No, we tried. I posted in one of the threads a few weeks ago that timings, days and a couple of other things didn't work out for us from CWL in the end. We also got a first-cass package with our long-haul travel specialist from LHR - with Emirates again. In recent years we've flown from Gatwick with Emirates. Hopefully, we shall use Qatar sooner rather than later because I've read many excellent reports about their product.

I'm just as guilty and live closer to CWL than you do!

I'm flying out of LHR and back into CWL with Qatar.

I'm doing it the opposite way! Fly out of CWL and return to LHR!

All access drama – ‘Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport’ – takes off

Viewers are invited behind the scenes at Heathrow over the next six weeks as popular TV series ‘Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport’ (HBBA) launches into its fourth season. The series looks into the lives of colleagues who work tirelessly to get over 200,000 passengers and on average 5,000 tonnes of cargo through the airport, all in a day’s work.

Operating the airport at close to capacity is no easy feat for the 76,500 colleagues who work at Heathrow. This year, it took a 14-strong crew 1,200 coffees to get through over 500 hours of filming, across three months, producing three hours of gripping television drama that shows UK audiences exactly how it’s done.

Launching this Wednesday at 8pm on ITV, ‘Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport’ will dive into the drama, pride and excitement of running the best airport in Western Europe across six episodes. Not one day is ever the same at Heathrow so the crew found themselves stretched across arrivals, departures and the airfield, shadowing colleagues as they go about their daily tasks and respond to unexpected calls to duty. This series, crews spent most of their time filming in Terminal 2, a clear audience favourite having been recently voted the ‘World’s Best Airport Terminal’ by passengers.

Heathrow Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye said:

“Returning for a fourth series, ‘Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport’ is a project that encapsulates our dedicated network of colleagues who work around the clock to deliver a world-class airport service. The documentary gives millions of people a glimpse into the operations of one of the world’s busiest airports and I can tell you from experience, there is never a dull day.”

ITV welcomes back previous season favourites and debuts new faces of the operation, many of whom live locally to Heathrow. The series will star colleagues from Spelthorne, Berkshire and Richmond upon Thames, to name a few.

Audiences can go further behind the scenes on Heathrow’s new dedicated HBBA websitewww.heathrow.com/hbba launched this month. There, viewers can find more information on Heathrow facts and figures, the stars of the show and career opportunities available at the airport, as well as have the chance to win two return business class tickets to Malaysia, with Malaysia Airlines.

Boarding Call for Exporters: Heathrow announces the launch of new routes to Chinese cities
heathrow_175811958537922_thumb.jpg

  • China Southern to launch new direct services to Wuhan and Sanya – yet European hub airports competitors are still flying to 10 more Chinese destinations
  • Analysis from CEBR reveals that the value of exports passing through Heathrow has increased by £2.9 billion since Q1 2017 however risks from capacity constraints remain
  • For the second year, Heathrow partners with the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) ‘Exporting is GREAT’ campaign to award 20 SMEs grants to support their exporting ambitions
Heathrow today welcomed the arrival of two new direct routes to the Chinese cities: Wuhan and Sanya. Both destinations are a first for direct routes into Heathrow, the connection to Sanya is a first for Europe. These routes will allow for over 6,000 metric tonnes of additional cargo capacity and over 110,000 new seats for passengers travelling to the region – however, due to capacity constraints, European hub airports continue to have a competitive advantage in connecting to China.

From 30 May, China Southern will launch 3 new weekly services to Wuhan, a mega-city referred to as the “Chicago of China”, before beginning 2 weekly scheduled services to the popular tourist destination of Sanya on Hainan Island on 12 July.

Last year’s services to China via Heathrow contributed £510m to the UK economy, and supported up to 15,000 jobs, according to Frontier Economics. While connections to Chinese cities are clearly valuable to the UK, rival EU hub airports with capacity to connect directly to 10 other Chinese destinations, including mega cities like Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Kunming, are facilitating more trade and investment to their respective countries. The Government is expected to vote on a National Policy Statement on Heathrow’s plans for expansion over the coming weeks. Expansion will allow the airport the capacity to offer up to 40 new long haul destinations, as well as double its cargo capacity – providing the UK with much-needed trade infrastructure at a time when the country is looking to extend its trade relationships outside the EU.

The news of these new routes comes as Heathrow’s Export Climate Index for Q1, carried out by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), reveals that the value of exports passing through Heathrow to non-EU destinations increased by £2.9 billion compared to Q1 in 2017. However, the Export Climate Index has also shown growth in passenger numbers remains constant due the capacity constraints faced by Heathrow. Combined with the Index’s evidence that sea freight is declining, there is a risk that British exporters could look for alternative routes via European Hub airports to get their goods and services to long-haul markets.

Heathrow and the Department for International Trade’s ‘Exporting is GREAT’ campaign are nonetheless preparing businesses trade opportunities, and have today launched the second annual ‘World of Opportunity Programme’. This programme will award 20 SMEs with grants worth £2,000 to fund vital trade missions, participation in trade shows or foreign market research. DIT will also provide mentoring guidance from an International Trade Advisor to help their research and missions and promote the competition. A panel of exporting experts including Lord Deighton, Heathrow’s Chairman and Parveen Thornhill, Head of London & Devolved Administrations from DIT will select this year’s winners.

Heathrow’s Chairman Lord Deighton said:

“Today’s Export Climate Index results show that UK exporters are making the most of what they’ve got – and doubtless, they are excited about our new Chinese routes, and the untapped trade and investment opportunities these open up. However, our exporters also know they are at a disadvantage compared to their European counterparts, because Heathrow’s lack of capacity still means we are taking a limited and piecemeal approach to building long-haul trade routes. Heathrow is not only the country’s biggest airport, but also its biggest port by value – it is vital that we expand this key component of our trading infrastructure as we look for export opportunities outside the EU.

“A third runway will better enable British exporters to compete on a global stage, and we urge the Government to table its final National Policy Statement on expansion so that Parliament can vote and we can get on and deliver it.”

International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox MP said:

“Last year’s World of Opportunity Programme was enormously successful, helping to generate tens of thousands’ pounds of business for SMEs from across the UK.

“There is significant demand for UK goods and services across the globe, and my international economic department is here to support businesses of all sizes as they look to seize the wealth of opportunities available.”

Chinese Ambassador to the UK, HE Liu Xiaoming

“I would like to extend my congratulations on the launch of the new air routes this summer linking London Heathrow with two bustling Chinese cities of Wuhan and Sanya respectively. The key to sound relationships between states lies in the affinity between the peoples, which largely stems from mutual understanding.

“I sincerely hope that these new routes will become bridges of mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples, facilitating travels and exchanges between our two countries and giving fresh impetus to the Golden Era of the China-UK relationship.”

Climate protesters threaten Heathrow Airport 'shutdown' after 480 arrests

I take it all these people are either on holiday or don't work. If they are true to their convictions they will walk or cycle everywhere so we might expect to see thousands of them trudging westwards along the Great West Road out of central London.

If they reach airside I hope the police response is quick and determined. After all, what's to stop terrorists using the protestors as a cover?

These protestors claim they are taking such actions to get people to listen to them and take action. I very much doubt anyone affected or even seeing the impacts of these protests on the news will have much sympathy for their cause however just it is!

Peaceful, non-disruptive protests, go right ahead. However anything that causes such huge disruption should carry heavy punishments including prison sentences IMO.

There was a comment i saw on twitter about them disrupting London's public transport network in that the effect is just that more people end up using cars and taxis!
I'm sure the Police will be on full alert and no doubt will have drafted in extra officers, irony is by announcing it they'll probably end up causing less disruption than if they surprised the authorities.

Well after their plans to target the tube were made public before the day they switched to target the DLR. Hopefully with so much press already put out about their plans to target Heathrow they'll call it off.

While some of these people mean well in the main I bet most of them are the usual jump on a passing bandwagon type who just love to cause mayhem. The authorities should stamp on it now starting by removing that stupid boat with its foul mouthed DJ in Oxford st outside Hamleys toy shop full of children. If you or I parked our car there it would be removed and impounded in minutes, what makes them so different?

Also has anyone noticed how the BBC are all over it and just loving it with their holier than though approach with protesters spokespersons on our screens and radio non stop.

The protestors seem to have given up at Heathrow. Not much disruption, if any according to the news reports I saw.

Ill have fiver the little darling flew first class to share here concerns with us plebs.

Love the casual pose with all the right on stuff carefully oops sorry randomly lying around in front of her.

Says it all. Her defenders say she had to come home so would have flown anyway. No she didn't. She need not have gone to America in the first place if climate change is so important to her.

Like so many people who esouse a cause they are often hypocritical when it comes to events in their private lives clashing with their beliefs. Do as I say, not as I do.

I love the description of her by one critic - I think I can get away with repeating one of the words because an ancient meaning has long since fallen into disuse: "pompous, privileged pillock".

Sky News presenter Adam Boulton's description when interviewing one of the climate change activists (who could find no riposte other than walking out of the studio mid-interview) rings true with the likes of Ms Thompson. Mr Boulton accused his interviewee of being associated with "a load of incompetent, middle class, self-indulgent people who want to tell us how to live our lives."

I'm sure there are some genuine protestors who don't fit this description but is Mr Boulton completely wrong about a significant number?

Is somebody pulling my leg or is possible for somebody to set up camp in the nose gear of an aircraft for the whole duration and then falls out of the plane to his death on approach to Heathrow. I am still scratching my head trying to work out how this could happen ?

It's happened before, as the article mentions. How anyone can survive a long flight at 40,000 feet and in temperatures up to minus 60C beggars belief.

In 2012 a man made the undercarriage journey on a 12-hour flight from Angola only to fall as the aircraft approached Heathrow. He landed on the pavement and was believed to be dead or nearly dead just before he hit the ground according to the inquest.

In 2015 another man landed on a shop in Richmond. He had 'clung' on to the undercarriage of the aircraft all the way from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Bizarre, I still cannot for the life of me work out how this can happen ?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
