London City gains Bern flights

A new air link is being established between London City Airport and the Swiss capital of Bern.

Six flights a week will be operated from March 27 by Swiss regional carrier SkyWork Airlines.

Frequency is to rise to two flights a day on Sundays to Fridays from September 5

Fares will be sold through the trade with a lead-in of £52 single.

The airline will initially use a 31-seat Dornier 328 on the route but plans to raise capacity with the use of a 70-seat Bombardier Q400 after six months once the service has become established.

SkyWork is making its debut at London City as the airport loses flights to Basel.

The carrier is targeting skiers with a free baggage hold allowance of 20kg plus cabin baggage of 8kg. Skis, boot bags and sports equipment can be carried for £17.

Airline chief executive Tomislav Lang said: “There is great prestige flying to London City Airport and we are determined to make a success of this route.”

SkyWork is expanding its fleet to six aircraft by the end of the year with the addition of two Dornier 328s and two Q400s. A second 328 turboprop is due to enter service from March 10 in time for the London City launch.

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
