Major road closures on link road to Luton Airport this weekend

Diversions in place for motorists

There will be major road closures this weekend while one of the final stages of work between Luton Airport and the M1 is carried out.

Work on the East Luton Corridor project means the Vauxhall Way roundabout will be closed from 10pm on Friday, March 6, until 3am on Monday, March 9.

Also closed over the weekend will be Kimpton Road, the A505 Airport Way from Vauxhall Way to the Eaton Green roundabout, and the old Airport Way road leading to the Holiday Inn.

Diversion routes will be signposted and include:

Stopsley to the M1 via Crawley Green Road, Windmill Lane and Gipsy Lane.

Stopsley to the airport via Eaton Green Road, Frank Lester Way and Percival Way.

A spokesman for Luton Borough Council said: "The council would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, but the closures are essential to enable this resurfacing work to be undertaken."

Luton Airport to charge for dropping passengers at terminal

Luton Airport is to charge drivers for dropping passengers off at the terminal.

Motorists will have to pay £1, which will allow them to spend just 10 minutes in the refurbished drop off zone.

The "kiss and drop" levy will be enforced by barriers which will take payment as the driver leaves.

Although Birmingham Airport has a similar charge, it is enforced by directing motorists to a special section of the nearby short-stay car park.

Luton's charge is due to come into force later this month and comes within weeks of the same airport unveiling plans to allow passengers to jump the security queue for £3.

Luton also charges £1 to use luggage trolleys and the same amount for clear plastic bags needed to take liquids through security.

The airport also withdrew its contribution towards the courtesy bus which takes passengers to the airport from the nearest station.

Passengers who choose not to pay for the new drop off zone will have to be left at one of the airport's car parks, which is a two minute bus ride from the terminal itself.

"If you go to Luton and it is raining, the one thing you can guarantee is that passengers will get wet," said Paul Ruck, a local taxi driver, who was unimpressed by the plans.

"I think they have gone absolutely mad," said Paul Ruck, a taxi driver who ferries passengers to Luton.

"The owners of the airport have absolutely no idea how to run it. My customers will think twice if they want to pay extra for being let off at the set down area."

Luton's move could be followed by other airports who have, in recent years, been swift to levy additional levies on passengers.

Liverpool charges £3 for fast track access through security, while Manchester charges £1 for the plastic bags needed to carry liquids on board.

There was swift condemnation for the latest planned charges from consumer groups and airlines.

"These charges are already paid for in the air fares and that includes being dropped off," said James Fremantle, spokesman for the Air Transport Users Council.

Andrew McConnell, spokesman for easyJet, Luton's major operator, also condemned the move.

"Whatever next? We have seen charges for trolleys, fast track security and even the plastic bags. Now they want one pound for dropping somebody off.

"The danger is that people will choose other airports instead, rather than be forced to pay these escalating charges."

But the initiative was defended by Nic Hutton, Luton airport's general manager of projects and development.

"We have made this investment so that getting to the airport is easier and more convenient for all our passengers," he said.

"Dropping passengers off can be a stressful experience; we have therefore given careful consideration to providing the right facilities and enough time for people to unload in a secure environment.

"Making a small charge reminds drivers of the ten minute time allocation and keeps the traffic flowing.

"By offering a choice of options we can provide an airport experience to suit the needs of all our passengers."

There will eventually be a cut off point where people say enough is enough. The trouble is we wont be able to distinguish between the drop in passengers because of the credit crunch from the passengers who have simply had enough of paying through the nose to fly.

New Luton Airport link road opened

A 'challenging' road scheme, the biggest ever undertaken by Luton Borough Council, to link the M1 with Luton Airport was officially opened last Thursday. The £22 million East Luton Corridor saw the upgrading of the A1081 and A505 Airport Way to a dual carriageway, a new bus-only road from Luton Parkway station to the airport and a new dual carriageway between Airport Way and Percival Way.

The scheme encountered problems from the start, including the withdrawal of regional funding, meaning the council had to find the cash elsewhere. Technical problems encountered by contractors also meant that instead of taking 19 months to finish the road, it took more than 3 years.

On Thursday the road was opened by Lord Bill McKenzie of Luton, minister for the Department of Work and Pensions. The council says the project has kick-started the redevelopment of the old Vauxhall site, now known as Napier Park, which could eventually become home to up to 2000 homes, offices, shopping, warehouses, and a hotel / conference centre.

Luton Airport launch new ‘access plan’ (£1 drop off fee)

Luton airport launched its new 'access plan' today. The plan, which includes charging drivers £1 to use the drop off car park, will allow passengers to reach the terminal in the most 'secure and orderly' manner possible, a spokesman said.

The airport said that changes to the way passengers access the airport were being made to adapt to rising passenger numbers. The plan includes a new priority drop-off area, where airport visitors pay £1 for ten minutes to drop off passengers. Drivers not wanting to pay this can drop off passengers at the mid stay car park for free, but they will have to take the free transfer bus (which operates every 10 minutes) to the terminal.

Luton Airport's new public transport interchange will also launch today. This will see coach, bus and rail shuttle services stopping outside the terminal building and a dedicated bus lane opened.

Glyn Jones, managing director of Luton Airport, said: 'We remain committed to ensuring all passengers are able to access the terminal in a secure and orderly manner. By encouraging use of our mid-term car park, which is only a two-minute bus ride from the terminal, and the excellent public transport links to and from the airport we will be better able to manage traffic flows around the terminal.' He didn't mention the tens of thousands of pounds the new charge will also generate in income for the airport.

Today I picked up my nephew from Luton using the 1 hour free in the drop off area in the mid term car park. It has improved on the last couple of visits as they have marked out a special area for drop off and pick up which is near to entrance/exit which makes sense. last time I was miles away it took 10 minutes to walk to bus stop once i found it as it was not clearly marked. I used it on the the first day of operation and it was chaos all over. There was a big sign to show you where it was as you crossed the roundabout, but once in there there were really no instructions as you got your ticket at the barrier. The bus which is supposed to be every 10 minutes, well the first time it was 18 minutes before seeing a bus and today 16 and it was at a quiet period. so that needs a bit of work on it. One major improvement could be the installation of a arrivals/departure board in the bus stop. The last thing you want to happen is turn up and find out that there is a delay. You do not anything to incurr minutes to take you over the hour when charges kick in.

Passenger unhappy after car written off at Luton Airport car park

Airparks' Luton airport parking staff crashed holidaymaker's car into a lamp-post while he was abroad, writing the car off, then offered him compensation much lower than he considered fair, the Guardian reports. Darren Schuster handed over the keys to his beloved BMW at Airparks' parking depot near Luton Airport before he and his family jetted off for their two-week summer break.

However, when the property maintenance contractor got off the courtesy bus after arriving back in Britain, what met his eyes somewhat ‘ruined the holiday’. An Airparks member of staff had crashed the car into a lamp-post. The accident caused £5,000 worth of damage, which in effect wrote off his 1994 car.

A car transporter was summoned to take him, his family and the damaged car back to their Windsor home. The delays meant his partner lost half a day's pay. Back at home, he contacted Airparks, which arranged to supply a replacement rented car, but this was taken away after 19 days, without a settlement being reached. The company also refunded him his original car parking charge.

You might have thought that, having wrecked his pride and joy, Airparks would have bent over backwards to compensate him – but not a bit of it, he told the newspaper. More than a month later, still without a car, and faced having to take the company to the small claims court to get a reasonable payout, he contacted the Guardian.

The car was assessed for repairs, with one garage quoting a total of £7,500. A second suggested £4,674, not including any further damage discovered upon dismantling – far more than its replacement value. When Mr Schuster turned down Airparks' opening offer of £1000, he was sent a copy of an advert for a similar BMW advertised in Auto Trader. At this point, it was passed over to the company's insurer, which offered £600 (later upped to £850).

He told the newspaper: ‘Throughout this process, these people have been treating me as though they were doing me a favour. Given what happened, you'd think they would be trying to help get this resolved quickly and amicably. Instead I have just had these derisory offers.’

When Guardian Money contacted Airparks', the airport car park operator owned by Holiday Extras, the company agreed to pay Mr Schuster £1,200 for the car plus £200 to cover his expenses, to which he has agreed. The newspaper's research suggested the car alone was worth £1,400.

Mr Schuster added: ‘As part of the settlement, Airparks has offered me 15 days' free parking in the future. However, I don't think I'm going to take them up on that particular offer.’ In addition to Luton, Airparks runs sites at Birmingham, Cardiff and East Midlands airports.

Luton Airport expansion could ‘gridlock’ St Albans roads

FURTHER traffic gridlock on St Albans roads would ensue should Luton Airport get the go-ahead for a major expansion, a campaigner in Wheathampstead has cautioned.

Comments Email Print
Judy Shardlow, who lives in the village, criticised the airport’s scheme to double passenger numbers to 18 million a year, saying Luton’s planning application traffic impact assessment was “flawed”.

Campaigners throughout the district are urging residents to join the growing battle against Luton Airport’s bid, with the Herts Advertiser backing their fight to protect our skies by launching an online petition.

Judy said the airport’s scheme, open to consultation until February 18, “takes no account of, or responsibility for, the traffic impacts beyond the immediate vicinity of the airport”.

Currently about 80 per cent of the airport’s 9.5 million passengers travel to it by car, taxi or bus.

New rail franchise includes requirement for more night trains to serve Luton Airport

Britain’s biggest ever rail franchise will include a requirement for more trains to serve Luton Airport Parkway station.

The move has been welcomed by a spokesman for Luton Airport who said they had been lobbying behind an increase in rail services for some time.

Oliver Jaycock, ‎general manager, marketing, for London Luton Airport told a business meeting in Leighton Buzzard on Thursday that part of the reason so many people drive to the hub is the currently limited rail service from London.

He said he felt it would make a difference if there was a reliable and frequent service 24 hours a day.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
