It's a common question at most airports. "Is there a smoking area airside?" Here in the UK it is illegal to smoke in any indoor public area which includes all airport terminal buildings. Similar laws in Europe also prohibit smoking inside airport terminal buildings. Over the last couple of years many airports in the UK have taken steps to allow passengers to smoke in dedicated airside smoking shelters.

If you know an airport that offers customers smoking areas please let us know here.

The airport listed here are airports our members say have airside smoking areas:

  • Abu Dhabi
  • Aracife
  • Aberdeen
  • Amsterdam
  • Bristol
  • Birmingham
  • Banjul
  • Cyprus - Paphos
  • Doncaster Sheffield
  • Dublin
  • Dubai
  • Dusseldorf
  • East Midlands
  • Leeds Bradford
  • Madeira
  • Manchester
  • Manila
  • Menorca
  • Munich
  • Thira
  • Zurich - Kloten
  • Leeds Bradford

Bristol Airport (BRS/EGGD) has an outdoor area airside for smokers.

I'm not a smoker but I believe it's been there for a few years.

I personally haven't come across any in the UK, but many German Airports have smokers booths, which to me as a non-smoker look horrible! Last time I was at Schipol (couple of years ago) there was a bar with a smoking area, and a bit off the beaten track but I also remember Banjul in The Gambia having an airside outdoor area in which people were smoking.

Last time I went through MAN they had smoking "cages" in T1 and 2. Don't know about T3 though. Even though I'm a smoker they are quite disgusting and I would think twice about using them.

Dusseldorf
Munich
Manchester
East Midlands
Zurich Kloten
Thira - Rooftop
Amsterdam Schiphol

Cheers Chris, I'll add them to the list. PS. If Jet2 ruled the world every airport would have a smoking area!

I believe Dublin T1 (?) does outside one of the bars, however when I flew from there it was closed as the bar was also closed.

Except for Manchester and Dublin I havent noticed one in any other airport UK or abroad that I've been through.

When HUY actually flew to where I wanted to go, we used to stay in the landside bar until just before boarding.

Two more for the list.

Madeira - rooftop overlooking the runway. Good viewing area.
Menorca - extreme left hand end of the terminal when looking out to the runway.

Thanks airforced I've added them to the list. Can anybody confirm Dublin?

Aberdeen airport has just opened a new smoking area in it's departure lounge. At a cost of £1 it seems reasonable but I guess a chain smoker would disagree.

Hi All

Doncaster has a nice "cage" F.O.C to smoke in.

Malta has a lovely outside sitting area just next to the bar.

Sharm has 2 area's both inside, the not so nice one is as you enter the departure lounge. But if you go to the very end of the lounge there is another nice bar and smoking area. (See you there next week! :)

Thanks for the info Balmain22 and sorry for the delay in accepting your moderation queue post. Have you thought of registering with us?

Singapore's Changi Airport has a lovely smoking area on an outside terrace cactus garden at T1

Just been through Girona and there are now 2 outside areas where you can smoke. There is the old cafe area just after you have passed through the Duty Free (no cafe now) but that has been replaced by a McDonalds/Subway cafe with a large outside area at the far right hand end of departures after passing though Duty Free.

Heathrow Terminal 4 has one also which is the opposite end fromt he viewing gallery.
Dubia also has but seperate from the bar.
Abu Dhabi has also and you can take your pint in there :)
AMS, Thaipei and Manila as well.
In Manila only T3 and T2 (internationals only) have smoking areas. However T1 is no smoking but if you display cigarettes in the toilet the attendants usually approach you and ask if you want to smoke. The expect a tip of around 70p for the privelage

I can confirm Dublin T1 upstairs next to Burger King there is a pub with a nice terrace (wrap up though)
Also T4 Heathrow has a sneaky little smokers downstairs at the opposite end from the viewing gallery.
Abu Dhabi, Dubai both have.
Manila T2 but only the international bit.
Manila T3 has one called the "tinderbox"
Manila T1 is under renovation and is now completely non smoking along with non efficiency and non service....oh and also no facilities either LOL

Bristol Airport has a smoking area (outside) airside.

Currently an extension to the terminal building is being built - due for completion next summer - which will include an outdoor viewing and eating/drinking area airside on the first floor. A fly-through video shows this 'verandah' replete with numerous tables and chairs with umbrella-type covers. The entrance door to this area is clearly shown as a smoking area on the video.

Given that from the video it is apparently intended as effectively an outdoor refreshment area it's very surprising that smoking would be allowed, especially in the current climate.

I had a response from the airport a while ago saying that parts of the new verandah would be available for smoking.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
