Flyglobespan axes Palma and Malaga routes

A LOW-COST airline has cancelled flights from Aberdeen Airport to two popular holiday hotspots.

Flyglobespan has axed nine flights scheduled to take off in March and April to Palma and Malaga.

The latest cancellations come only months after a number of routes were cancelled.

Four flights have now been cancelled to Palma in March.

And five flights, due to take off for Malaga on Wednesdays in April, have also been ditched.

But the airline has kept Saturday Malaga flights on its schedule.

Flyglobespan spokesman Crawford Brankin said the flight cancellations were due to lack of demand. He said they had offered passengers alternative dates but refused to say how many passengers were affected by the move.

Mr Brankin added: “We cancelled because passenger numbers for the fights were minimal. We would like to put the service back on if demand was to improve.

“These are early season schedule changes and do not affect our main summer programme.

“Any passengers affected by these changes will be offered full refunds or alternative flights.”

[textarea]Flyglobespan axe Aberdeen – Malaga flights

Flyglobespan has axed its winter Aberdeen to Malaga service, which was due to launch in three months. The holiday airline said poor sales and the tough economic climate meant the flights had to be cancelled.

Passengers who have already booked flights will now be asked to fly to Malaga from Glasgow or Edinburgh. They have been offered free car parking for the inconvenience of flying from other airports.

A spokesman for Flyglobespan confirmed it will not operate the planned services between Aberdeen Airport and Malaga from November 7 to April 24 next year. He said: ‘We must always listen to and be guided by the market, which has led to an expanded service in peak times, but also a reduction in the winter schedule. We must acknowledge the demand is not there and plan accordingly.’

That's a shame because it will be a bit of a pig to have to drive from Aberdeen to Edinburgh to catch a flight to Malaga. I'm sure this was expected though as the catchment area for Aberdeen is on the shallow side.

Must be difficult, probably impossible, to drag in passengers from neighbouring catchments as is possible at many regional airports.

An extra flight to Dubrovnik has to be seen as a good sign after the last twelve months of cutbacks by the airline at Aberdeen.

The collapse of Scotland's own low cost airline will mean the loss of eight routes from Aberdeen.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
