It depends on length of service. Most employers will apply PILON(Payment in lieu of Notice) as effectively it ceases employment earlier, but doesn’t impact contractual payments to the employee.

As Aer Lingus UK is relatively new, unless people transferred over from another group entity, then length of service is likely low for their employees.

Agree, sad situation for the staff impacted.

Statutory Notice Periods in the Uk are:
  • 1 month to 2 years: At least 1 week's notice.
  • 2 to 12 years: 1 week's notice for each full year of service (e.g., 5 years = 5 weeks).
  • 12 years or more: 12 weeks' notice.

I can understand that flights to Europe wont be all that popular (flying west to Dublin to fly back east) but Im sure theres a demand and surely theyve nothing to lose from an Aer Lingus perspective. Their fares from Dublin to Europe seem very competitive. Maybe they are avoiding conflict with BA?
I would have said they probably have a lot to lose as they’d need to reconfigure the whole hub. For example the first wave of all the flights to europe depart Dublin 06:00 to 08;00, which is the same time as the regional flights are heading over to the uk. So you need to base the aircraft in the uk, fly them over to DUB early morning and you’ve then messed up the a whole idea of connecting to the US flights. Of course you could operate a very dense schedule where you have aircraft based in LBA and DUB flying say 6 x daily but then more seats to fill and you’d need to repeat that at all the other uk departure points, so more aircraft, pilots, crew needed.
LBAYorkie the Aer Lingus was making a profit of about 3 Million per Aircaft and Flights over World cup were well booked as well so I`m sure there is more to it but staff have not even been told they are redundent yet
Airlines will usually talk about returns on investment or capital or operating margin rather than a £ value per aircraft. £3 million is great if you invested £1 million to earn it. If you invested £100 million, then it’s worse than just putting the money in the bank. All the data suggests Aer Lingus uk was generating a return well below peers in the IAG stable and below their 12-15% target. When that happens most businesses would logically look at the detailed performance data and make an assessment of how feasible it would be to drive an improvement or whether to just shift the aircraft somewhere else. Thats the thing with planes, they are the most mobile asset there is. An underperforming factory is very hard to move - 2 x A330s, very easy.

Even though based on the current hub operation European connections may not all be optimal what do they have to lose by offering through tickets?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
