myself because in those days at least fares were more competitive with KLM and from memory the Dublin route wasn't much quicker.

Still a good alternative for punters using the airports now linked and I'm sure there are many who will use the connection so long as marketing is good and fare structure reasonable.

Sounds similar to the former offering by Aer Lingus at LBA but when Ryanair came in the service couldn't be sustained. As for the new service from DSA, so long as Aer Lingus remain the only operator the service should prove workable. If any competition comes, they will probably loose the service.

I dont think DSA will need to worry about compertition for Aer Lingus on the dublin route anytime soon. Ryanair have nearly pulled all the services from DSA over the last year or so, just leaving them with a 3 weekly Alicante route. I think that will be moved to LBA if Thomsons or Easyjet decided to increase they offerings at DSA in the furtue.

But i do think the new Aer Lingus route to Dublin will work better then the previous Ryanair offerings. As its a smaller aircraft and will be better suited to route in the long term.
 
I like the way its been advertised as a Doncaster to New York flight. Something tells me management wernt made aware of the announcement due to their rushed out press release yesterday.

It would seem ive brushed up a couple of Proon posters the wrong way and they are now believing they've proved me wrong....
 
This arrangement existed from LBA in the past when EI operated from here, and it was a complete failure. I suspect it will be the same from DSA too. It is, in my view, another example of the airport trying to make something that is fairly ordinary into something big, just so they can claim to operate to New York before LBA. Based on that, LBA could claim exactly the same with KLM to a host of destinations around the world via AMS.

I am sure the DUB element of the route will do OK though as the Aer Arann ATR72 will probably be more profitable with the sort of passenger numbers that DSA are likely to get on the route. Pity that the ATR doesn't need to use all the runway though!
 
This route is supposedly cancelled from October due to insufficient loads.
 
It is only rumour at the moment that the service is cancelled at the end of October, due to the fact that you can't book it after this date.
I do not have any inside information, so unless you are "in the know", it should be stated that it is rumoured "to finish at the end of October".
 
It seems the load factor for the route in May was around 40%.
 
It looks increasingly likely that this route is cancelled. The route remains unbookable from the end of October.

Perhaps this is what DSA should be flying now if they lose yet another route/airline and bearing in mind the possible loss of Easyjet too if rumours are to believed. It beggars belief though that they can't fill an ATR 72 to Dublin and back, but how often have we seen DSA losing airlines and routes over the past 5 yrs?
 
Average of 25 passengers per flight in July. Not too great.
 
According to an Enthusiasts mag I receive, the flight is to finish at the end of October. The aircraft is being moved to Cork so it can fly to MAN and BHX twice a day and free up an A320.
 
I have been told this myself, same with MME too apparently. It is thought that there will be a further two ATR's being aquired next year, and that DUB will have more aircraft. Ive also been told the routes may be taken back up next year, but with loads like that (MME is worse) then surely yields would have to be very good to keep them going!?

Unless they are subsidised, cough, cough ?
 
Reported elsewhere in the forum Aer Lingus (Stobart Air) are to relaunch the Dublin - Doncaster/Sheffield route this summer season. They plan to operate a 5x weekly programme (MON, TUE, THU, FRI & SUN). Notably, the airline is also reducing the number of flights it operates into neighbouring East Midlands airport.
