Yes, quite small (150m added to 2011m).
My layman's guess would be that while it's possible to operate planes like the B787 or A321XLR from the existing runway, it's probably quite borderline and airlines might have to run flights at less than full capacity (passengers or cargo) to make it...
IIRC they excluded all the "heavy rail" based options from the route option shortlist, so at best it would be light rail I think, at some point in the 2040s. And for starters probably just a metrobus extension.
It's coming along. Bridge and transport hub on top of the MSCP are now in place:
Sorry for the poor quality shot, was through the window of the airport flyer bus.
This article from March also has some pictures that show the scale of it...
A1 busses will be running every 8 minutes (instead of 12) during the day, and half-hourly at night from 6 April, great!
Not sure how much changes at night, sounds like they're just adding two or three addditional services in the wee hours. New timetable not published yet, so can't compare...
Bah, I thought the airport might've been teasing the return of the Munich route, but looks like it's just their PR people being a bit clueless
This ITV segment has some nice shots of the construction site:

Further expansion coming, new public consultation "imminent" apparently.

Of course a (heavy) rail link is possible. There are some challenges (the gradient), but I don't think it's anything that can't be solved one way or another (e.g. build station at lower level with lifts going up or such).
The main challenge is funding. We're probably looking at £150-200m at...
This Bristol Post article has a nice picture of the current progress towards the end:

Took another pic from the same spot as the last one when I passed through the airport this morning. Not much has changed in the area covered by my 18 March pics, although some of the earthworks looks more final now (some flat areas where there used to be big mountains).
However, big changes...
From Thursday 14 March 2024:
View from eastern end of the terminal airside where the access to the terrace is.
The piles of earth on the right are probably the height of a six storey building or so when approaching from the A38, so quite a lot going on there.
Just passport control, and there's a special short connection lane too.
After passport control there is a section for baggage screening to the right, but I always just head straight out towards the gates and that's never been a problem. I tend to travel relatively light though, hand baggage...
There's a fly-through video here as well:
Which confirms my suspicions about the canopy for the bus gates: it doesn't extend far enough to allow you to board/disembark without getting soaked in the rain. Who designs this stuff? Clearly people who don't use public transport themselves. Would it...
I'd also be interested in knowing what they're planning to do about the Border Control area, which seems too small to cope these days. There wasn't a single arrival in the last 12 months where I didn't have to wait 10-20 minutes in the western walkway or central walkway to even access the stairs...
I have no insights there, but I would guess that once the new transport hub is open the airport flyer operation will move there as well. At least it will be just a short walk to the terminal across the bridge then, without the need to lug bags up multiple flights of stairs and across a busy...
