Air cargo growth at EMA could lead to more than 12,000 new jobs, says study East Midlands Airport is poised to bolster its pivotal role in powering UK trade, with tens of thousands of jobs and billions in economic value set to be unlocked by growth in its cargo operation. A new study has shown EMA has a unique combination of strengths that make it perfectly placed to support increased demand for air freight in the years ahead. These include its central location and close proximity to major road and rail networks, and the fact that 80% of all large-scale warehouse sites are within 125 miles of EMA. It also specialises in the handling of express air freight - carried in dedicated aircraft, not in the "belly" of passenger planes. It is...
25th anniversary of air traffic control tower heralds era of new investment A towering landmark on the region’s horizon marks its 25th anniversary this month, with £22m of investment underway to prepare it for the next quarter of a century. East Midlands Airport’s 51-metre high Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower opened in 1999, replacing the smaller original tower to serve the expanding airport, and becoming one of the area’s most iconic and visible buildings. Ranking the fourth tallest in the UK, the control tower was built at a cost of £3.5m on 12 reinforced concrete pillars, weighing 1,000 tonnes and counter-balanced by 1,000 litres of water. On very windy days it can sway slightly, with staff reportedly experiencing motion sickness...

A security officer at East Midlands Airport (EMA) is preparing to take charity fundraising to new heights by scaling one of the tallest summits in the world Michael McCorkindale, a security team manager at EMA, is in training for a 20-day trek on Aconcagua in the Andes, which at just below 7,000m is the second highest peak outside the Himalayas. It is one of the challenges he must complete on a journey to eventually climb Everest, and he’s hoping to put the airport’s chosen charities on top of the world with his fundraising efforts. For the trek in January, he will join a small team including Argentinian Sherpas, and expects to be faced with altitude sickness due to low oxygen levels, temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius...

A successful year at EMA – and more to come By Steve Griffiths, EMA’s Managing Director It’s a year since I took up the reins as Managing Director at East Midlands Airport (EMA). It’s a year in which EMA has seen its first proper summer season since Covid, with 2.7m passengers travelling through the airport so far this year – a 21% increase on last year. And I’m looking ahead to an equally buoyant autumn and winter period, with a further 1.5m passengers expected to be welcomed at EMA this year. It’s great to see passenger confidence return and to see them choose EMA in such large numbers. It reflects the fact we offer people an effortless travel experience - one that we know people are prepared to travel from across the Midlands and...
