Heathrow: Britain's Busiest Airport
(ITV . Tonight at 9pm)

"A new season of the documentary series that goes behind-the-scenes at Britain’s biggest and busiest international airport; Heathrow. This episode explores the unexpected divisions of Heathrow such as their own dedicated police force, paramedics and animal reception centre.

Airline employees face the common dilemma of missing passengers on a departing flight and search through the departure lounge before they incur large penalties. Air traffic controllers attempt to ensure a smooth run of departures and arrivals which occur every 45 seconds.

PC’s Claire and Steve cooperate with airport staff to detain two individuals attempting to board flights who are wanted for arrest. While Heathrow’s security officers share an interesting insight into the obstacles they face when searching 200,000 carry-on bags a day.

Veteran Demi assists new Terminal Manager Callum as they manage a major weather disruption at the airport during one of their busiest weeks of the year. The airside safety team are on high alert as more than 50 flights are cancelled, and the added pressure of ensuring safe departures and arrivals falls to them as the pilots struggle to conduct basic manoeuvres.

Heathrow’s own vets show us the strict regulations they must abide by when allowing animals into the country as two dogs from Kenya are eager to be reunited with their owner as she relocates back to the UK.

A look at the Emirates Premium Lounge shows no expense is spared in ensuring customer satisfaction with countless bottles of champagnes as passengers have spent up to fourteen times the price of economy flights. While in Heathrow’s cargo warehouse, an extravagant delivery is being prepared for a flight to the USA."

BBC London News contacted me last week asking if there are any spotters out there who are planning on spotting on Christmas Day this year?

So far as I am concerned I've got better things to be doing over the Christmas period so I'll not be making an appearance at any airport to do spotting.

I guess there might be some people out there who might venture out if the weather's fine but I can't imagine there will be many who will.

Flexible workspace opens in Terminal 3

Global workspace provider Regus has today opened a third Regus Express location at Heathrow. The new Regus Express facility is located in Terminal 3 and is an exciting addition to the company’s global network of 3,000 high quality, convenient work locations which are used each day by millions of business customers. Regus’ other Heathrow hubs are located in Terminal 5 and Terminal 2.

The new 5,000 sq ft Terminal 3 facility is located just before security up a level from the Virgin check in area. The space houses twelve meeting rooms of various sizes, as well as a drop-in business lounge - a quiet, professional space offering ergonomic seating, free, secure Wi-Fi, shower facilities and complimentary refreshments.

This is the latest milestone in the roll-out of the Regus Express format - professional workspaces and office facilities at key transport hubs such as airports, railway stations and motorway service areas. The launch follows the roll-out of Regus Express facilities at Gatwick Airport, Birmingham Airport, as well as Heathrow in the UK, and locations across the globe including Copenhagen, Luxembourg, Mumbai and Sydney International Airports.

Richard Morris, UK CEO at Regus, comments: “The growing Regus Express network is making business travel much more productive for our customers across the globe and we’re delighted to announce that we have further extended it at the UK’s hub airport.

“Our strategy is to continually expand our global network and diversify the type of location we offer, making it even more convenient for our members to work flexibly and productively, when and where it suits them.”

John Arbuckle, Head of Property at Heathrow said: “The opening of the third Regus Express Business Centre is a fantastic milestone for us; we now offer business and meeting facilities in all terminals at Heathrow. This makes travelling even more convenient, providing customers with a quiet haven in between destinations to concentrate and relax.”

Two airport vehicles collided at the airport this morning causing the death of one man. This has caused some disruption to flights as an investigation is carried out.

One or two unsympathetic responses on PPRuNe this morning moaning about unnecessary delays with one numpty describing it as a minor incident. I wonder if he'd feel that way if it was a loved one of his who had been killed.

The matter has to be investigated thoroughly and efficiently and it will take some time. Not only will the coroner expect that but so too will the family and they are entitled to that. Any possible criminal offence also has to be looked into. It can't be done in five minutes.

Airbus and Heathrow celebrate 10th anniversary of first A380 flight to London

Heathrow and Airbus are celebrating the 10th anniversary of A380 operations at the airport, which began on March 18th 2008 with the arrival of the first A380 - a Singapore Airlines flight SQ308 from Singapore Changi airport, making Heathrow one of the first to welcome Airbus’ iconic double decker.

Heathrow is now the world’s busiest A380 airport by number of A380 operators, serving 78 million passengers a year. Every day, some 50 A380 flights carry 10% of Heathrow’s daily passenger traffic on a choice of nine airlines* to reach 15 global destinations.

Passenger traffic doubles every 15 years and the A380 is and remains the best solution for absorbing growth by using aircraft slots more efficiently; especially where airport capacity is limited. Like no other aircraft, the A380 unlocks growth in a comfortable and eco-friendly way. The A380 is also a good neighbour and won a UK noise abatement society award in recognition of its low noise operations, generating 50 per cent less noise energy on departure than its nearest competitor, as well as up to four times less when landing

Simon Eastburn, Director of Airline Business Development at Heathrow said: “It’s been fantastic to see nine of our airlines welcome the Airbus A380 over the past decade. Ten years from first flight, this pioneering aircraft has helped us reduce noise and improve efficiency whilst supporting continued passenger demand for long haul routes. This is one of the most popular aircraft for many passengers so we look forward to celebrating this milestone with them.”

To celebrate the tenth anniversary, Airbus and Heathrow will surprise passengers landing at Heathrow on select A380 flights from 18 to 28 March with A380 goodies. Ten lucky passengers will also receive VIP packs to continue their journey to London in style, including complimentary Porter service at the airport, Heathrow Express Business First tickets to Central London or WeKnowLondon Chauffeur Drive to winners’ chosen address, and a £250 WeKnowLondon voucher.

To date, more than 200 million passengers have enjoyed the A380 experience. According to a survey carried out by Epinion, 98% of A380 passengers would recommend flying on the A380 to their friends and family, and 60% are willing to make an extra effort to fly with the aircraft.*

As the smoothest, quietest flight, it offers unparalleled comfort in all classes. A modern feat of engineering and design, the A380 is the universally recognised benchmark. It provides airlines with a canvas to create the most outstanding business and first classes in the air, with amenities like showers, beds, bars and lounges.

Flying with the world’s leading airlines on over 120 routes and 60 destinations, the A380 is the passenger’s favourite. Airbus’ iconic superjumbo jet offers more personal space and the widest seats in the sky in all classes, including economy class.

Building on passengers’ excitement around the flagship A380, Airbus launched the first booking assistant of its kind in 2016: iflyA380.com. In January 2018, following the website’s success, Airbus unveiled the iflyA380 app, which enhances the website with more choices, features and content and new possibilities to interact with the A380.

David Dufrenois, Head of A380 Market Development at Airbus, said: “The A380 is essential to the operations of Heathrow, which is today the first hub in the world for long haul traffic. As 70% of long haul-traffic connects through hubs, the unique A380 offer strengthens Heathrow’s passenger appeal over other airports."

EI are wet leasing a few aircraft to BA for the summer season. They are operating rotations to DUB and HAM from T5. EI normally operate from T2 for their own flights.

The issue is after taking in all the Monarch slots at LGW BA really don’t have enough aircraft or crew. Quite a few operators are being wet leased for LGW including Titan, Germania etc. Also BA have sub leased a few slots to QR who are using them to start the LGW-DOH service.

Strong start to 2018 - Results for the three months ended 31 March 2018
heathrow_1758119998678601_thumb.jpg

  • Record start to the year – Passengers and trade flowing through Heathrow soared to record highs, as Heathrow climbed the global airport rankings coming in as the seventh best airport in the world and retaining the top spot in Western Europe for the fourth year running at the annual Skytrax Awards
  • Better service at lower cost – Passenger satisfaction with Heathrow is at its highest level, supported in Q1 by Heathrow’s investments in winter resilience which kept the UK’s hub open during one of the worst winters in recent years while delivering lower operating costs per passenger
  • Robust financial health – Lower operating costs per passenger and higher retail spending resulted in strong revenue growth of 3.8% to £680 million and increased Adjusted EBITDA by 5.2% to £402 million. Underpinned by a successful financing strategy that raised over £350 million in global markets
  • Phasing out single-use plastics – Heathrow is aiming to lead the aviation industry in cutting single-use plastics, the first step of which is Heathrow’s plan to recycle up to 13.5 million of the single-use coffee cups used at the airport annually
  • Milestone moment for expansion – As Heathrow begins to design its preferred expansion masterplan, the airport called for the public to submit innovative ideas on how to further improve the project. The move follows the backing of the northwest runway by the Transport Select Committee and thousands of people participating in Heathrow’s first planning consultation. Parliament is expected to vote on expanding Heathrow this summer, with the latest polling showing 75% of MPs back the project

John Holland-Kaye, Chief Executive Officer of Heathrow, said:

“We’re delighted that passengers are choosing Heathrow in record numbers – it’s is a strong signal that we’re delivering value for money. We’re within touching distance of Parliament voting on expanding Heathrow and now more than ever we’re committed to developing and delivering a hub airport that Britain can be proud of for generations to come.”

Mrs Yokel and I will be adding to the stats later this year. It will be the first time we've used LHR for quite a while.

Off to Aussie?

I thought you would be going via Doha from CWL haha!
No, we tried. I posted in one of the threads a few weeks ago that timings, days and a couple of other things didn't work out for us from CWL in the end. We also got a first-class package with our long-haul travel specialist from LHR - with Emirates again. In recent years we've flown from Gatwick with Emirates. Hopefully, we shall use Qatar sooner rather than later because I've read many excellent reports about their product.
