easyJet slam Luton Airport drop off charge

easyJet has slammed Luton Airport's decision to charge drivers £1 for using the drop off zone. From April 29, passengers will be forced to pay the fee if they want to use the car park, which allows drivers 10 minutes to drop off passengers. But airport based budget airline easyJet said the new charges were ‘a recipe for traffic chaos’.

Spokesman Andrew McConnell, said: ‘What next? We already have charges for fast track security and plastic bags. Now they want a pound for dropping somebody off at the Airport. This new scheme is a recipe for traffic chaos, which will see people stopping on double yellow lines or parking in the bus lane.'

‘Passengers already pay to use the airport facilities as part of their air fare. The danger here is that people will choose other airports instead, rather than be forced to pay these charges.’

New easyJet routes from Luton & a Starbucks deal

easyJet has launched three new routes from London Luton Airport. easyJet has also announced that it will serve Starbucks coffee on board its flights.

The new easyJet routes from Luton will start in July and bring the total number of destinations served by the airline from the airport to 34. The three new easyJet destinations available to travellers departing from Luton are Milan (five weekly), Mahon, in Menorca (three weekly) and Montpellier (three weekly). The routes will begin on July 6, except for Montpellier, which will start on July 7.

Meanwhile, easyJet today announced a deal with Starbucks. Under the tie-up, Starbucks coffee and its other hot drinks will be sold to passengers during their flights from Newcastle, London Stansted, Gatwick and Madrid. Starbucks coffee has been available on flights with United Airlines for over 10 years, but the easyJet collaboration is the first time that the coffee has been served on any other carrier, according to the Travel Trade Gazette.

easyJet is understood to feel that the deal with Starbucks will demonstrate to customers how the carrier's service differs from that of its rivals. Although the details have not yet been announced, it is thought that the coffee would come in sachets rather than being brewed onboard the flight. It would also cost slightly less than in Starbucks outlets on firm ground.

easyJet and Starbucks

Nothing new in the UK low cost aviation scene.

When she started Go Barbara Cassani wanted her airline to be a touch classier than the rival lo-cos and in my experience it was.

One of the things she did was to sell proper ground coffee on board which the cabin crew brewed up in the galleys.

Having bought Go, easyJet have taken a long time to go back to this sort of thing. Another of her initiatives, different to other UK/Irish lo-cos at the time, was have seats assigned at check-in. I wish easyJet would bring that back.

Incidentally, Barbara Cassani was on one of the tv Budget programmes today being asked her opinion on it.

With Jet2 you can pick your seat during the online booking stages.

Starbucks is a popular brand in it's own right and it's sure to be a success.

I think that your seats are pre-allocated on Flybe as well.

The point I was making was that Go used to pre-allocate seats in the days when most if not all low-cost airlines operating into and out of the UK did not, certainly not Ryanair and easyJet, although Debonair may have done so but I can't be sure - this was before Jet2 started operations and when Flybe was still Jersey European or it may have been in its British European guise by then, either way not a low-cost airline.

If Jet2 can pre-allocate and be as successful as it undoubtedly is, why can't the others?

easyJet, for example, operates its Speedy Boarder scheme which, in theory if not always in practice, gets you to the aircraft steps amongst the first to board. Why not just turn that into a specific seat because I'm sure they would want to add a premium if they began pre-allocating seats?

The main argument against seems to be that it would encourage passengers to dawdle in airport shops or bars instead of rushing to the aircraft to get a decent seat. Presumably Jet2 encounters no problems in this regard.

I think it may depend on the turn around times, for instance, Ryanair usually have around 20 minutes where as Jet2 have at least 30 minutes normally. I think that this probably makes quite a big difference when trying to board a flight. Perhaps somebody could confirm this (if we have a dispatcher on the site?) Which I think we do, somewhere !

[textarea]easyJet in dispute with Luton Airport

Negotiations between easyJet and Luton Airport over landing fees for next year have reached an impasse that could threaten the size of the airline’s presence at its base, TTG reports. easyJet, which is the largest airline at Luton, is reported to be refusing to pay higher landing charges proposed by the airport and debating whether to move aircraft to Stansted and Gatwick instead. It already flies more passengers from Gatwick than from Luton, after its acquisition of GB Airways.

The airline started at Luton and still regards it as its ‘spiritual home’, but has been at odds with the airport over several issues, including a £1 drop-off charge at its short term car park introduced this year, as well as the proposed increase in landing fees.

TTG quotes 'sources close to the negotiations' saying that airport charges already make up about 10% of the average easyJet fare from Luton. The proposed increase would force it to raise ticket prices for passengers. It is suggested that, if easyJet does not get the deal it wants, it will drop plans to expand at Luton and move two of its eight aircraft based there to other airports.

How ironic - Ryanair is moving aircraft from Stansted (or so it says) because of the charges it pays there.

Surely easyJet has more than eight aircraft based at Luton.

Does sound odd. I'm sure LTN has far more than eight EZY aircraft based there too.

[textarea]easyJet seek council’s help in Luton Airport fees row

easyJet has called on Luton council to put pressure on Luton Airport operator Albertis to help make the airport, which the council owns and leases to the Spanish company, more competitive. The budget airline's chief executive, Andy Harrison, has written to Luton Borough Council urging the authority to help reduce the airport's costs.

Details of the letter were released as 100 easyJet cabin crew marched and protested in Luton yesterday over planned cuts at the town's airport. They released 565 balloons, one for each job they say is at risk, and presented a letter to the head of the Council. However, a spokesman for the council said it had no power to intervene in negotiations between easyJet and the airport operator.

I don't believe that the management of Luton airport haven't done everything that they can to reduce costs. Airlines are getting silly with their demands to airports these days.

[textarea]easyJet to add Belfast City – Luton flights

Additional flights between Belfast City Airport and Luton will be introduced by easyJet this autumn following the success of the route. The budget airline will increase its number of daily flights between the two airports from two to three on October 31, when it starts its winter schedule.

The flights to Belfast City began in January, a change from easyJet's more normal Belfast International base. However, Trevor Spinks, easyJet's Northern Ireland marketing manager, said the airline is ‘delighted’ with the support it has had from its customers.

He said: ‘With two daily flights we estimated that we would have 180,000 passengers a year on the route. Now with three flights, we believe that the figure will rise to 270,000.' The weekday flights will take off from Luton at 07:00, 15:00 and 18:00.

[textarea]easyJet celebrates 65 million passengers at Luton Airport

Lorraine Chase paid a flying visit to Luton Airport yesterday to help celebrate easyJet’s 65 millionth traveller from the airport – and the launch a new route to the Greek island of Corfu.

The actress, whose 1970s Campari TV advert helped put the Bedfordshire airport on the map, checked in the budget airline’s first passenger in 1995, who was heading from Luton to Glasgow. And she was back yesterday to mark the milestone.

An easyJet spokesman said: ‘We couldn’t think of anyone more appropriate to celebrate this milestone and the new Corfu route launch with than Lorraine. We’re really pleased she was able to join us again at Luton Airport.’

I can't imagine Luton would be any where near as busy had Easyjet not set up at the airport all those years ago.

[textarea]easyJet announce Luton – Iceland flights

easyJet is to launch flights to Iceland from Luton airport for the first time next year. The service to Iceland's capital Reykjavik will take off on 27 March.

Tickets for the new route, which will run three times a week, go on sale today. The budget airline expects the route to attract business customers as well as tourists on 'culture-rich city breaks or adventurous travellers looking for unrivalled scenery and activities.’

An intending passenger on an easyJet flight at Luton that was being refuelled decided it would be a good thing to light up and have a final drag on his cigarette before climbing the stairs to board. Quick-thinking staff grabbed the cigarrette and stubbed it out.

The captain refused to let him fly and he was returned to the terminal. Well done, captain.

Some people if they had brains they would be dangerous. Well done captain, and hope the passenger gets taken to court for it.

Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
