It looks like we beat Birmingham in August according to the CAA

Likely due to the fact that Jet2 and TUI aren't operating to destinations where quarantine is required, yet easyJet and Ryanair are. Bristol has a far larger presence from the latter two, whereas BHX has more of the former.

There have been a lot of anomalies during the pandemic. For instance, in April BRS handled 357 passengers whereas Aberdeen handled over 32,000 and Norwich over 4,000. That month BRS was the 21st busiest UK airport measured by passenger numbers. In August it was the seventh busiest (prior to the virus it had settled into eighth position each month). I'm sure there will be more curiosities before the pandemic effects run their course.

CAA Stats September 2020

219,701 passengers, down 76.3% on September 2019. Rolling 12-month total 3.916 million, down from 8.957 million 12 months ago which is a fall of 56.3%.

Some of you may be aware that I have been producing monthly statistical reports for both Manchester and Liverpool for a number of years. I have now decided to extend this to other airports and I'm therefore delighted to include Bristol into the collection - and hopefully you will find the data of interest.

All figures are based on the data provided by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Fascinating. Many thanks, Scottie Dog.

I have a a couple of questions.

Are you only including international routes in your top 25? In September 2020, for example, the CAA (table 12.2) shows the Edinburgh route with13,585 passengers and the Belfast International with 11,426. Glasgow had over 9,600.

The same applies with the overall total of 175,048. Is that the total for international passengers? The CAA (table 09) shows 219,701 total terminal passengers for September 2020.

Looking at the figures, they were as good as they could have been with this virus going on. One thing is certain the airport will be quiet through the winter.

CAA stats October 2020

Now published. 105,955 passengers i in the month, down 86% on October 2019. Rolling 12-month total 3.239 million down from 8.938 million a year ago.

12m end 31.10.20

Heathrow – 33,150,751 down 58.86%

Gatwick – 16,201,375 down 65.11%

Stansted – 11,063,512 down 60.83%

Manchester – 10,416,198 down 64.59%

Luton – 7,755,046 down 57.19%

Edinburgh – 5,363,863 down 63.66%

Birmingham – 4,355,928 down 65.64%

Bristol – 3,246,375 down 63.69%

Glasgow – 2,979,480 down 66.52%

Belfast Int – 2,436,516 down 61.83%

East Midlands – 1,286,899 down 72.76%

Slightly belatedly, but here is my monthly analysis of the CAA data for October 2020 - note there is always, for some unknown reason, a slight variation in the passenger figures between the combined domestic/international breakdown and the total terminal and transit total.

I recon that now we out of Europe proper that when flights sort of get back to some where normal,i can see that BRU wont be back. It was never a record breaking route and with the virus and out of Europe then i can see the end of the route. This is my thoughts.

Until now it's been operating for probably 30 years by Sabena and its successors, sometimes operated by a third party carrier for them such as Flybe and bmiregional/flybmi, although towards the end of its life flybmi operated on its own behalf before Brussels Airlines took the route back.

Around 20 years ago there were four daily ARJ85 return flights on weekdays.

I'd be surprised if Brussels is gone for ever with the same applying to Frankfurt. It really depends I suppose on (a) how quickly aviation recovers from the pandemic effects and (b) whether home-working and video conferencing really does become much more widespread post-pandemic which would obviously reduce the number of business travellers carried by the industry generally.

BRU and FRA no doubt also take a lot of leisure travellers that feed into the Star Alliance connections, as probably do many business travellers.

CAA stats for December 2020

Published today.

50,472 passengers were handled in the month, down 91.5% on December 2019. Atms were down 75.9% with the rolling 12-month total and also the total for the calendar year 2,192,725, down 75.5% on a year ago. The last time the airport handled as few passengers as this was 20 years ago in 2000.
