The longest of the Constellation types is 116 feet and the DC6B comes in at 105 feet. The BAC 1-11 - 107 feet and the DC9 - 119 feet. Looks like it's the DC9, which would mainly have been British Midland aircraft, with occasionals from Martinair and Aviaco. The Transavia Caravelles should too...

I'm fairly sure the current RW14 localiser is more or less level with the physical concrete of the SE end of the runway so replacing that with a modern antenna may be fairly straightforward. I'm not sure about the other end but I do remember watching an Aviogenex 737 clear it by only a few feet...

The part of Alpha between Bravo and Alpha 1 is closed every winter as the movement rate is lower. At the least, this reduces wear and tear and also allows for maintenance.

Wet runways don't help when landing in poor visibility with even a slight tailwind. That might have been a factor today.
