They have mentioned the current terminal expansion. But in which direction? The eastern walkway when it is built to connect the current terminal to the North Side house does not fit in my mind as a terminal expansion. There is no more space on the other side as the terminal has expanded as much as it can and there willbe the new Airline building positioned there.

I couldn't find the planning applications on the N Somerset website following the airport's link.

However, this 'drive-through' video on the airport's website seems to indicate that most if not all terminal expansion will be at the western end of the current building, although the video might be misleading in that respect.

The Eastern walkway is a separate item.

Given the overall cost of these plans if they are approved makes me wonder why the airport does not install travellators along the Western walkway and Eastern walkway when it is built. I'm not bothered and actually enjoy the exercise before and after sitting in an aircraft seat but I know there are people less mobile than me and families with young children who find the 400-metre trek to the far end of the Western walkway something of a trial.

Air bridges would be an excellent feature too but I'm told that low cost airlines don't like them as it can slow down turn-arounds and I suppose they have to pay for using them.

Yet both Ryanair and Easyjet use them at airports on the continent so they can't be that averse to them.
It may also be possible just use them for Thomas Cook and TUI and KLM as none of them seem to mind using them.

Perhaps it's an urban myth but the airport is sometimes said to be unlikely to install an airbridge until (if) it gets a long haul scheduled service. It already has planning permission.

150 jobs created for Welsh construction firm R&M Williams

A partnership between R&M Williams and Bristol Airport has this year created 150 new job opportunities for the construction sector in Wales.

Cardiff and Swansea-based R&M Williams has won three building contracts with the Airport, the latest awarded this month with news that a new £5million Airline Crew Building project will be built by the firm.

The projects, worth a combined total of £18 million to R&M Williams, are part of ongoing development which will enable to the Airport to handle up to 10 million passengers by the early 2020s.

In the past 12 months, the company has started work on a new fire station - due for completion in January - and is currently providing the framework for a state-of-the-art administration building on site, which will be in development until September 2019.

The latest Airline Crew Building will provide a new security search area for staff entering the building, and will provide premium accommodation for airlines, ground handlers and partners who need to be close to the terminal and aircraft operating areas.

Darryn Parry, Managing Director of R&M Williams, said:

“We are thrilled that Bristol Airport has chosen to partner with us on a number of its expansion projects this year. With the announcement of each new building, R&M Williams has had the opportunity to create yet more jobs for local construction workers, as well as for Wales and South West Supply Chain Partners. We hope that this will pave the way for a great deal more collaborations in the future.

“The construction sector in Wales is second-to-none, and it’s great that the project team at Bristol Airport has recognised that a strong relationship across the border carries with it some amazing opportunities for high quality and unique developments.”

It was mentioned a few posts back as to were there any travelators going to be installed. But any plans to install them no one could confirm.

It's a bit of a Lego-like structure as is much of the airport, but then to my eyes so is much of modern large building construction everywhere in the country and further afield in many places.

Old control tower

Does anyone know whether the old control tower will be demolished when the time comes to knock down the old terminal building?
I did hear someone say the old control tower is listed but can't confirm that.

If it is to be left will it impact adversely in any way on operations?

It will be demolished along with all the other buildings. Not a structure that those of who worked there have much love for - leaky, lined with asbestos and with a terrible view of the airfield.

Driving past the new admin building late this afternoon,noticed that most of the windows are now fitted indicating that construction is progressing steadily.Which is just as well because I received an e-mail from Bristol airport spotters website the other week to say that the proposed spotters days at the old terminal building later this year are no longer possible as the builing will be demolished in May.

Was there any indication if there was going to be a spotters day and where the venue would be,or that is work in progress.
