Saturday afternoons are very busy, and probably not helped by the weather today - I was out with the kids just south of Wakefield, and noticed inbounds vectoring and holding all over the place.
But the number of 737-300 movements has reduced since 2019, not increased. And I think the 757s left prior to 2019? (Not 100% on that).
Also, take into account the disappearance of smaller aircraft like Dash-8s and Jetstreams since 2019, and the trend should be for fewer movements per pax, not...
I used the A1 to get to work and back for the best part of two years, and I must say it’s nice to even be told of the cancellation. More usual is that a service simply doesn’t turn up, despite showing as Due in the app and on the bus stop displays. Nice enough buses, but hopeless service.
If the council hadn’t cheaped out when they built the tunnel under the runway extension and made it too short, that might be an option. But they did, and it isn’t.
The significance of Great Whernside is that it is likely to be the highest point within that quadrant from LBA, and hence defines the lowest level (broadly, 1000’ above terrain) that ATC can assign to an IFR aircraft in that quadrant. You can see these levels in the link below. Note that the...
I’ve wracked my brain over this, trying to work out how DSA could be successful (from the current start point).
Literally all I can come up with is enticing cargo operators from a “nearby airport” and/or enticing a large, based leisure airline from another “nearby airport”.
And the only way...
The ideal situation from a noise, fuel efficiency and CO2 point of view is for an arriving aircraft to reduce power in the cruise at top of descent, and not level off until it touches down.
Arrivals into Leeds from the SE work London Control at high level, then Scottish Control as they descend...
Subtext - negotiations on the ‘above market value’ offer from the Middle East are no longer happening. Might have been over weeks ago, for all anyone knows.
We are now firmly into CPO territory, and there can’t be a CPO unless the council has already tried to buy it - hence today’s statement...
If you wanted to sell it as an airport, for the best price, then I cannot for the life of me imagine why you would be uninstalling navaids and ATC equipment, as reinstating these things would take a lot of time and money, and would reduce the sale price accordingly. Which says to me that Peel...
An interesting update from Mayor Ros Jones today. For me, the main part of her message was this:
‘…we need to be realistic in that any potential investor may be more inclined to wait until we CPO the site given the airport is now closed and the cost and timescales involved in getting it back...
That’s a bit late - in the current ATC employment market, I’d expect that most of the controllers will have new jobs by then. Depending on how many of them are available and willing to be re-employed, it could take many months, even well into 2024, to build the qualified staffing levels back up...
I think this is correct. The prospect of a CPO being pursued because the land has value based on its suitability as an airport is all the motivation Peel needs to make the land as unsuitable as possible. Make it as unattractive (i.e. expensive to restore) as you can to any future buyer, and the...
Yes, I feel dreadful for the people affected (some of whom I’ve known for 20 years).
I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the ATC staff are fed up enough that they will want to move on, even if a last minute deal materialises.
All ATC services ended at 1800. The DSA-based Tower staff will be made redundant at midnight on Friday, but as I understand it the Radar controllers at Liverpool will keep their jobs (they are the same people who control Liverpool Tower and Radar).
