Personally to me, bases mean very little and the Ryanair article above demonstrates why...

Ryanair started off with 2x based aircraft and this rose to 4x based aircraft the following year in 2009. in the following 10 years, the bases has barely changed with an occasional 5th based aircraft coming seasonally in the summers.

However, Ryanair are due to be our 3rd largest airline in S2020. Based on the S2020 peak week as follows:

1. Jet2: 412x Weekly ATMs / 14 Based A/C = 29.4 flights per week per A/C
2. TUI: 290x Weekly ATMs / 10 Based A/C = 29.0 flights per week per A/C

Using the above....

3. Ryanair: 302x Weekly ATMs equates to an equivalent of over 10x based A/C although we know they only base 4 at BHX

and

7. Easyjet: 92x Weekly ATMs equates to an equivalent of over 3x based A/C although we know they don't have a base at BHX

Obviously bases at an airport demonstrate a commitment to that airport with regard to jobs and finance, but the LCC model doesn't always require it to work. Ryanair prove this, although I think we'd all love to see some growth from Ryanair who's growth at BHX has been pretty stagnant over the last 6-7 years.

As for Easyjet, who knows. However, their growth in the space of one year at BHX has been pretty epic.

2019: 40x weekly ATMs (6,600x weekly seats)
2020: 92x weekly ATMs (15,450x weekly seats) +134% Growth

This will mean in S2020, Easyjet will offer more weekly seats than Air France, Brussels Airlines and Turkish Airlines COMBINED and will be the 7th biggest airline at BHX!

Interesting stats.

The figures above definitely demonstrate that a base is not the 'be and and end all' of everything but to me there is a downside, that is you are kind of at the mercy of events that may happen down route. Wizz to Sofia, Blue Air to both Cluj and Larnaca and Air Arabia to Agadir are some of the recent examples of routes/airlines that have been lost due to base closures or downgrades elsewhere.

A based aircraft can be deployed elsewhere to fill the gap, an away based aircraft can mean the route gone for good.

Swings and roundabouts I guess.

I think I have mentioned before, a benefit of a base with respect to city flights is that you can be at work earlier and catch a later flight back home.

dont quite see what all the fuss is about? Aircraft had to divert, and once landing at BHX the crew will make the decision, either to refuel and try again, or if crew hours dictate, end the flight and passengers continue by road. Passengers cant be contacted on an aircraft unless they have a mobile phone, and at least they are all safe. Bit of a non story to me! typical Birmingham Mail!!

Sloppy journalism. The article says 'passengers' and only quote one person who wasn't even a passenger! What it should have said is 'Bristol woman shows her anger on Twitter after brother's plane diverted. By all accounts the lack of other tweets from the 120+ passengers suggests that they were happy that the plane landed safely.'

I don't get why people tweet. Just turn on the phone function and call easyJet.

presume a Naples based aircraft?

Great to finally see it on sale :)

Three new routes from easyjet in one year, something that would have been unthinkable not too long ago. Lets hope that whatever has held back the others can be sorted and they can really push on from here.

Some cracking intro fares for anyone interested (y)

Sorry yes Naples as expected
Which is interesting as even Manchester hasn’t got Naples on easyJet !
So why BHX ?
Hopefully a good sign of more destinations to follow at some point?

Because Naples is served from Liverpool for easy. There are some routes easy are willing to overlap from LPL/MAN, but some they are not.

So, what I now assume if the final Summer'20 Schedule from easyJet @BHX...

A total of 48x Departures/96x ATM's in the Summer peak week (although this schedule is pretty consistent all Summer) to 5x destinations. Ok, this is far from a base like operation but goes someway to change peoples perception that easyJet aren't interested in BHX.

In terms of weekly seat capacity in 2020 @BHX

5. Emirates = 17,200x weekly seats
6. EasyJet = 16,100x weekly seats
7. Lufthansa = 15,600x weekly seats

In terms of No. of weekly ATM's in 2020 @BHX

5. Aer Lingus = 98x weekly ATM's
6. EasyJet = 96x weekly ATM's
7. Lufthansa = 94x weekly ATM's

In terms of growth in 2020 @BHX

2. Tui = +60x weekly ATM's
3. EasyJet = +56x weekly ATM's

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

If you’re tired of takeoffs, you’re tired of life.
49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
