I posted an item last Saturday (25th) in this thread saying that the hotel had opened - see #616 above.

There was an item on the ITV West local News programme towards the end of last week about its opening.

They've even added a section to their "At the airport" page, but I'm not quite sure why they're calling the section heading just "Hampton by Hilton" instead of "Hampton by Hilton Hotel" or somesuch. Not sure the H by H brand is strong enough to make sure even the last person know what this refers to.

I become confused (not difficult with me) with the various brands within a generic hotel chain name - I believe many are franchises anyway.

There is a Hampton by Hilton hotel in Bond Street next to the Holiday Inn, as well as other Hilton names in the central area: DoubleTree by Hilton next to St Mary Redcliffe Church and the Hilton Garden Inn at Temple Way. There are a couple more DoubleTrees north and south of the city.

I imagine it's bound to lose some trade.

In the 1950s I lived about half a mile from what is now the Holiday Inn. In those days the site was an American-style 1930s roadhouse - the A38 then (in pre-M5 days) was the main artery from the North and Midlands to the South West - before it became a motel in the late 50s/early 60s. All traces of its history have now gone with the modern Holiday Inn building.

I walked through the landside arrivals area this week and noticed that the new M & S Simply Food outlet seems nearly ready. The boarding has gone and they appear to be in the process of completing the inside.

On another note, does anyone know when work will begin on the first multi-storey car park? it's supposed to start this year. The airport obtained permission to substantially increase the Silver Zone car park on condition that the multi-storey work would follow.

The western end of the terminal extension is still being worked on. I note that part of the roof of the passageway from terminal to drop-off car park has been removed meaning a walk in the open air for a short section. I assume this is a temporary measure to aid the current works.

I believe they are building a covered walkway to the hotel. That would have to mean a covered bridge over the road.

M&S Simply Food

Had an email from BRS today saying the M&S Simply Food outlet in Arrivals is now open and will operate 24/7.

The goods in point also known as the TCP or terminal control point was moved a couple of years from the western side to the eastern side next to the fire station

Its soon moving to its original location, by the gate gourmet building and the control tower.

Its got competition from WH Smith next door and Ritazza oppisite it.

i went up to winters lane today. I left to go home going the redhill way. I notice the new car park is nearly over to winters lane. I did not realise it was that big,so new car park is huge in terms of parking.
a side note. I was sat out side the car in a chair and the sun beating down was right spring like day.they were giving 4 and a half kms vis so every thing landing as they should. I was up there from 11.30 till 14.00 hrs. ice cream man missing as that would have gone down very well.

I was around there a month or two ago and was surprised how extensive the car park extension is. Surprised that they managed to get local authority approval for that size. The first multi-storey car park should see construction begin on the North Side later this year

I've been wondering about that. Do I remember correctly that the airport has applied for an amendment to the original planning application for the MSCP, wanting to build fewer stories? Will it still have the 'transport interchange' on top then, or is the airport first builing "the other" block of the MSCP?

I believe the original planning consent was for the first MSCP to be built prior to the extension of the South Side car park, known as Cogloop. The airport successfully achieved a variation on this last year which resulted in the South Side car park being built (it's not yet completed) prior to the MSCP. The airport used the argument that passenger numbers had exceeded the original estimates and there was an urgent need for car parking space this summer. This is puzzling because the consultative committee minutes (see next two paragraphs) suggest that Cogloop might not be open until autumn.

This is a relevant part of the airport consultative committee minutes for the meeting held on 25 January this year.

Mark Herbert, Planning Manager, updated members on the hotel (which should be opened in February), the multi storey car park (works to commence in October 2017, for completion in spring 2018) and work to the Cogloop area being completed over the summer/autumn. Permitted development works would take place for the walkway at the back of the hotel. The Western apron works had commenced, but no application had been made to change the restrictions. Future works within the 2011 consent, which included a passenger limit of 10 million, would include the fire station, the second phase of the multi storey car park and the replacement of the administrative building for stands. In the longer term, airport management would communicate with the committee regarding forecasting passenger numbers.

The 'future' works don't mention the transport interchange. Neither is the eastern walkway mentioned that will be necessary to link the main terminal with the stands that will be built on the site of the admin building (old terminal).

Perhaps there are 'future future works' still to be put into a timeline.

There was an up date to the multi car par to only build three of the five floors, with prevision to add the other two when required due to costs, so no transport hub for some time yet as this is part of the second multi car park on even on the radar at this time.
