Subsidies are a remedy for weak demand but Ian Butty's point is that it is a supply side problem. There is demand from the Midlands but there is lack of UK based airlines willing to supply it.
Surprisingly no-one has posted this already but BBC Verify have done a good analysis of the terrible incident at Manchester airport this week. Which it appears took place at T2 parking.

I've travelled through T5 many times and never used an escalator landside. If they are there they are not presented to you on arrival at the bus terminal, but the lifts are.
At the end of the day it doesn't counter the statement that the escalators are quicker, like I said at the T2 Queen's...
When you said I needed to compare apples with apples I assumed you had been there.
T5 has no escalators landside but it has extensive escalators airside and I was refering to both when I made the comparison of moving floor to floor airside vs landside.
Using the lifts between arrivals and...
Not sure when you last used T5 but there are no escalators between arrivals and departures at T5.

So they have built a new security hall, removed the escalator...
Haven't they just removed a perfectly servicable escalator (and paid a not insignificant amount to do that)?
Weren't there already F&B operators on the departures level anyway, before the work started?
Which airport are you saying is not using lifts for the primary vertical circulation?
Regarding comparisons and escalators I flew through LHR at the weekend to Amsterdam.
I went through T5 but if you use that or the Queen's Terminal you can clearly see how lifts are much slower than escalators. Only in some situations where there are many floors to travel through are lifts...
Not saying there aren't problems at BHX but are you comparing apples with apples here?
If the average is 22mins at the busiest months through BHX isn't this going to be lower over the course of whole the year? Maybe even less than 15 minutes.
Also what is the average at MAN T3 when you include...
Having used the United service I saw it is being extensively used by passengers originating from the US, particularly at the front of the plane.
So the strong dollar might make the service more attractive to a US carrier.
Also through Newark the connections were good, not just to the US but...
I think this is the article where US flights are briefly discussed.

NB's response admittedly does not sound that positive in the context of the article.
The interesting fact brought by the...
There is still plenty of capacity not filled following the demise of Flybe. Where capacity has been filled by Loganair the tickets are actually very expensive compared to Flybe's fares.
A lot of people knock Flybe but the frequency of flights was excellent which is great if you are travelling...
